What was the deal with one of the Holmes players refusing to stand for the National Anthem?

 

There was no national anthem prior to the second game. Guess that is why he didn't stand for it. :sssh:

I'd also have to question some parts of this post.

 

1. You say Pittman lacks basketball IQ but I'm pretty sure he picked up his 3rd foul midway through the third quarter but still was able to stay on the court and not sit, because he was smart defensively. That's high basketball IQ, IMO.

 

2. I question how many times you've actually seen Holmes this year. I'm going to assume not very often because if you have seen them as much as me, you'd know that Pittman is averaging 18 ppg because he stays down on the blocks and doesn't wander outside as much as he did last year. He had an off shooting night tonight but still poured in 18 ppg and pulled down 9 rpg. I'd hate to see what this kid is like when he plays "smart basketball with a high IQ." To say Pittman doesn't deserve the award is very disrespectful to that young man.

 

3. Check the stats on Rice last night. You'll notice he didn't even shoot that much. And when he did shoot, it was down low. Sure he had one or two turnovers but what player doesn't make mistakes? They're high school kids. Nobody is perfect.

 

4. You can point out all the weaknesses you want with this player or that player, or Holmes as a team. But the bottom line is, despite all these weaknesses that this group supposedly posseses after every game, they continue to win. I believe some of the same things were said about Holmes last year as well.

 

But I'd love to see what the kid is like when he plays "smart basketball with a high IQ." That's pretty much what I'm saying. No disrespect to any player and you are right they are just kids, but I've seen plenty of same aged kids with less talent play with better smarts. (The St. Henry's team that played in the Sweet 16 comes to mind as well as many others). It certainly isn't impossible. I applaud the Bulldogs dominance over the recent past and am happy that the 9th finally has some State Champion hardware after so many years. I may sound like a spoiled unappreciative fan who's never satisfied, but I'd just bet that Coach Henley has been trying to fine tune these smarts of which I speak and some listen and some don't. By the time an experienced state level player is a senior you'd think that you'd see that that part of his game has come around. I haven't.

 

And yes, I've seen them play plenty of times this year as well as in the past.

 

Even though Holmes won the Sweet 16 last year, I was more excited about getting behind St. Henry awhile back when they lost in the 1st round to eventual champs Mason Co. Somehow their smarts impressed enough folks enough that they left a memorable legacy around the state to this day even though they didn't even make it to the quarterfinals. Some are wooed by dunks and flashiness, I just happen to dig smart basketball. I guess it's all just a matter of taste, and as it has been said, there's no accounting for taste.

There was a National Anthem before the Covcath/Newport game and also on the Pittman tech i believe if a kid can't do that to his teams fan section then there should be techs handed out a whole lot more. And i have been down there all week that same ref has givin out four techs in three games i saw him ref, maybe he should T himself up for having trouble getting up and down the court, let the kids play and have a little fun.

A very entertaining game. I agree the Tech fouls are really detracting from the game. I have seen several that at this stage of the contests, a simple point at the crowd, or of a flip of the ball over your shoulder, should not determine the outcome of these extremely important contests. Let the play determine who wins and loses refs.

I would like to know what the free throw stats were in this game. It seems that Holmes converted almost all of theirs and Boone just couldn't seem to hit theirs. I bet they missed at least 10.

 

IMO Gabbard played a great game and left everything out on the floor. His stat line is very good for a point guard (14 points, 6 rebs, 6 assists). I talked with him after the game and he told me he was playing hurt. He said there was no way he was going to miss this game. To have those numbers with the injuries he had is trememdous. Most kids would not have been able to play. I just think that is one of the guttsiest performances I have seen!

 

I hate that Cotton had to play his last game with only getting about 3 mins of playing time. He too is a great kid and I hate that his career had to end this way.

 

I wish Holmes the best of luck in the finals today. I think either team will represent the 9th region well at Rupp!

If during the course of a game your actions or play warrant a technical then by appropriately applying the rules of the game the official has let the play determine who wins and loses. Pulling your jersey to the side to display your chest and woofing is a taunting tactic which clearly stated before the game is an automatic technical. Is it fair to Boone if the official just lets the taunting go?

Just like a ref telling a kid to quit holding or get out of the lane, tell him to knock it off and then T him up if he continues. I don't like the actions of Pittman but earlier in the tourney a kid from CCH flipped a ball over his shoulder after a travel call and he got T'd up.

Free throw shooting from both sides was very bad. The first half Holmes was terrible from the line. I believe they were 9 for 17 with many of those front ends of the 1 and 1. They did hit them down the stretch though when they needed to. The paper said Boone Co. was 2 of 12 and Holmes 14 of 22.

Gabbard played his guts out and absolutely did it all for the Rebels. I've gotten to know him over the course of this season and sitting at the scorers' table last night, I couldn't help but to feel bad for him after the game. He was very emotional. Even though I'm a Bulldog fan, it's a shame there had to be a loser last night. Mikey is a great kid and I wish him nothing but the best in the future.

Not quite sure what you are saying here? I didn't see the CCH play you are referring to so I cannot comment on that.

This game should have been a 20-25 point blowout by Holmes, but give Boone credit for battling back to take a 1 point lead. Holmes showed down the stretch why they were the favorite to win the region again this year.

 

The officials tonight were just horrible. Officiating has ruined watching basketball games these days.

Spoken like a true homer. Pittman is just a kid. He should be able to play the game he loves without being criticized by the likes of you. Talent wise he is among the very best ballers in the commonwealth. The past three years have proven this out. Just look what the young man and his team mates have accomplished over these very dominant years and your words are very shallow. As the young Pittman has been a very key component to a great run.

 

I am not clear of the comment that was made, but from what I see and hear from reliable sources, Holmes should be concentrating on making him one of the best students in the commonwealth instead of one the best ballers. The kid has all the talent in the world, but without the proper guidance, attitude and education the road ends quickly, and as a young student/athlete, he deserves better.
