Elliott County's coach did the exact thing this past year. It makes you feel like the coach was only there to begin with because of a select few athletes/players and not for everyone like they should be.

 

 

Wasn't he there for over 30 years, though? He was there for some pretty rough years and not just the glory days of the past few seasons. I think Coach Mays earned the right to go out on top.

Perhaps they have other reasons, but in this area, at one particular school, it has happened twice. Strange coincidence? I don't think so.

I'm not going to post the name or school simply because it could have been for very personal reasons. This is all speculation on my part and wonder what the general consensus is. I'm talking about the coincidence of the situations.

Some coaches are better coaches of talent than others. Some coaches are better builders of talent. I wouldnt want a coach who is the talent-coach trying to rebuild my program. And I wouldnt want the program-builder taking over a veteran team.

I had coaches and a few teachers thinking about retirement when I was in high school.

Granted Rick Mays retired after the 2009 season for Elliott County, but he had retired and came back before hand to coach the Lions! Rick and Dale Ferguson were the two individuals responsible for alot of the success of that great group so you can't claim he just used them and quit.

From the standpoint of a player who was caught in the transition you speak of, I'd would personally rather have a new coach who put his heart in it than to play for a coach who wished he'd retired earlier and was mailing it in.
