Time and Score Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Anderson lead by 10 at half. Walton goes on a 20-5 run to take a five point lead. But, turnovers and missed layups were their undoing. Congrats to Anderson they hung tough. Congrats to Walton 25-5 is not bad.
ebrown5606 Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I left at half. How much was #44 on the floor for ANDERSON? Seemed like she only played maybe 5 min. in the first half.
SportsFan62 Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Congrats to Anderson on a good win tonight and good luck the rest of the way. Great season Walton and good luck to the seniors in whatever they do in the future. They had a great season being a very young team, accomplished a lot more than what was expected IMO. Look for them to be very good in the years to come.
CincySportsFan Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I left at half. How much was #44 on the floor for ANDERSON? Seemed like she only played maybe 5 min. in the first half. I don't know what Coach Kays normal sub routine is, but she did see quite a bit of action in the second half. She did have one possession that was just a killer...brought the ball up and kept it, drove to the basket and put it up and in. I think Walton's D honest thought she was going to stop at some time and pass it off, but she never did. And while Brown did get some points, it seemed like McKee (#32) was the Bearcat killer tonight. Very soft touch on a lot of her shots. She got the kind roll and the points. There were A LOT of Walton's shots that would either rattle out, or rim out. Not saying that Walton lost the game because of the refs. But this was the second time I saw these guys, and I remain unimpressed. The one situation that stands out was when Walton had the ball under their basket, an Anderson County girl goes down (outside the lane, near the baseline). She's obviously wincing in pain. Official stands right behind her (on the baseline) and lets play continue for a second or so. Sandlin has the ball and is driving across the lane (away from the player), and just before she can shoot, he then decides to blow the whistle. In the end, Walton eventually got points after having to inbounds it, so it didn't hurt them that way. But, perhaps Clyde or some of the other officials can weigh in on this. If a team is still attacking, can/should the official whistle the play dead? Especially if the action is away from where the injured player is. Anyway...good luck to Anderson County in tomorrow's finals. And congratulations to the Lady Bearcats on a great season!
buttels Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 This will not be the last time that the WV Lady Bearcats see this far into the Regional Tournament. The entire area is proud of their accomplishments. We were glad to have covered their progress this year. Best of luck to Valarie Warren, the lone senior on this squad. The rest return for 2010-11.
LieutenantDan Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Walton is a very nice team. 8th region All-A Champs, and District Champs. Nothing to hang your head about. Congrats on a fine season.
madman Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 A hard fought battle by both teams. Neither team shot the ball well. Anderson struggled from the perimeter and Walton missed a ton of shots from within 2 feet. I think the difference was the guard play by Walton. Way too many unforced turnovers (approx. 25 total) by trying to do to much and being out of control. They really need a point guard who can handle the pressure and be a leader (the quarterback). Walton didn't pressure the ball like they usually do but Anderson's size may have contributed to this. Anderson did a good job inside and used their overall size to frustrate Walton's bigs. Both teams are extremely young and have a bright future. It was a great year for Walton and they have nothing to hang their heads about. Good luck to Anderson against SK.
ebrown5606 Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 These officials are very troubling! I saw a complete "crime scene" in the SK-SH game. I swear Blevins #55 for SK had a campfire, hotdogs, and a drink sitting in a lawnchair when she was runover! Every basketball fan on either side of the floor looked shocked. :idunno:

An official can stop play anytime he\she wants if they feel there is a legitimate/significant injury. The Anderson girl who was hurt was laying close to the lane which made it potentially more dangerous for her to recieve additional injury.
Mr. Athletics Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Walton is a very nice team. 8th region All-A Champs, and District Champs. Nothing to hang your head about. Congrats on a fine season. Ditto. Fantastic season!

If the referee swap was an experiment, I would vote to not do it next year. Don't get me wrong, there are some bad refs in the 8th but they guys at the top who usually do the regionals are pretty good.
ColonelMike Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I've called every game of the girls' and boys' 8th region tourneys to date. The 6th region refs have been disappointing, to say the least. I hear a lot of complaining about 8th Region refs - but I feel the better 8th Region refs have done better than what I've seen from the 6th Region refs so far. Consistency has been very bad...in the SK-Shelby game Friday night, fewer than 10 total fouls were called in the first half - but the second half produced well over 20! And in no way was the second half any more physical than the second. The non-charge call on Blevins was bad...but the 6th refs seem reluctant to call charges. We've seen only a couple called in the 10 (boys and girls) games we've seen to date. Another call - even more horrible IMO because it was so very blatant and not the slam-bang play that a charge/block call is - was during the WV-Anderson game, when a WV guard drove down the lane between two defenders and was tripped, sprawling out of bounds. The official - directly in front of the play with an unobscured view - ruled a turnover and gave the ball to Anderson. A simple call, unbelievably blown. Honestly, I don't want to pile too much on the refs, though - they have a tough, tough job, and each region develops its own tolerances and "standards", if you will. But I do believe the 8th refs I've seen this year have been more consistently good. INTERESTING OBSERVATION: Has anyone noticed that there have been a lot of instances of the officials getting in the way of a play during the girls' 8th region? In 30+ years of broadcasting HS basketball, I can't recall a single instance of this happening, but it has happened several times in this year's 8th region girls' tournament... Semi-final notes CincySportsFan - so great to meet you tonight, even though we didn't get a chance to speak. Hope to see you again Saturday night...maybe we can talk before the broadcast. (I go "on air" at 6:30 pm) Shelby vs. SK - The better passing team won. Shelby fell in large part to the same reason they have had such an up-and-down season; they are inconsistent. They shot the perimeter shot very well vs. South Oldham and survived; against SK, they got some of the same open looks, but couldn't knock them down. Hated to see the Wells girl go down early in the 2nd, but kudos to the Lady Rockets for not folding. I really don't think Shelby was going to win this game, but it undoubtedly would have been a lot closer; Wells was dominating the glass at that point. SK with a 9 point lead heading into the fourth... Hat's off to both teams for extraordinary FT shooting as both teams topped 70% at the line (Shelby around 77%!!) Neither team has exactly set the world on fire at the line this year, but both were stellar tonight. SK practically camped out on the line in the 4Q and put the game away there as Shelby finally ran out of steam. More kudos to Nikki Brown, who did a fantastic job of working the inside, getting in scoring position, and when she got the ball, she finished on the inside. Great night for her - and when Wells went out, Brown absolutely took over the backboards. Double-double for her tonight. WV - Anderson - Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Story of the game for W-V, along with an extraordinary number of missed shots from point-blank range. Keep the turnovers down or make a few of those close-in shots and W-V is in the finals. Slavey was awesome in the fourth, rallying her team from a deficit to take a 35-30 lead as she hit 3 threes in the fourth (four for the game). But with the 35-30 lead, W-V committed back-to-back turnovers, and AC converted baskets on both to pull to within 35-34. A Slavey three made it 38-34, but 8 straight AC points made it 42-38. WV cut it to 42-40, but missed a golden opportunity with 15 seconds left and AC with the ball out of bounds. The pass in came to sophomore center Brown, who is a 50% FT shooter. Two WV defenders standing around her didn't foul, and Brown passed into front court to senior guard Kara Yeaste, an 80+% FT shooter. Precious seconds passed before WV fouled Yeaste. In a 1 and 1 situation, instead of having a 50% FT shooter at the line and about 12-14 seconds left, WV instead had Yeaste at the line and only 9 seconds left. Yeast hit two free throws to effectively seal the victory. (Eriel McKee later hit two FTs with about 2 seconds left after stealing the ball at midcourt for the final margin.) W-V had a marvelous year this year and should make another run next year. Loved the way Dixon and Sandlin kept battling, despite their shooting struggles. Ginn hustled all night and led the team in rebounding... Slavey's three point shooting was magnificent. I thought Judy was impressive on the glass when she came off the bench. Meanwhile, hat's off to an unbelievably young Anderson squad - two 8th graders start, along with a sophomore and a junior. For the first time, AC's youngsters were faced with a daunting situation in a must-win region tournament game. They showed remarkable poise - which means Anderson may be getting ready for a 2-3 year run of incredible teams. McKee was the killer tonight, although Brown hit two driving layups late that were nails in the coffin. Tony Kays is doing a fantastic job with this bunch. This was a wildly entertaining game in front of a full house; it was everything HS basketball should be, between two teams playing their hearts out. My congratulations to both teams and coaches.
paNDA Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Remember the good times Walton Verona and prepare for next year. You should have a great team.
Ranger Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I thought the WV coaches were going to foul Brown they were yelling so loud. It was almost bizzare; the play happened right in front of the WV bench not once but twice. The coaches are yelling at the top of their lungs to foul and the players just stood with their hands up. They actually almost looked to let Brown catch the ball; not sure what happened. Just a couple of plays though and the way WV got back into this was awesome. Very impressed with the youth and the coaching.
The sarge Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Great season for the girls with even better times ahead for them!
