Mark Story says so. He makes some really good points.

Among the many things Rick Pitino got right during his tenure as Kentucky basketball coach was how to handle Senior Day for departing non-seniors.

You'll recall that in 1993 with Jamal Mashburn and again in 1997 for Ron Mercer, Pitino and Kentucky recognized star players turning pro early with post-game ceremonies following the last regular-season home contest.

These were separate from UK's traditional pre-game Senior Day recognition for players who are, well, seniors.

Says here that's exactly the way to handle such scenarios.

I absolutely love Patterson, but agree with Story that he should get a post game send off and not include him in pregame Senior Day activities.

If you include him, where do you draw the line? Do you include freshmen who are going to be one and dones? Doing so diminishes the honor reserved for seniors, IMO.

^That may be the only acceptable exception to the rule for me.

Is Patterson definitely graduating this spring? I've heard lots of talk about that but I have no idea if he is indeed on schedule to do so.

If you use the turn "Senior" to mean after four or more years of College, then I guess he shouldn't but if you use the required Hours to graduate (to be a sophomore you need 30 hours, junior 60 hours and senior 90 hours) then he is indeed a senior and will graduate this year.

I have a friend and a young man who is on BGP's who will graduate in three years from UK, should he not be allowed to received his degree during graduation ceremonies because he wasn't at UK the entire four years?

I think Patterson deserves the opportunity as I did when Mash was recognized. I forgot about Mercer, and while having nothing against him, don't feel he was really worthy of this. I think it should be a very, very elite group that this happens for. Case by case basis. Patterson gets a "yes" in my book though.

Senior Day is for seniors only. Period.

I certainly feel there should be some sort of Patterson simply because of his accomplishment in graduating early. Not because he's going on to the NBA, nor for any other player that may/may not go to the NBA. First of all, you can't count your chickens before they hatch. We all know Wall is a done deal, but what about players like Blesoe. Do you include them or not? Why do we want to celebrate one and done... not that I'm not thankful WE got those types of players for a year. (I personally believe in different rules, but that's another issue)

If a player is drafted and decides to leave early, some sort of celebration can be held then. Not in conjunction with the season in any way.

Patterson.... deserves recognition, but separate from those moments that are reserved for the specialness of just being a senior.

So my young friend who is graduating in three years should not be part of the cermonies because, well he isn't a senior? No, he did what was required by the University to do so he is indeed a senior!

BTW how many students who have been at UK for four years and are not still Seniors (meaning enough credit hours to be seniors)?

Masburn or Mercer weren't graduating. I think in a unique situation such as Patterson's where he is set to graduate from the University an exception should be made.

I agree. Great point. :thumb:

If Patterson has completed his course work and will graduate in May, then he is a senior by university standards.

If we let 5th year seniors participate, why not 3rd year seniors?

I also agree. Patterson may be a Jr. in basketball, but in the classroom he is a Sr. Very much deserves to have a special moment in Rupp.

If he's graduating I have no problem with it at all. Not sure I'd like it if they included freshmen though.

I agree. I will add that I wouldn't have a problem honoring PP anyways even if he wasn't graduating.

Let's say he wasn't graduating, he has given a lot to this program and deserves to be honored by the University and fans. Senior day is to give those players that honor and I'm sorry but three years of PP deserves more recognition than four years of Stevenson, Harris and Krebs.

So you're saying a player deserves more recognition becuase he's a better player? Haven't Harris and Stevenson given just as much to the university?
