It always is like this at this time of year. The problem with Campbell County's football field during the season it is Berumda grass and it also has the rubber pellets on it or lack there of. The pellets were suppose to be applied a couple of years ago to hold the heat in for the Berumda grass as they made the change to it probably 4 or 5 years ago. If you get close up on the field you can see where the Berumda took and where it never did which came up as weeds. I want to say they are trying to kill off the weeds.

 

For all that is played on the field they should go to turf. During the week with the middle school programs (I think there are 3 teams), CCYFL, freshman - varsity teams there can be alot of games on this field. I remember at one point there were almost 20 games played on there before the Varsity ever had a game on it.

 

It is hard to believe someone higher up in the central office does not realize how much traffic/games played on the field.

 

I totally agree. They really messed up when they did not allow enough land for a new football stadium at the new high school location. With the new stadium should have came turf. Everything in this county is poorly planned. I will say this though, they have an excellent baseball and softball facility. They really need a new football stadium but I don't know if I would put too much money into the football program until they improve. To see how good these kids are in middle school and youth football and then turn around and bomb in high school is sad. There is something wrong in CCHS with football when you have so much talent and so little to show for it.

I hope you are right, they could use the help but don't see waggs coaching at Campbell this year or next until their is some changes in the way it is being run.

 

I'm not sure if Wags is turned off by the way the program is being run at this point, He is a big supporter of coach Styers. I think Dan would like to take over the program eventually, but not sure if he is willing to make the move than have another broken heart if he didn't get the head coaching job in a few years.

It's an election year! As for planning of the school, I think the state had a lot to do with what they were allowed to do?

What is up with CC's football field? I was there for the track meet last Saturday and it looked awful.

 

The challenge every year with the Bermuda grass @ CC is to: choke out (kill) the non-Bermuda grasses/weeds that invade the field in the spring and to get mother nature to cooperate with the right combination of heat and rainfall.

You are partially correct. The "crumb rubber" was applied (perhaps 8-9 years ago) long before the field went to Bermuda. The non-Bermuda grass could not take the heat generated by the crumb rubber. After a few years, it was thought that Bermuda would do better with the heat generated by the rubber mix.

 

The idea behind the crumb rubber was that it would make for a "softer" playing surface which would reduce player injuries. There are varying opinions on whether the rubber did what it was supposed to do.

The biggest problem is the lady who runs the fields for Campbell CTY schools.

She has made poor decisions concerning all fields. The money she has wasted on grass, sod, rubber tire(twice), grass and sod again and then Bermuda grass, would have paid for turf. They have redone the track also in the last 8 years. It is not in any better shape. And now the field still looks worse then when she started.

I would love to see how much money it has taken to do all of this and still pay people to water the grass, cut and apply chemicals and then it still needs to be stripped every week.

Management has never been a strong suit for the Board of Ed of Campbell Cty.

Nobody does it like Highlands. They let everybody use there field. Soccer, T-ball, coach pitch. Youth football. That includes practice. No one is denied use. The lady who runs Highlands field says yes to every child that needs a place to play.That is why Highlands is successful in everything they do.

I am not sure who the "she" is that you are talking about in these threads but the rubber tire route was all brought upon by a past AD by the name of Joe Roberts. It was suppose to be such a futuristic idea! You are right when you say it wasn't thought out or planned very well! Too many behind the scene people wanting what they want and too many people being puppets for the wrong cause. Oh yea, you are correct about the large amount of money spent but not by "she" but by Joe Roberts and his fellow friends. I still wonder if some of that money was ever paid back to the once named CAN - Camels Athletic Network. Just my thoughts and opinion...

Central Office has a good view of the desert, and there is no one qualified there to correct the problem. For five years it has looked the same with no improvement. You would think that somone would contact another school and ask them what to do.
