May 4, 201016 yr Author Ms. Bondi may have been before your time. Ms. Bondi was famous for her supporting roles: She was most well known for her roles as Jimmy Stewart's Mother in "It's a Wonderful Life" and for portraying Martha Corrin Walton in two episodes of the Waltons.
May 4, 201016 yr Best: Johny Depp, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robert DeNiro and Denzil Washington Underapreciated: Ed Norton and Philip Seymour Hoffman
May 4, 201016 yr I think a lot of the "greatest" actors mentioned thus far are kind one trick ponies, or at least type-cast. I'd define a great actor by their ability do portray diverse characters. Several of the folks I've seen mentioned seem to only do type-A, dramatic leads. I'd knock out at least Richard Burton, Yul Brynner, Katherine Hepburn, Bogart, Brando, and Morgan Freeman on that basis - maybe a few more. I'd say Hanks is one of the more diverse folks around. He's done a solid job of voice acting, comedy, drama, tragedy...I just don't think I'd personally stick him in as greatest though. He's gotten great characters written in great movies. I can't think of many roles that he has done up like crazy when he didn't necessarily have a big movie or amazing script surrounding his character to make him look fantastic. Greatest: Gene Hackman & Dustin Hoffman Most Under-Appreciated: Willem Dafoe & Guy Pierce
May 4, 201016 yr Best: Johny Depp, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robert DeNiro and Denzel Washington Unappreciated: Ed Norton and Philip Seymour Hoffman I think maybe 4 or 5 years ago I would have agreed with you that Ed Norton & Philip Seymour Hoffman were under-appreciated, but I'd say that any more, they're getting there due.
May 5, 201016 yr Two of the most underappreciated actors in my lifetime are Gene Hackman and Delroy Lindo Gene Hackman has won two Academy Award Oscars, one for Best Actor in The French Connection and the other for Best Supporting Actor in Unforgiving. I'm pretty sure he has been nominated for other roles as well. That's about as appreciated as an actor can be IMO.

I understand that, but some of his best performances have been in movies that didn't get a lot of attention. David Mamet's Heist comes to mind. Much like Johnny Depp's performance in Benny and Joon.
May 5, 201016 yr Delroy Lindo played the detective in Gone in 60 Seconds and was good in Heist (with Gene Hackman) and Romeo Must Die Well, that would explain some as I have never seen any of the 3 movies.
May 5, 201016 yr 1. Morgan Freeman & Robert DeNiro 2. Ed Harris & Diane Lane Morgan Freeman and Diane Lane are two GREAT choices.
May 5, 201016 yr Gene Hackman has won some awards maybe but can still be underappreciated. He was the first one to come to mind for me....awards aside, he has never been mentioned as a top "A" lister or lead role type actor. He is always great in character, big or small....think "Ghosts of Mississippi", "The Firm", even the quirkie comedy w/ Robin Williams& Nathan Lane (title escapes me?) Diane Lane is another good choice......beautiful, classy, versatile actress, nuff said!

In my opinion, I'd say Hackman's best comedic role was far and away his title character in "The Royal Tenenbaums".
