Region 9 went threw the same ranting last year when they shifted the games to the Bank of Kentucky Center at NKU. But I know one thing - I didn't attend any regional games for several years because of too little parking, cramming into bleacher seats in an overcrowded gym, having to empty the gym between games to make sure all each teams fans could get in, not even thinking about going to the concession stand and waiting for who knows how long and then worrying if my seat would still be there when I went back, etc. I went to the regional last year because it was at the BOK and I LOVED it! See...there are two sides to every story.

I agree on the prices that the arenas charge. It needs to be adjusted for high school games. But I like the idea of playing regional tournaments in "Arenas" on their way to Rupp. MSU, WKU, EKU, Murray, BOK, etc. are great venues for regional tourneys. Only 16 teams get the experience of playing in Rupp Arena, but if all regionals were played in arenas 128 teams would get the experience. Everyone gets to play in a high school gym during the season, but the experience to run out of the locker room onto that arena floor is awesome even for the end of the bench player that never gets to see action. I am 50 years old and I can still remember playing University Breckinridge on Morehead State University's floor. Awesome!

 

I watched Breck and Rowan County battle a couple of times there. That was one hot rivalry.

I loved watching the game at the arena tonight. Great atmosphere! Mustard does not cost extra !! haha

Since you think what the radio stations have to pay is fair, Baio, why don't you pay me $50.00 and I'll allow you to come to my house and mow my yard, I'll provide the lawn mower and gas, AND I'll have you some grapes, apples, and fountain drinks for you when you get done. Is that fair? That's the same deal as this since they are both public services.

 

By the way, I've heard The Arena is going to start charging people $2.00 just for driving by and having it in their view on their way to the movies or Applebee's.

 

 

So the radio stations don't run ads during the timeouts and halftime? If it was a public service they'd be doing it for free. If they sell ads it is not a public service--its a business trying to make money.

I'm trying to decide what to do. We've already missed the Lady Bear's first round game. I'd like to go support Harlan County's boys tomorrow night. Here's my break down of expenses:

We're looking at $100 to go watch one high school regional basketball game, where we may or may not have good seats. Hopefully the boys will win and the girls already have won their first round, so that's 2 maybe 3 more games. If we make it to the rest of the games we're talking about a car payment here to go watch the regional tournament. I'd like to go support our team, but Geez! I went to the regional tournament in Bell last year and had to park on the highway and stand in line to buy tickets. No problem. I sat with the fans from our school, sweated it out up in the top section, and had a blast. It felt like a regional tournament should.

 

From my own personal experience, there's nothing more exhilerating than running into a packed gym with screeming fans and there's nothing more deflating than running into a large gym that is sparsely filled. The verdict's still out for me, but I'm not hearing good things about the Arena. We do enjoy listening to our local radio coverage.

Since North Laurel is the host, you'd have to drive anyway so that's not really a valid argument. But according mapquest it is 64 miles from Harlan to Corbin so that's 124 miles round trip. At 25 mpg that would be 5 gallons and more like $12.50 so that's another $7 less.

 

The after game meal is going to be the same no matter if it is at the arena or not so again, not a very good point.

Secondly, the radio stations asked at the beginning of the year if there would be a cost for covering the regional tournament and it was said there would be a connection/hookup fee and that was agreed upon. Then, three days before the Girls Draw, everyone gets an e-mail stating there would be $100 broadcast fee per tournament, $100 banner fee per tournament (just to hang your banner up), and a connection fee for a grand total of $500.00. After all that, it would have been reasonable if the radio stations were given time to package the Regional Tournament separate from regular season coverage. But 3 days???? That's a day late and a dollar short.

 

The REAL story is they didn't sell half as many VIP/Reserved/Sponsor Seats as they hoped so they in turn decided to hand over the cost and responsibility to the radio stations to make their money back. That is simply bad organization, especially when the cost information was asked for before the season ever started.

 

So you can make excuses for the Arena, you can try to cover up the wounds, but the bottom line is all of the points from the start of this thread is legitimate, and you all know it is true.

 

Once again I say, I'm not saying I hate the Arena, want to boycott the Arena, or anything like that. I'm just saying there are obvious falacies and ALL of us should be adult enough to agree that is the case and move on to a great Regional Tournament.

I am jealous. The radio station that was covering North and South Laurel fired all the sports guys (and I use that term loosely) and there is no coverage of either team any longer.

Man, there are some misinformed people on here! It appears that a certain bunch have some sort of axe to grind. Let me start this by saying that my original view was against having it at the arena. I have since reconsidered. I'd say the 1800 or so people that were coming for the second game were pretty happy to be inside watching rather than standing outside in the cold waiting for that 4OT game to be over.

 

As for the concessions, I thought the cost was about the same asmost high schools I've been to. I bought a popcorn and a pop, and it was 3.50. If that is too much, please tell me what your school charges, and we'll debate as to whether or not the price difference is significant. The statement about charging for mustard is an out and out lie.

Complaints about travel time and cost have no merit. Some travel more, some less. The fact of the matter is that Corbin is pretty centrally located for the 13th region. If you don't like that, petition the KHSAA for a change in regions.

First of all, if you think there were one thousand people there Monday Night, you must have been watching Big Monday on ESPN instead of the Pineville vs. North Laurel or Harlan Co. vs. Whitley Co. games at The Arena. So, yes all of those kids got the "experience" of a lifetime playing in front of 8,000 empty seats. I'm sure the kids from Pineville and Whitley Co. will NEVER forget it. It was life changing I'm sure. I got the same feeling I did in 1996 when i walked into the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, NJ for Kentucky and UMASS in the Final Four. Chill bumps came up all over me and I could feel the screaming fans from all corners. I'm sure the kids from Pineville and Whitley Co. felt it too, just ask them. Also, for your information, there's nothing wrong with my eyes, maybe my binoculars that I was looking through trying to find my family in Row Z.

 

Secondly, as far as ticket prices, there HAVE NEVER been split sessions for first round girls games at the high school venues. I have been covering Regional Tournaments probably since you (Scott Baio) wa a big hit on "Charles in Charge" so I think I'd trust my judgment over yours. Therefore, Monday through Thursday, people would be paying four or five dollars at the high schools compared to nine, ten, or a hundred (if you bought concessions) at the Arena. Not to mention, if your wife and kids were with you (if you have any), you were out a minimum of $32.00 like I said in the previous post (and that's in the corners of the Arena where you probably have to bring a portable telescope to see the score let alone the game.

 

Third, about the hospitality, the only thing I was "reaching" for is something to carry all the grapes, bananas, and apples I could possibly carry out of there from the City of Corbin. I wanted to make sure if I was going to have to eat Corbin's "freshly grown fruit", I was going to wipe them out so maybe they could afford some peanuts and possbily pretzels for the next night (even though I know that's stretching it a bit, Rold Gold pretzels are getting pricy these days). I think people who leave work and then drive to cover a double header should at least be given finger sandwiches and not just "the finger" by making them eat grapes, apples, and oh yeah let's not forget "wrapped grapefruit". Come on, people working for "their kids and their communities" should be treated a little better than that Baio. I think we should put "Charles in Charge" of the media hospitality room next year. On a side note, since you said I was really "reaching hear", maybe you should learn that it's "here" and not "hear" because obviously, there's something wrong with your grammar, or maybe even your "HEAR-ing"? Who knows?

 

Fourth, kids are going to remember the success or failure they had at the Regional Tournament, not where it was held. I mean, what kid from Pineville is going to go to a "Carrie Underwood" concert at the Arena in a couple of months and talk to their friends about what an exhilerating experience it was to play on that floor and get beat 73-46 by North Laurel in front of a packed house that was going nuts Monday Night at the Arena?

 

Finally, you're telling me that the Printing Company thought it was the Harlan Co. Green Dragons. OK, well maybe when the Tournament is back at the high schools in a few years, that the same printing company will think Scott baio is still popular and put him on the cover as a marketing strategy. Do you think that will work? Come on, you know the printing company printed the info they were given, it was NL's fault. They turned in the wrong info, probably because they wanted to Word Filter ViolationWord Filter ViolationWord Filter ViolationWord Filter Violation Harlan Co. off for wanting to have it in their "State of the Art" facility that's recently been committed. I guess that's a crime too isn't it?

I went to the game tonight, the atmosphere was as good as any regional tournament that I have attended. And......get this.....I was 2 rows from the back row in section 106 and could see perfect, I could even read the team names and numbers on jerseys without binoculars or telescopes!! Unreal! Didn't even feel as though I was going to have a nose bleed. No long lines for a restroom.

 

When we arrived about 6:10 pm it was a breeze getting up the hill, had parking lot attendants directing me to where available spots were and, had attendants directing me to the proper door to enter. There was a couple of people that even got the information needed to purchase tickets BEFORE attempting entry into the wrong door.

 

I also got a little thirsty and went to the concession stand and got a 16 oz. pepsi and a popcorn which was larger than the average size bag found at most gyms and it came in an easy to handle cup intead of a bag:popcorn: and I didn't even have to pawn anything to purchase this, let alone sell my house :confused:.....I think it was $4.00 could have been $4.50, I paid with a 5 and got change back. Yeah if the game was held at a hot and cramped highschool gym I could have saved probably 50 cents on the concessions maybe $1 on admission. I even had enough cash left over to stop at the bottom of the hill and have a couple of brews and some food at Applebees along with a few Bell Co. fans.

 

I never got kneed in the back, elbowed in the side or had some fat guys butt in my face going down the isle.

 

The city of Corbin nor Corbin High School had anything to do with the operation of this tournament. With that said, the Arena had nothing to do with the programs nor the hospitality room should not be blamed on either as they had nothing to do with either.

 

Paying broadcasting right fees does not entitle you to free food. I would be willing to bet anything that your radio station made a LOT more money from advertisers than they paid to broadcast the tournament. Besides, the press and the referees are the only people getting paid (other than arena staff). Buy your own food!

 

Highway 119 is a terrible road to drive, that 30 or so mile stretch of road between Pineville and Harlan is one of the worst drives you can make. 25 is an interstate compared to 119. I have traveled 119 5 times in the past 2 years and have witnessed or been held up in traffic 4 of the 5 times due to a serious accident. Coincidence? Maybe....but??....

BUT, why do you state SO MANY FALACIES before this statement? The view? The concessions? The hospitality room? Even the atmosphere.....Please explain your earlier statements that we know are absolutley FALSE. You stated that they charged fifty cents for mustard when there is a 1 gallon jug available that you could probably walk out the front door with if you wanted.

 

After reading your statement earlier today I even stood in all 4 corners (the furthest point from the floor) and could see perfect.
