The jobs that "no one wants" don't require specific skill sets. It's about people swallowing their pride and taking jobs they feel are beneath them, which is ironic, because they obviously don't feel living off the government is beneath them.

Both. I would not be able to afford to pay my bills solely off the salary of one of those jobs, but coupled with what I've saved up from working over the years, and having my school paid for greatly contributed to that, I'd be fine for a decent period of time.

First of all, I'm lucky enough to be in a position that I wouldn't have to take just any job right away if I were to lose mine.

 

If I were in a position where that was necessary, there are all kinds of jobs available. From retail at places like Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc., to the food industry such as a manager at a fast-food restaurant or servers at places like Brio, Buckhead, etc. Great, career orientated jobs? Hardly, but a source of income, and a job.

 

YOU could get some of those jobs based on YOU and where you live. However, not all areas are like NKY where there are lots of retail and restaurants. Secondly, those jobs still have certain requirements even if its not based on education. Brio's is not hiring just anyone . They want a certain look. They want a certain communication skill. They probably are looking for a certain age. If a 20-yr-old attractive female is looking for a job and a 48-yr-old blue collar guy who drove a truck or worked the line is looking for that job or a 55 yr old former middle manager is looking for that job then the attractive YOUNG girl is getting the job. She fits the profile of who they like to hire.

 

How many Best Buys are there in EKY? Are there Brio's in Wolfe County?

 

Your situation and my situation can not be applied to every person's situation. Don't fall into the trap that many do by generalizing that these problems are easy to resolve and that most unemployed are lazy or "spoiled" as one candidate said recently.

Well, for one it would make my expenses more, but I'd still most likely be able to live without UE, granted for a shorter period of time.

I wonder what the unemployed did before there was the handout like there is now from the government, or is this the first time we have had the problem in our country?????? C'mon.

I don't know that I've ever seen a school system that didn't have a custodial or bus driver job posted.

With my education I wouldn't like having to do jobs like these, but I can guarantee you that I would before taking unemployment. I have more pride in being self-sufficient than I have in the status level of my current job.

There are 6 applicants for every job right now. I had a teaching aid position last year at my school and you would not believe the number of applicants I had. All of those people were actively looking for a job and only 1 of them got one. The economy is so bad that people are doing their own lawn, or they are paying "lawn businesses" to do the mowing. There is not a yard in my neighborhood that my son could mow at this point.

 

You guys just havent had to look.

 

I am about to wire (as soon as I finish this post) some money to my sister in WVA. Her husband is trying to get "in" the mines, but the only thing open is security at the mines making 7.25 an hour - and he is doing. She gets food stamps that equal 190.00 per month. She has applied at every fast food restaurant, full service restaurant and drug store around. Nobody is hiring. They cannot live on food stamps AND 7.25 an hour, so I don't want to hear all this silly stuff about welfare queens and lazy people. THE JOBS ARE NOT THERE and people are suffering. When that occurs, in this country, there should be a safety net. They have only one car and there is not public transportation to get her to the next community to try to get a job there because it is bigger. How do they move? Does he give up a job that he has for the 'possibility' of both of them finding one somewhere else? NO - in this economy you cannot give up a job.

Ace-I am not downing the plight of your sister and family, but why are they staying in West Virginia? Another poster said this earlier in this thread. In the old days if work wasn't available you moved the family to someplace for the hope of a job and money. Sometimes entire families perished during the attempt. That is what is lacking now-some folks won't move to another state, and if they won't do that, then they have to hope and pray for the best. What about joining the military? One must be proactive. I know this sounds uncaring, but somebody has to say it-you have to fend for yourself.

Maybe I am misunderstanding your point there, but if your son waits until July to get a job cutting grass-then he has waited to long. Februaury would be a good month to solicit those jobs. Our safety net has grown too large and too wide in this country.

I didn't say all, but there are jobs available in different parts of the country. Of course it is a different world in some ways, but not in the fundamentals. If your family's plight is so bad in West Virgina, then I would urge them to get out. You can interpret it however you want. I am trying to give them other options. What they are doing now isn't working.

I have quite a large group of people working under me. And i have to agree with Hist. We pay a pretty nice wage, and I can't tell you how many just quit because it's a tough job. They just quit, with no prospects. It's unbelievable.

I don't think you are downing the family, but at 35 military is not much of an option. They moved from the Golden Triangle in Kentucky because the word was drying up, and there is some family in WVA, but they are doing just as poorly as my sis.

 

The simple fact is is that the job market is not what some on here are making it out to be. There are people with good work ethic who cannot find jobs even with diligent effort.

 

As to the lawns, my son is 12 and mows some on our yard (not turning him lose yet with the mower), but that was not my point. My point is I live in a fairly nice neighborhood and people don't hire the teenager down the road anymore. The either do the lawn themselves or they hire lawn services who do the edging and trimming, etc. Again this ain't 1955 or even 1975. The economy of scale says that the lawn services can do the yards faster and cheaper than my son and the service employs men and women who need the job.

 

Back to moving - at least my sister owns her trailor - so up and moving again guys is not so easy and perish doing so . . . what is that all about.
