March 28, 201016 yr Depending upon his recruiting....I'd say he has til year 4 before he starts feeling the heat if no Final Four, maybe year 3 though. I agree with this. Given how passionate the UK fans are, and that Cal is being paid an outrageous amount of money, he will need to win a title soon in order to make the fan base happy. UK is the winningest program (although they are not the premier basketball program) and Calipari is the highest paid coach... the fans will expect results soon (and by results, I mean national titles).
March 28, 201016 yr Frankly, if he puts together a team this talented again next year and fails to produce a FF berth at least, the disenchantment will begin in earnest for many. The only reason there's not more of it this year is because it's been a few years since UK has been this close. Three years and no FF berth and he's history, and the national media's chorus of "UK fans are impossible to please" will be in full throat.

Every Kentucky fans loves John Calipari. He has been perfect thus far, despite last night's loss. Another great recruiting class will help heal the wounds, and we'll go at it again next season. It will be at least 4-5 years before Cal's seat even gets warm. His ability to speak & appease people will go a long way. Everybody knew that this team had a few weaknesses (youth, inability to shoot, defensive lapses, etc.). Another thing that people appreciate is that Cal is one of the biggest critics of his own teams. After Billy Clyde, I think people respect Cal's ability to speak to the media & communicate with the common fan. Tubby fell out of favor because he was unwilling to make changes & did not recruit effectively. Tubby, on multiple occasions, lost control of his team. Between "Team Turmoil" and the Randolph Morris saga, it was evident that Tubby (and his staff) were not always in control. That does not seem to be the case with Calipari.

Never say "every"....that is far from true.

I think you are wildly optimistic in your assessment of the patience of the UK fan base. None of Tubby and BCG's warts would've mattered if they were delivering FF berths and National Championships.

I suppose that somewhere between my outrageous optimism and your predictable derogations therein lies the truth.
March 28, 201016 yr At this point of Cal's tenure he has done a fantastic job. In March 2009 UK fans would have been happy to just be back in the tournament, much less the final 8. The inexperience got us. We may continue to have some 1 and dones, but so do other schools that win the title. It takes some luck and avoiding bad luck. Cal is the absolute best coach in the country for the UK job. The fans will stay with him because they can see that we will have chances. It got to the point with Tubby (who is a great coach) that the fans did not believe we had the players to win it (and we did not) and no sign that that was going to change. This will not happen with Cal there. UK will win a National Championship at some point under his leadership.
March 29, 201016 yr A poster with a WVU player in his avatar starts the thread and UK fans catch heck for it. Makes no SENSE. For myself and I'm sure 98% of UK fans, Cal can remain as long as he wants as long as he still shows LOVE for the UK programs as he did this year with all the press we got locally and nationally.
March 29, 201016 yr I think Cal will be fine for a while with out any final 4's, but I think his undoing will be what has followed him from his other schools. :sssh:
March 29, 201016 yr This may just be the dumbest thread ever started on BGP's! Cal takes a program from the NIT to the Elite 8 and some Mountainer starts this crap. He has what all of 4 players he recruited on the team. Tubby took heat for taking a great program to an average program after Pitinos players where gone. Cal took over a program on the down hill slide and goes to the Elite 8 in one year. TOTALLY different situation with TOTALLY different results (so far)

Cal took over a program on the down hill slide and goes to the Elite 8 in one year. TOTALLY different situation with TOTALLY different results (so far) Tubby was ridiculed for JUST an Elite 8 appearance. If memory serves he lost one to Michigan State that was coached by, according to another thread, the best college basketball coach in the business today and another to Marquette who had a player that will turn out to be one of the top 30 players of all time in the NBA. Both of those teams were better than WVU. And that was considered failing for those wanting Tubby gone.
March 29, 201016 yr Kentucky is in the midst of their longest Final Four drought in program history. For his sake, he had better get to one soon. It's one thing to not make the Final Four when you dont have the talent (Tubby's final years and BCG). It's another thing to have the talent and not make it.
March 29, 201016 yr Wow..Where have all these bandwagon WV fans came from? Everyone who follows a bad basketball team but lives in Kentucky now likes WVU. Kind of pathetic really, but you can't let it get to you. Since there are no UCLA fans (the only fans who can really say much of anything to UK fans) on here that I know of, it's kind of funny because deep down they know that their programs just don't hold a candle..........
March 29, 201016 yr As for firing Cal who do you guys suggest we hire or who do you think people will want? Izzo didn't want to come here. Billy Donovan is a joke right now and seems to have lost his magic.

Billy Donovan is a joke right now and seems to have lost his magic. I don't know if that is entirely true. I think Kentucky could have lured him away last year. We'll never know, but that's just my opinion. If it were this season, I don't think so. He has overcome some big adversity this year to make it to the Final Four.
