First it is Conner.

 

 

Conner won state in 1983. The BCPWFL teams that played in Burlington were the laughing stock of the league and struggled to have enough players on their team until they won state. A lot of those kids that were members of the state title team were from the Cherry Hill/Florence area that attended Conner but played for "Florence" PeeWee teams. There were several Blackhawks on the title team as well and they were a Florence team at the time and they practice in front of Mary Queen of Heaven.

 

Then, now Sheriff Mike Helmig and his dad, Al took over the the junior and senior division teams. They had good success and helped to get things rolling as far as kids coming out to play football.At the same time the Bearcats midget team went several years and won about one game a year and struggled to have 20 kids on their team. Then Al Wolf took over and he did the same thing with the Bearcats. He turned the program around through good organization and coaching coupled with very good parental support.

 

The rest of the county up until the mid 80's did not want to draft Burlington kids because there simply was not enough of them. And the state team was not made up of only Burlington/Hebron kids there were quite a few Florence/Erlanger kids on that team.

 

Now having said that I would like to see the Senior teams align by high school districts.

DD as you know Coach Trosper and Warner (not sure about Boone and Cooper) went to at least one of the league meetings and tried to pitch this idea, unfortunately the majority of the league officials and coaches didn't want to have anything to do with it. So, they were given the opportunity to draft within their own district and are continuing to choose not to. I will say that some of the the coaches are doing their best to adhere to this philosophy but it is difficult when others aren't on board. I am pretty sure this is the reason that the push has begun.

 

Not sure about cost and funding, however I have heard the idea of the Ryle program would likely help with this.

I have always thought they just aren't able to put the idea together. They try to get 10 different opinions and it causes a lot of confusion. I would like to see Stacy put together a committee of 3-4 coaches and let them run with the project. I don't think it would be that hard.

That depends on the coaches he decides to have on that committee. You have to get away from the old school good ole boy network and use some business minded coaches as well.

Oh I agree with you. Stacy is a good guy and runs a good show. I think he could easily find the right guys to do it.

The word in Union is that Ryle supporters have put into work to start their youth football program the coming 2010 season. This will pull some talented kids away from the Boone County Pee Wee football league and guide them towards their future high schools game sets.

My question is; how many kids will be a part of this, and who are some of the top talented youths in that area? I know of maybe 5, but it takes more than 5 to field a team.

Any thoughts or answers?

For now, I think it's just the 6th,7th and 8th graders which is the BCPWFL senior division and second year junior division players.

There has not been any talk at the middle schools about starting football programs. It has to be through some other entity.

I have been a coach in the BCYFL for 4 years and I proposed a plan to divide by region and high school at one of the coaches meetings last season. Most of the coaches in the room were either against the idea or were stubborn that the idea could not work even though the plan is simple. I believe that using a school zone map and dividing kids to play in the district that will feed their high school is both easy and advantageous to all of the Boone County schools, but I was very frustrated at the response from the leaders of the BCYFL. I no longer attend the meetings.

I had also heard that the group that is trying to get this "AAU" Union team together are parents that were unhappy with where their kids were drafted. I do not think that this is the way to organize a successful program. This needs to be done from top to bottom with coach Warners involvement. The involvement from coach Warner may be coming sooner rather than later.

It has been discussed a lot more than some realize, particularly since Cooper opened, 2 years ago. That now it makes the number of high schools 4 and the number of teams in the Senior division 8, simple math 2 teams per high school. Before that there were 8 teams and 3 schools.

The vast majority of rational people would like to know why the BOE refuses to allow middle school football. I made a personal proposal to then Super Blavatt about starting middle school football. The league offered to help with the equipment to help offset the initial costs for the school. Because at the time the league was growing very fast and the league thought that it would be better to concentrate on the 1-6 grade divisions and increase the number of teams for those divisions. With only one field there is a limited amount of time for games on the weekends.

 

The Super/BOE pretty much said no thanks before I finished the proposal.

Also, some might have forgotten a major reason why the BCPWFL owns their own field is because the high schools would no longer allow them to play games on their fields.

Maybe this will be a wake up call to the BCPWFL?:idunno: If they do nothing, then you will probably see Conner, Cooper and Boone Co follow Ryles footsteps. That would basically kill BCPWFL's Senior division.
