Aric Russell is new Campbell County Coach

Featured Replies

Coach Russell will be a great hire for the program. He is coming from a very tough program to coach in so I think he is prepared for anything. Campbell County is a school that should be way more successful than it is. I dont think they have been to a regional tournament since Coach Sullivan was pushed out. I am happy to see excitement back at Campbell, its been missing for 8 years now. The thing you have to watch out for at Campbell County, if you win a regional championship, 2 years later you might be looking for another job.

You are correct. Lost to Scott by a point in the district final, then lost to a young but decent Clark County team by a bucket in the first round of the regional tourney.

Ok let me rephrase it, they have not won a District Championship in how long? I forgot they went in 2008. Either way, thats not exactly what you call success.

suc·cess   /səkˈsɛs/ –noun

1. the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors.

2. the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.

3. a successful performance or achievement: The play was an instant success.

4. a person or thing that is successful: She was a great success on the talk show.

5. Obsolete . outcome.

Kash,

How do you define success relative to a high school boys basketball program?

Maybelle and I discussed this at dinner.

1. The Favorable attemot at success well they were 49-32 the last three eyars

2. The attainment of honors well they didnt do that

3. Instand Success well Scott Code was 49-32

4. A person that was successful yes Scott was as much as one can be there

5. Outcome... well if the new coach has a great player move in from Cincinnati you might have a bit.

Talking to people here in maysville better do something this year because Brossart and Scott will be rockin and rolling with the young boys they have in th wings it might get ugly on da court

All I am saying is that Campbell County should be better. I measure success by championships. Which when is the last time Campbell has won any? 2001 or 2002? About 8 years ago? Thats a huge school, they should be competetive every year. Dan Sullivan had that program in the right direction and they forced him out. Reitz is a good coach, not sure why he left. Code knows the game of basketball, but his players hated him. If you dont have the respect of your players then you cant even think about success. River Dog, you keep talking about Demarco, thats the dumbest thing ever. Any coach will tell you, you cant win without good players, thats like saying Phil Jackson is not a good coach because he had MJ, Kobe, Shaq and Scottie Pippen. Come on now. I am just excited to see Campbell have some excitment about the program again. Will be nice to see some points on the board this year because they were a boring team to watch the last couple of years.

Go to Riherds http://www.khsaa.org and look up each of Newports records the last years he was there and its .500 until Demarko came.

Because Brossart graduated their top 8 in 2007?? :D

I'm not sure what this has to do with anything. Campbell County didn't play Brossart in the 2008 postseason.

As near as I can tell, every school graduates kids every year. Simon Kenton won a state title once, but failed to win the district the following year, I'm guessing the whole graduation thing might have had something to do with that. It happens everywhere, people move on.

Wow--Sensitive aren't we?? Just saying that was a total rebuilding year for BB, as they graduated their top 8 and were led into battle by an untested soph in '08; and CC moved into the 2 slot, for a brief period of "success"?? For the record, not many "A" size schools graduate 8 seniors, who all contribute; but I agree people do move on everywhere??

Best wishes to Coach Russell, and really the formula for success for most Camel fans seems rather simple--Score points!! Score 75 a game, go 10-15 like the "Dream Team" and the faithful seem content. Average 55 a game and go 19-12 and you're toast!!

I agree with most of what you say except for the bolded. Most of the players did not hate Code. The ones that did not play for him. In fact, if you talk to a lot of the returning players, they loved Code. These same players will also work their butts off for Coach Russell.

The Camel incoming freshman are very strong (and been very successful in AAU with the Wolfpack). They also have one of the best sophs in the state. Not exactly a bare cupboard.

See, I am hearing different from not only players but parents as well. I do not know everything that happend and the truth to any of it so I will not comment on that. Either way, Campbell is moving in another direction and it seems like its a good one. And I have no doubt the kids will work there butt off for Coach Russell.

Also, going .500 at a school like Newport is not that bad. You have players quitting on you and coming back a week later and you have to take them back or you wont have a team. Its a tough place to coach and I think Coach Russell did a great job with what he had. He only had 1 player really that had any talent and he had a great season. Im not saying Campbell has a ton of talent or will be the best team in the district, but he has more to choose from then he did at Newport.

It's seldom popular when a coach tries to bring discipline to an undisciplined program (ask any kid coming out of boot camp) as Coach Code did, but it works!! Parents, like players come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and temperments. If there's a prevalent attitude among them (parents) in HS sports, its that they frequently think their kid is better than he/she is; especially in their early years in a program, as they were often among the best on their teams coming through grade/middle school. When reality sets in, it can be tough to deal with parentally; and often becomes "the Coach's fault"!!

Regarding Newport, while I agree it can sometimes be more challenging coaching an inner city school; Newport is seldom devoid of talent. Last year's group of seniors had some very talented players, that had formed the heart of their varsity team since they were freshmen, and had been pointing to last year all along. DeMarko was a huge and welcome edition, but don't think there wasn't some talent already at Newport. It's still there, the challenge is getting kids out for the team, and keeping them interested; and if AFI is right about three new seniors coming out this year, then maybe the same could be said about Campbell??

So if success is measured by Championships, all but 1 team every year is unsuccessful. That's hard! I agree that you play to win the game, however, success by any program has to be measured against what talent is available.

I'm having a feeling that the "True Shepherd" has been reincarnated. Just a feeling????
