April 14, 201016 yr I thought it was an interesting article, although I think he stretched a bit on Bush in order to mute the Obama charge of being radical. Not sure when you have Korea and Vietnam that the pre-emptive doctrine is radical. My guess is that you can find something in every President's term with which to charge him as a radical.
April 14, 201016 yr Lincoln wouldn't be considered more radical than Obama? His political views, upon his election, are one of the things that lead the south to succeed from the Union and to a war that cost the lives over 650,000 people. I find it difficult to label someone a radical because others chose insurrection. Preserving the Union is an inherently conservative position. The radicals were those who chose war rather than abide by an election. His Emancipation Proclamation wasn't more radical than anything that Obama has done? I agree that the Emancipation Proclamation was a radical step. However, given the circumstances of 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation wasn't nearly as radical as it could have been. It could have been issued much earlier. It could have freed more slaves than it did. I therefore conclude that Lincoln deviated from precedent due to the exigencies of the times and not because he was a radical by choice or disposition.

Agreed. The emancipation proclamation was as soft as it could have been under the circumstances towards slavery and the south. It should be kept in mind that had Lincoln lived, reconstruction would have also been a softer process.

April 14, 201016 yr the whole "michelle makes a slip" thread is a reminder that the president is African. That is the whole point of the birther movement is to suggest that Obama is black. The southern secessionist movement is because he is black, the new Oklahoma militia is because he is black. Radical . . . Continued Bush's bailout policy - is that radical? Propped up the countries automotive industry - to save jobs and peoples lives, is that radical Continued Bush's war in Afghanistan, and increased the troop level, is that radical Cut taxes on small businesses - is that Radical Cut taxes on most of middle American - is that radical. Want to try the underbomber in court, like Bush did with Reid - is that RADICAL? Wants to regulate banks so that they don't take unnecessary risks and lose the money people have invested in them thus destroying lives - is that really radical? healthcare - no public option, the only radical thing is probably the individual mandate (which was first put out there by McCain) but if we don't have it the insurance companies will fail because people will only buy it when they get sick, so the insurance companies will only be in service for sick people and go out of business. Individual Mandate is actually the most CONSERVATIVE part of it . . . personal responsibility. Quit living off of the kindness of those who buy insurance and pay for your emergency room visits when you get sick, or when you stiff the hospital. Personal responsibility. Really, I am the most liberal poster on here?:ylsuper:

April 14, 201016 yr I whole heartedly agree with all of them, and the fact that Obama is not radical. He is however, "black" said in a whispered tone as if to convey there is something wrong with that. Also plenty of sarcasm. You are so wrong on this statement. The only people who bring this up are liberals who wish to try to find racism to divert attention away from their big government programs.

Still not sure how that is a radical program, whether it failed or not. Plus, I think the school is still out on whether any of these programs will be beneficial. Did I not see on Squawk this morning that the DJIA and Market are going gangbuster. Up over 11000, historical path not seen in a couple of decades?

There was regulation in place to watch over the banking industry, but the government failed to do its job. More regulation does not mean the government will do a better job. Health care is none of the government's business. Tax breaks are always good, even somebody like Obama gets something right once and awhile. Even though Obama was going to pull our troops out rapidly, even he has to admit to reality on this one.

He said the focus should have always been on Afghanistan. Right or wrong he has not really done anything radical.
April 14, 201016 yr So, I guess you can have radical ideas but that doesn't make you a radical? Where did I say that Lincoln had radical ideas? I said he took a radical step. But I also noted he was slow to take that step and did not as big a step as he could have. In addition, he only resorted to that step as a means of winning a war. What I'm saying is that if a person takes a radical step out of necessity, then that person is not necessarily a radical. As far as Lincoln's ideas, I would point to his First and Second Inaugural Addresses as better indicators of his ideas.
