I am not saying a suit and tie necessarily. It would not "be right" simply because it is all we know. It is a very unusual tradition.

I think there is actually. Seems like Francona was risking trouble by wearing the pullover...I think he had to show the jersey was under there at one point.

Or if Stan Van Gundy wore a Magic uniform. That would be odd. Again, it is all you and I have ever seen so it seems like it would be odd in anything other than a uniform. The idea of wearing a uniform in every other sport seems ridiculous, but why not in baseball?

I have always thought it was dumb looking. If they were wearing what most football coaches wear during game, then the only odd thing about a manager walking to the mound, is why doesn't he look silly anymore.

That's just it though. The manager enters the game to make changes, the first base coach and the third base coach are on the field of play. In football and basketball they only enter the game in emergencies. In baseball they're apart of the game and the field of play.

Or if Mark Mangino wore football pads.

Its actualy not a rule. Its more of one of the "unwritten" rules of baseball. The only manager to ever not wear a uniform was Connie Mack. He liked suits so that is what he wore, plus he never left the dugout. The reason managers wear the uniform is, like someone stated earlier, they are actually part of the game once they enter onto the field of play.

How is a manager "part of a game" any more than a coach who talks to the QB in between plays? Because they walk on to the field? They can't insert themselves in to the lineup can they? I guess I understand the first and third base coaches being part of the game, but it still does not answer as to why they wear a uniform either :lol:.

You're absolutley right. I believe he was actually caught once not wearing the jersey underneath the windbreaker and fined.

That's actualy exactly where it came from. Back then playesr didn't want to realize they didn't have it anymore so it took them forever to actually retire. Owners of teams realized this and let the players become managers because since they had been around so long they in turn had alot of knowledge about the game. Instead of just giving them the boot they let them be managers/players, hence the wearing of the uni's.
