March 29, 201016 yr We did have to pass it to find out what's in it. I can hardly wait for the next hidden agenda to surface. A requirement tucked into the nation’s massive health care bill will make calorie counts impossible for thousands of restaurants to hide and difficult for consumers to ignore. More than 200,000 fast food and other chain restaurants will have to include calorie counts on menus, menu boards and even drive-throughs. The new law, which applies to any restaurant with 20 or more locations, directs the Food and Drug Administration to create a new national standard for menu labeling, superseding a growing number of state and city laws. President Barack Obama was expected to sign the health care legislation Tuesday. The idea is to make sure that customers process the calorie information as they are ordering. Many restaurants currently post nutritional information in a hallway, on a hamburger wrapper or on their Web site. The new law will make calories immediately available for most items. “The nutrition information is right on the menu or menu board next to the name of the menu item, rather than in a pamphlet or in tiny print on a poster, so that consumers can see it when they are making ordering decisions,” says Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin, chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, who wrote the provision. Another Hidded ObamaCare Mandate No, it's not a real big deal, but come on folks, it's just another example of the stupidity coming from this administration. What seriously concerned person about caloric intake is going order something they already know is bad for them? Do you really think the responsible person is going to say "oh look, that triple Wendy's burger with bacon and mayo has too many calories, thank God they posted this info or I might have done harm to myself"? No, people that eat this stuff is going to continue to eat it no matter how many warnings or menu labeling boards they put in restaurants. Irresponsible people don't care.

About as dumb as the warning on tobacco products.
March 29, 201016 yr Author But, if you wash it down with a Diet Coke...they cancel each other out!:lol: That does seem to be the theory of our times.
March 29, 201016 yr My question is...how large are these menu boards going to have to be to include all of this information? I mean, if legislators are so concerned with getting these calorie counts away from "tiny print on a poster"...good night, the drive thru menu will be the entire width of a building!

I'm not sure how they get this on their boards. I do think the impact will be minimal but there will be people who are impacted.

March 29, 201016 yr As someone who has watched calories and lost 20 pounds in the past two months, I think it's a great idea. I'd like to know if the chicken sandwich at McDonalds has more calories than their fish sandwich. Does the salad at McDonalds have fewer calories than the salad at Wendy's? What about Wendy's fish sandwich? I think it's a great idea. I also think it's being done in response to the frivilous lawsuits filed by fat people who sued because fast food made them fat. They have no excuse now because the calorie counts will be posted. I have no problem with a law that helps people make healthy choices, regardless of what political party proposed and passed it. That's the major problem with our country now.
March 29, 201016 yr I'm just wondering how restaurants that do a lot of their menu boards with "value meals", where they combine a sandwich with a side (usually fries) and a drink, are going to be able to distinguish everything. You can't just put up one calorie number for the entire thing, as the drink alone could affect that total. And what happens when you "super-size" for a larger size fry and/or drink? There's going to be so many numbers up there, I'd imagine it'll create a lot of confusion.
March 29, 201016 yr Put a separate panel up that lists the calorie count. It doesn't have to be posted next to the burger or the price

Yes, there may be "healthier" choices...but, it's really like choosing the lesser of two evils IMO.

However, I do not know the calorie count of a single BK hamburger. I do know that I have a range that I shoot for at every meal. Maybe seeing what the count will help drive more people to fish sandwiches and salads. I'm not asking them to take the triple Whopper off the menu.
