Would a speeding ticket be "involved?"

DUI?

I should have been more specific and not have spoken in such general terms.

Speeding ticket should have no impact IMHO. DUI, ... I have mixed emotions on that one. Corporate fraud at the level of a felony should prevent someone from receiving assistance.

There are TONS of specific violations of the law, which we don't have time to list on here, .... some much more serious than others. Illegal use of drugs & felony level fraud would be 2 examples IMHO which should keep someone from receiving government assistance. Not enough time to list all the various violations of the law and whether they should or should not disqualify someone from government assistance (which is OUR money that our elected officials have been chosen to distribute). This thread was specific to drug testing and I say 100% that a failed drug test should result in no government assistance.

I don't even want it for layoffs. People are too freaking spoiled and pampered these days. If you get laid off, you can still find A job.

Will it necessarily be the job you want?

Maybe not.

Could it possibly require lifestyle changes?

Very well could.

BUT, what it's not, is a drain on people who do go out and work every day. And it's a check, so you should take what you can get at first and try to improve yourself later. I've always been told and have found it to be true, that it's easier to find a job when you have one.

My wife has worked her entire life. She has been with her current employer for over 10 years. Her job is about to be shipped to India along with many others. Until she finds something, she should qualify for unemployment insurance. She is going to lose her job due to no fault of her own and will be looking for another job when that happens. I have no problem helping people in these situations. I am very conservative, but she is not a drain on the taxpayer. She has been one since she was 16 years old. She has not been 'too freaking spoiled and pampered' as you put it. She will find something else, I have no doubt. But that is what the program was set up for, ... not for those who have no intention of working.

I don't want to make this personal, but you bring up a good point. Generally when someone is laid off they know in advance that it will happen. You can use that time to locate another job. And if a satisfactory one cannot be found, then said person can locate ANY job until a satisfactory one can be found.

Recently I've seen gas stations, fast food places, and a couple of coffee places looking for employment. I doubt any of those require experience or a college degree. Also, right now there are TONS of jobs open for the 2010census. The company I work for seems to hire someone new in the call center every week. Is it a great job? From what I've seen, probably not. But it has great insurance and gives you at minimum $10/hr. It can do as a temporary fix until something more permanent can be found.

I'm sorry, and I hope you don't take it personal, but A job can be found almost immediately for any situation. That's where the pampered part of my argument comes into play. WAY too many people on UI seem to think they have to find a "replacement" job, so they draw UI until that can be found. I want people to go out and find ANY job and look for a "replacement" job while doing so.

There was a time in this country when people were self-reliant, or as FB alluded to (maybe in another thread) their neighbors and/or family helped them out. It would be nice to go back to that.

Instead we have people on UI wasting their time standing outside of Senator Bunning's office when they COULD be working. I saw the pictures of the people and everyone of them looked FULLY capable of being able to sand a wall to prep it for painting. My brother owns his own painting company and will start ANYONE out on $8/hr doing just that. You don't have to pass a drug test, have any qualifications, etc. Just show up on time every day and work hard. We have made it to easy on people to rely on the gov't to get them through the hard times.

Now MT, I don't know you or your wife and this isn't personal at all. Just my take on UI in general and why I think a total elimination is needed.

I know how. I just know it won't happen.

How we do it is...just flat out end it. As of 30 days from now (see I have a heart) nobody in this country will receive UI.

 Not under this administration. :bunny:

All I will say is .

Come to an area whose entire industries have been gutted to the tune of 19 % unemployment and point those jobs out to me, please.

Of course they could move. But how do you move without the means to pay for resettling your lives somewhere else (first and last rent, downpayment, sell a house where there is high unemployment, etc.)? How do you find a living wage job when your skill set has been outsourced to another country?

Your premise is good in theory IMO but the reality in many areas is very different.

And thus...the reasons that many other ideas have failed...ie Marxism and Socialism.

I'm asking this because I only know firsthand where I live and my hometown. But there aren't any fast food places, gas stations, department stores, etc. hiring where you live?

And as for not being a living wage job. Well, you may have to find two of them. At one time I had a full time job and two part times so I was essentially working two full time jobs. It sucked, but I had plenty of money and stayed busy.

Actually I just noticed that your location says Martinsville, VA. I just checked...McDonald's is hiring for a regular crew member there:

And with 19% unemployment of a county of 50,000, any idea what happens when the ONE position is filled? What do the others do? We only have three McDonalds around here. When you have people on unemployment and/or making significantly less than before, there aren't that many restaurants that stay in business to employ the people. Same goes for stores. When we moved here in 2000 our mall had FYE, Waldens, about 4 jewelers, KAY-BEE Toys, Goodys, among other retaliers. Those places are all empty now as those companies that employed local people at small wages are gone.

BTW, that advertisement is old. There is no longer a McDonald's in our Walmart.

As to holding jobs, you don't have to tell me:

When I went through School I:

Worked at the Radio Station

Put in 40 hours a week during the summer at Centre College on Paint/Maintenance Crew

Pastored a small church for $75 per week.

Lived at home (except during school)

First 2 years married I:

Pastored a slightly larger church

Worked at the Radio Station

Teacher Substitute as often as I could

BTW, that was in the '80's.

Again, it's situational. Come down here and see what I mean. I'm no defender of unlimited unemployment but I do know when the jobs that used to drive blue collar America are gone, it's not as easy as you seem to speak.

I disagree with this on a lot of levels. The economy is cyclical in a sense, there are going to be dives and climbs. Encouraging those who lose their jobs to sell all they own, take a low-level job and scrape by only ensures the longevity of the dives. The more people who do this, the less people there are to buy goods and services, the less employers need higher-level positions, and, most importantly, the more people scrapping for resources at the bottom. In essence, it's a prescription for misery. It's not very hard to look back at other countries who have experienced market liberalization without social safety nets such as unemployment insurance to bear this out. Thailand, for instance, experienced high growth in the 90s then a massive and prolonged economic drought very much fueled by the scenario you are describing.

I also think you are nostalgic for a time that never existed. There might be a stigma that people were friendlier and more giving at some time in the past, but it's a portrait of a utopia that glosses over the deficiencies of those times.

Now, if you advocate the abolition of unemployment because you wish for a minuscule government or anarchic society, then I can't argue with your personal preferences, but as far as something that will benefit the most people I think you're wrong. Unemployment insurance in this country is temporary, designed to tide people over until they are employed again, and I think it works fairly well.

Read yesterday that approximately only 46% of people who are out of work qualify for UI. Thought that was interesting.

I didn't take your post personally. I just disagree. I do agree that the system is abused, but there are situations where UI is appropriate. If only those situations were paid for, we wouldn't have the issues we have.

I use my wife as an example. Sure she is going to look, but after having worked her way up for the past 10 & 1/2 years, starting over in her 40's is more difficult than when she was in her 20's. I don't think eliminating it is the right thing to do, but we have to clean up all the abuses in the system, and there are plenty.

I am a conservative, but agree with you on this issue. I think we have to clean up the government waste in many programs, but totally eliminating UI will not fix the problem. You are dead right on the impact on the economy. It would not be good. But I think that we really should be tightening up on our government's spending which is completely out of control.

I disagree that someone is nostalgic for a time that never existed. There was a time when you worked or you didn't eat. There was no UI. But there also was a time when people didn't have electricity, phones, cars, etc. The world has changed drastically over the past 100 years and I don't see anyway of going back. And in many situations, we do have it much better than 100 years ago.

One thing I have seen/heard in EKy is people selling their food stamps. They usually buy pop and sell it at a reduced price, but they'll also sell meat products or anything to get quick cash. Their main goal is to get money to buy drugs. Let grandpa or friends feed and worry about their kids. That little problem won't faze them. They need to feed their own problem and that's the only thing that is important to them.

This is a big problem in EKy, I don't know about other parts of the state. I've also have heard of fuel vouchers, baby formula, and other government benifits being manipulated for cash. It's really a shame.

I don't know if drug testing would work, but if it could be economically feasible to do it, it wouldn't hurt giving it a try. Drugged up people selling food stamp cards don't need to be receiving food stamps, or any other program for that matter.
