Quirky pet habits

Featured Replies

Do you pets have strange habits that you can't really explain? My dog Wrigley is the best dog in the world. He is so sweet and gentle and loves everybody, especially kids. He is incredibly well-behaved and I could take him anywhere and he would fit in. That being said, he has this "thing" for dirty laundry. I know that is somewhat common, but Wrigley's quirk is that he leaves it all over the house. He doesn't chew it, lay on it, rip it, etc. he just puts it in different places of the house. He's very sneaky about it, so rarely is he caught. You will just walk in a room and find dirty underwear or shirts or whatever in the floor. I used to get on my kids about leaving stuff in the floor, but now I know most of the time, it is the dog! If the laundry room door is open, then whatever is in the hamper is fair game. I have to be careful about people coming over unannounced because my bra might be in the family room floor! Just try explaining that to a guest! At times our house looks like the remains of a drunken house party the night before!

Do any of your pets have strange habits?

When we let our dog out, she will not just go straight into the yard. She will walk off the porch onto our sidewalk that goes to the street sidewalk. She then turns left on the street sidewalk, goes to our neighbors driveway. Walks about halfway back on his driveway, then enters back into our yard to take care of business. It is funny. She will not go until she performs this ritual.

Great thread. I have noticed a couple strange behaviors for my cats as well.

My one cat, Fidget, never makes a peep unless she has a toy mouse in her mouth. She only carries the toy mouse around at night. While she's carrying the mouse in her mouth, she will make a high-pitched meowing sound.

My other cat, Blanny, is quite a bit noisier. Every morning about an hour or so before my alarm is set to go off, she wakes me up with her incessent meowing. I have found that there are only two ways to get her to be quiet. Either I have to coax her to lay down (she only meows when she is up and moving around) or I have to escort her out of my bedroom and shut the door. Usually, I just get up immediately and go towards my bedroom door. She promptly exits and stops meowing. I then plop back down in bed for my last hour of sleep.

Very strange habits these cats have acquired...

I have a similar quirk with my dog and dirty laundry. He usually goes for the dirty laundry, but any clothes at all intrigue him really.

Like you, he doesn't chew them, but he likes to misplace them and lay on them/lick them. It's gross.

He will also lick his front paws for about 5-10 minutes before he goes to sleep.

Similar to the laundry. He has a thing for rearranging shoes. Anytime I take a shower, inevitably, when I get out of the shower, I will find my shoes thrown around the living room. Most often, when I open the door to the bathroom, I will find my flip flops in front of the bathroom door. It's kind of strange. He doesn't chew on them, he just moves them as if he's trying to say, "Hey, you'll need these when you get out of the shower."

My dog barks his head off when either my wife or I get up to leave for the morning. He is really vicious acting, he can't stand for us to leave the bed in the mornings. He had never done that until I left for a vacation with my buddy and left my wife at home, when I got back he started the habit and it hasn't stopped for a single day since.

Another one is he will stare out the window of our house all day sitting on the couch and when he sees people walking up our street he goes and grabs a stuffed animal and shakes it furiously like he is going to rip someone apart. He will shake the animal so hard I've seen him slng it about 15 feet before and he will run from front door to back door trying to see the walkers.

He also licks his feet a long time before going to bed.

The last 2 weeks or so, he has begun to annoy me because he starts whining and crawling on me at night around 2am every morning wanting outside. I of course take him.

Only thing that keeps my dog out of the water is when it is frozen. When the cover is off the pool she lives in it. In and out, all day long.

Guess it beats chasing cars!

When I lived in Nashville several years ago, I had a cat named Bill. Bill was really cool but he had a habit of gathering stuff all over the apartment and piling it under my bed. Every week or so, I would check under my bed and would find various items in a neat pile, items such as socks, a pencil, paper towels, etc.

One day when going to work, I opened the door to leave, and Bill ran out never to return.

I currently have a cat who, when hungry, will follow closely behind me anywhere I walk in the house and will grab onto my leg with her front paws and lightly bite my leg in an attempt to coerce me into feeding her. She is one of the coolest cats I've ever had.

Our cat only has two things she considers toys. One is a straw and if either of us ever come home with a drink that has a straw in it she is begging for the straw in minutes. The other is q tips. Mrs GT can't even put them in her garbage can in the bathroom because the cat will take them out. Once she has said straw ot q tip she only has one need for them. She takes it to the top of the stairs on the 2nd floor and drops it down the steps to try and chase it to the bottom. Once the "toy" is at the bottom of the steps on the 1st floor she is done with it...

My dog Jack likes to display his bone burying skills indoors. He will find a place that he wants to use and go through the whole digging and recovering with dirt routine. He never actually digs a hole, just sits his bone on the carpet, couch or whatever it is but in his mind it is a foot deep. The best part is when he goes to get the bone out of the "hole" he never uncovers it, just grabs it and runs.

I also noticed he doesn't do this outside with his bones. He just drops them somewhere and that is good enough for him.

Not sure this is "quirky" as much as it is annoying and disgusting, but our little poodle (about 1 year old) will not go #2 outside. #1 she has no problems, but #2 she insists on dropping in the house. Luckily, she's only five pounds, so they're miniscule "droppings."

The other thing is that neither of our dogs (other one is a 10-pound Pomapoo) will eat out of their dish. Put the food in your hand or on the floor, no problem. But not out of the dish. Weird.

And the little one insists on sleeping on top of me. On my chest, my neck, my legs, my head - but she has to be in contact with me for some odd reason. If we put her out of the room, she cries and cries. I've always had this effect on women . . . .

I feel your pain. And if it's just a tiny mud puddle mine will try to dig it deeper then jump up and down splashing in it ( I try to act mad when this happens, to no avail). I can't walk him by the Ohio or he whines the entire time. If he is on a boat, the second the boat stops he is right in the water. I took him down to Bernheim the last two weekends to swim in the ponds they have there and I think it was his happiest moment in his two years; swimming after geese forever.

His list of other quirky things is a mile long:

- He develops periods where he won't go outside at night unless I walk out there with him. The periods seem to coincide with the temperature outside.

- He loves to play SO much that generally since there are always people and dogs at my house he lets his food sit in the bowl until night and devours the whole thing when there is nothing awake or in my room to play with him.

- There is a sidewalk connecting my back door to the carriage house in the back. When his roommate (a two year old boxer) isn't there he goes to the right side of the sidewalk to sniff the tree, does a little circle around the grass on the left side, then picks a spot right in the center of said grass to go #2. Same thing everytime.

- He has open access to the entire house all day long, not once does he touch any of my socks, but routinely drags my roommates dress socks all around the house. He doesn't chew them but a lot of time him and the boxer will play tug of war with them. My roommate has long given up on attempting to stop this.

- If he accidentally leaves his bone outside over night it is the VERY first thing he goes to as soon as he wakes up in the morning. I'm pretty sure he is like that dog in the commercial always thinking someone is out to get his bone.

- This is probably the favorite around the house. Once the play is out of them the boxer will be investigating the yard and Simba will get as low to the ground as he can and stalk her. He always ends the stalk with a final dash and pounce. I've had him since he was a puppy and this still cracks me up everytime.

My dog is VERY quirky.

  • He hates big dogs.
  • He hates most men, especially men in uniform, tall men, men with deep voices, men wearing hats, men running....
  • He hates anyone on the other side of the fence or door.
  • He knows when the mail man is due. He sits on top of the chair by the window at the same time every day and waits for him.
  • He won't eat unless I'm at home.
  • At home, he won't go outside to go to the bathroom unless I'm the one who lets him out. He doesn't go in the house, though.
  • If he drops a piece of his food on the floor, he'll go back and eat that piece before he'll eat out of his bowl again.
  • He hates rain if it's in the back yard. If we leave the house through the front door with his leash on, he'll go out with no problem.
  • He hates when people touch me. He can't STAND it when people hug me. He goes crazy.
  • He will not play with anything that I don't specifically give to him.
  • He loves to watch basketball on TV
  • He hates to have his feet touched.
  • He won't walk in puddles.
  • If anything is different on any of our walks, he balks. Once, after a windstorm, a tree was lying across the sidewalk and into street. He would NOT go around it. We had to turn around and go back the way we came.
  • In the park, there are wooden bridges. When it snows, he won't go over the bridges. I have to carry him.
  • He won't poop unless there is a clump of tall grass, a pile of leaves, or a small bush or plant to poop in.
  • He deliberately turns his back on you when he's pooping, and if you walk around so that you're facing him, he'll turn around in a circle until his back is to you again.
  • He loves my son's dog...until my son leaves the house and doesn't take his dog with him. Then, he doesn't like him at all.
  • If we wake up before the alarm, or no alarm goes off, he knows he gets to go on a walk. If the alarm goes off, he knows there's no walk.

Those are a few. He has many more.

Jack has a couple quirky habits...

He won't eat his food from the dish. Every single time he's fed, he'll go get the food from his bowl, with his mouth mind you, and drop it all over the floor. He then proceeds to play with said food throughout the course of the day, eating pieces here and there until by the end of the night it's gone.

He also plays fetch with himself. If no one will throw him his toys, he'll grab one and start jumping around, throwing it all over the house. He then runs and gets it, takes it back to where he threw it from, and repeats.

If his toy ends up somewhere he can't get, like on the mantle, instead of sitting and whining for it or barking, he simply goes to his toy box, gets another toy and repeats the entire process.
