Word going around Cooper is they will scrimmage CCH this season. This should be a great test for Cooper! I was at equipment handout the other day, looks like they have some new kids !

Why not? Cooper is starting to get their pieces of the pie from Boone/Conner/Ryle. They will have a decent team here soon. NKY will weaken as a whole but we will have years where 2 of the teams are good and 2 aren't. Teams will have their runs...

All I am saying is if CovCath wants to win or contend for a state championship they might want scrimmage a top team in the state. If they think that is how you get to the top, more power to them.:banana:

A lot of times it depends on what you have returning when it comes to who you scrimmage. I think that CCH will have a new starting qb this year and will be looking at quite a few others to be first time starters. This will allow them to get their "feet wet" and allow the coaches to get a good feel for how they will do and they will be able to make good evaluations of their players in game like situations.

 

Cooper by no means will not be a push over. It will be a good scrimmage to prepare teams for the upcoming season.

 

Now if CCH had a ton of returning talent then they would probably look elsewhere.

Sort of. I think there's a little more thinking involving scrimmage opponents than "a scrimmage is a scrimmage". If CovCath is playing in Week Zero (which means they only get one scrimmage) and if they have a very tough opponents in Week Zero, then the quality of scrimmage opponent means more if winning the first game is important. On the other hand, if CovCath doesn't play in Week Zero and has a second scrimmage and their first week opponent isn't real strong, then whether Cooper is a quality scrimmage opponent is somewhat irrelevant.

Perhaps Cooper runs an O or D that they need to get experience with before a particular game? There has to be a rational behind it.

From what I've seen, Cov Cath has never had as much pre-season "scheming" as some of the other teams in the state - good or bad. We haven't had made much of a deal of scrimmaging the same team year after year, or of particularly making a huge effort to scrimmage the biggest and best teams. If memory serves, in my four years there in the 90's, we played week zero games all four years, and scrimmaged three different teams in the four years - including relatively weak teams from Campbell County and Shelby County (no offense intended).

 

Through most of the 90's we played week zero games against Boone County or Ryle because in that era, those were good strong games played in the August heat and they really made Cov Cath put their conditioning to the test, right off the bat. Then in '97 or '98 we moved into playing GCL and Ohio teams in week zero (which I wasn't ever a huge proponent of), and we've continued to schedule as such ever since.

 

I think it may be likely that, depending on which team Coach Wirth schedules in week zero, Cov Cath is looking for a somewhat challenging, but not backbreaking scrimmage for the week previous to taking on one (or two) of the Ohio programs in their first three games - in other words, they don't want the scrimmage to be a cake walk, but they definitely want to go into it as the better team.

 

Wirth is yet to release the official schedule, but as I understand it, LaSalle is going to be scheduled in week two. I've also been told that Wirth is trying to put Cov Cath back into the mix for the Bluegrass Bowl. If you'll recall, they had an upset victory over Louisville St. X in '99.
