AZ Gov: Illegals Are Smugglers

Is there any data to dispute the claim?

It would be hard either way. Obviously there are plenty of illegals coming into Arizona (and the US). The only ones that are caught are likely the only ones who do something wrong (i.e., arrested for a crime, then found to be illegal). So the stats undoubtedly say that 100% of illegals caught are criminals, although we all know that, while the smuggling rate might be high, that isn't entirely true.

I love it. One member wants to see data supporting the claim. Another wants to see data disputing the claim.

Is this a great - polarized, but still great - country or what?

Hey, they're both fair questions. :p
I would be interested in seeing any data that she has to back up the claim.
I tried to make out all the text on the sign posted in the video on RTS's other thread about signs not being enough.

DANGER-PUBLIC WARNING

Visitors May Encounter Armed Criminals and Smuggling Vehicles Traveling at High Rates of Speed

Stay Away From Trash, Clothing, Backpacks and Abandoned Vehicles

If You See Suspicious Activity, Do Not Confront! Move Away and Call 911

At least 15 such signs have been posted by the Bureau of Land Management in Arizona. The one in RTS's video is 120 miles by road and 80 miles as the crow flies north of the US/Mexico border. Really?

An agency of our federal government posts signs warning legal US Citizens to stay out of public US lands because of armed criminals from Mexico. Seriously?

From the National Park Service website about closure of the western portion of Organ Pipe National Monument (which has been closed for years):

Due to our proximity to the International Boundary with Mexico, some areas near the border are closed for construction and visitor safety concerns.

From the National Park Service website about the Kris Eggle Visitor Center ar Organ Pipe National Monument (along Arizona's Southern Border):

Kris Eggle (a National Park Ranger) was shot and killed in the line of duty at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, on August 9, 2002 while pursuing members of a drug cartel hit squad who fled into the United States after committing a string of murders in Mexico.

He was 28 years old.

I don't know what specific data Governor Brewer has to back up her claims... and I won't attempt to defend her claim that most illegals are smuggling drugs into the country, but to state that her comments are "...generalizations that have zero substance, proof, or accuracy" seems a bit of a reach too.

By posting the signs and closing large swaths of our National Parks and posting information on a NPS website about crime and smuggling associated with illegal immigration... it is pretty clear our Federal Government is aware there is a problem.

Why is our government not doing the job of protecting our borders?

Surely you did not intend to quote me, as you did not answer my question, nor is the bolded attributed to me.

?

You either have the facts to back it up (she doesn't) or its a reach. It can't be in between.

I was watching Gangland on the History Channel the other day and they were talking about the ABT (Aryan Brotherhood of Texas). There were former gang members on their talking about all the money they made off of trafficking drugs and smuggling it in from Mexico. So a bunch of white guys, who look like normal Americans (minus some of the tattoos lol).

I know this might be a little off topic, but I thought it was worth pointing out that there are plenty of White Americans in that region of the country smuggling drugs, and selling the smuggled drugs too.

Surely you did not intend to quote me, as you did not answer my question, nor is the bolded attributed to me.
Actually, I did... but please don't call me "Shirley"...

(I know, I know... it works better spoken than written... but I just had to...)

I quoted you because you said, "I would be interested in seeing any data that she has to back up the claim." Clyde opened the thread with, "When will we learn not to make generalizations that have zero substance, proof, or accuracy?"

I made clear that I am in no way backing her claim of "most illegal immigrants smuggle drugs" but I think it's pretty clear from the evidence I provided, there is valid proof that a measurable percentage do.

You asked for "any data"... Clyde infered the need for something beyond "zero substance, proof, or accuracy." I merely offered "some" valid data/proof/evidence that the governor isn't totally spinning out of orbit. :thumb:

Its irresponsible for the Gov to make such a comment even if its hyperbole.

Just like I learned in Logic 101, just because a)drug smugglers are criminals b)US arrested Latinos crossing the border with drugs then saying c)all Latinos crossing the border are drug smugglers is not true.

I can see where someone without much thought might post such a claim on a board but its beyond my ability to rationalize to think that the Governor of a state would utter such nonsense.
