By the end of the season, you find teams that can't hold an 11 on 11 practice/scrimmage due to lack of players. Several kids are not playing because they don't have transportation to get them to a team they were drafted to that's clear across town so school based youth teams might be a better idea. The idea of forming more teams is a good one, but the financials for that is another story.

Kinda sounds like you're against this idea. I do agree that they may be rushing into it to try and start the 2010 season, but it is by far the more logical way to build successful high school programs.

 

MOI most 7th graders are not mentally or quite physically ready enough to play freshman ball, and I don't see how that would build their confidence having to constantly go against kids that are mentally/physically more mature.

From what I have seen in the BCPWFL there are more different offensive sets than in college. You have a bunch of television ideas and not high school based sets thrown at these kids and it changes every two years as they are drafted to a different system. Then when they get to high school, they have to throw all of that out of the window to follow a strict guideline set by their district school. As a high school coach, I would much rather have kids coming in somewhat knowing my offensive and defensive sets.

Also, if a middle school school team is blessed enough to have 3 superior talented skilled players at one position, then they are as I said "blessed". The coachable thing to do is to take the top two and move that third player to a position that would help the team.

The feeder system is not about who gets to play the most, but more importantly who's developing to be the best player at a position once they get into high school.

 

Here's one to think on;

QB Johnny plays BCPWFL for 6 years 3 different teams. On each of those teams the game plan was dive, option, and sweep. On emergencies they threw a hail mary trick pass. QB Johnny would be perfect for Boone, but he lives in the Conner district. QB Johnny can't complete a pass beyond 15 yards because he never worked on timing routes, drop steps, footwork or any of the tangibles to be a Conner high school QB. So now in his freshman year at Conner, QB Johnny has to look for another position to learn within a year or two just to get on the field for high school ball.

 

I wish they would align the Senior teams by high schools.

No, I don't think 6th graders should be playing with 7th and 8th graders. The new Ryle league should follow the age class that BCPWFL uses, but for some reason, they're pulling junior division kids in to play with the kids that would be in the senior division. so that part I don't agree with.

The only positive the draft has is success for the stars of the league and the egotistical coaches. Every coach has the intention of winning, but as posted earlier the late bloomers get lost in the shuffle. Those kids sometimes lose interest and enjoyment for the game.

 

Every Pee Wee league should teach kids how to play football properly and teach them all of the great things about the game of football. Winning should be a bi-product of how well the players learn the fundamentals, supplemented by their ability.

Just to set the record straight on this. The draft was setup that connor kid's played together all the way through because of transportation issues (to far to drive from hebron or burlington to florence for practices), because majority

of the teams were based in florence. But the coach's(mainly the coach's) and parents complained, because they felt this was a unfair advantage for connor and got the switch to be a league wide draft. If I recall connor did win there state title with alot of the players, that played together all the way through the pee wee system before the change was made.

I dread to suggest what the Ft Thomas League does because of the possible "people in Ft. Thomas think every thing they do is right" reaction, but I'll do it any way.

 

In Ft. T (unless things have changed in the last several years), after all the enrolmment applications have been submitted (well, at least those turned in on time) the kids are divided geographically based on the number of teams in the respective division. Geography is used primarily because of transportation issues. Lots of kids ride bikes to practices and towards the end of the season it's dark by the end of practice. The league doesn't want kids riding their bikes home in the dark after practice. The division is done by the league board with some consultation of the head coaches (for example, if geography would result in 2 8th grade qbs being on one team and there being no 8th grade qbs on another team relatively close, then one of the 8th grade qbs could be moved to the other team). If the teams have too many players in the opinion of the Board, an additional team will be created and coaches appointed (that's hardly ever a problem finding Dads to coach). Kids signing up late do so with the understanding that they will assigned to the team they are "needed", not by geography (again for example, if a big kid signs up late, he'll be placed on the team lacking big kids to try and balance the "talent" as much as is reasonably possible).

 

It's not perfect and can result in some grumbling by some coaches on occassion, but for the most part the coaches realize we are only talking youth football, not the Super Bowl. Most coaches recognize their win loss record is not a reflection on their knowledge of the game, their past performance as a football player or their manhood and accept what they get and move on to try to make the game fun for the kids and teach them a few fundamentals. All in all, it works pretty well.

What is the average number of kids per team? Do they get all the kids in each Saturday during the game, or do they play a 5th quarter?

All the kids play! In grades 3-6 they all play at least 1 and 1/2 quarters and grades 7-8 they play the 2nd quarter. The (2's) in the younger ranks play the 2nd and 1/2 the 3rd quarter. In grades 7-8 they do a good job of being sure each of the 4 teams have a skilled QB. The coaches get together and understand the program is not about wins and losses but about grooming the boys moving forward. We went from a 9-1 season to 1-9 and I have to tell you the best coaching job I have done was during our losing season. Obviously everybody plays to win, but they all get the same trophy at the end of the season. Youth ranks are to develop talent, get all involved, teach the boys to have fun and passion for the game :sssh: I might add it is not just Ft Thomas kids, but kids that will be going to surrounding schools as well.

 

It does work and the boys are having fun. I have boys that could and would start in the NKYFL Red Devils program and they never felt they needed to play; which shows you that a well thought out community system works. Obviously it is not perfect, but I would put it against anything out there.

We agree to disagree. My source is someone who has been with the league from day 1. BTW, one reason Conner won the state championship: BOB LEWIS.

A lot of those kids that were members of the state title team were from the Cherry Hill/Florence area that attended Conner but played for "Florence" PeeWee teams. There were several Blackhawks on the title team as well and they were a Florence team at the time and they practice in front of Mary Queen of Heaven.

 

Then, now Sheriff Mike Helmig and his dad, Al took over the the junior and senior division teams. They had good success and helped to get things rolling as far as kids coming out to play football.At the same time the Bearcats midget team went several years and won about one game a year and struggled to have 20 kids on their team. Then Al Wolf took over and he did the same thing with the Bearcats. He turned the program around through good organization and coaching coupled with very good parental support.

 

The rest of the county up until the mid 80's did not want to draft Burlington kids because there simply was not enough of them. And the state team was not made up of only Burlington/Hebron kids there were quite a few Florence/Erlanger kids on that team.

 

Now having said that I would like to see the Senior teams align by high school districts.
