Track the Reds (Week 1)

Wily Mo Pena had similar tools. Teams tried to let him learn the strike zone and plate discipline at the Major League level--look how he turned out. I'd hate to see it happen with Francisco.
Anyone that looks at Francisco's minor league numbers can determine that he's a terrible free swinger. I don't know why the Reds kept him over Balentien.

Francisco will swing at anything that doesn't hit him in the face--and he'll swing at that with 2 strikes. He doesn't need to be getting sporadic playing time at the big league level. He needs to be in AAA learning some plate discipline. Handling him like this is a good way to ruin a guy with a lot of raw power and talent.

I agree he won't be up here much longer.

He is probably on his way to Louisville to make room for Leake tomorrow. I was shocked when Rusty Dusty let Francisco lead off the ninth inning. A pitcher who has trouble throwing strikes versus a Rookie that swings at anything. :idunno::idunno::idunno::idunno:

^ To be fair Marmol was dealing today but I see what your sayin.

Marmol was lights out. Reds need to win tomorrow to be .500 heading into a road trip.

Just got back from Wrigley south... If Harang stops giving up the long ball he will probably be okay. I don't know if the ballpark is catching up with him or not. The Reds really need Votto and Rolen in the lineup along with Phillips who does what he does.

Bruce keeps getting robbed, that sucks for him.

Marmol had some electric stuff, but two of every three pitches were still out of the strike zone. The Reds' hitters were swinging at everything that left his hand.

Leake will become the first drafted player in a decade to make his major league debut without appearing in the minors.

There have been quite a few hyped young arms to come through Cincinnati over the past few years, from Homer Bailey, Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez to current phenom Aroldis Chapman.

None of those pitchers did what Leake will do Sunday, when he becomes the 21st player since the draft began in 1965 to bypass the minor leagues altogether when he makes his major league debut. The most recent to do so Xavier Nady just happens to be an outfielder with Chicago.

“It’s rare,” Baker told the Reds’ official Web site. “Most players don’t have the maturity level. He’s a competitor. He can locate as well as any young pitcher I’ve seen.”

The last Cincinnati players to make their major league debuts without appearing in the minors were Bobby Henrich, Jay Hook and Don Pavletich in 1957.

I'm a Chicago fan and I'm excited to see the kid pitch

Leake and Chapman both pitching today, makes for an interesting day for the Reds future.

What moves did the Reds make?

The Reds today officially added Mike Leake to the roster and optioned IF/OF Juan Francisco to Louisville, and also designated LHP Pedro Viola for assignment.
