February 26, 201016 yr I'm guessing you're asking why Catholics abstain from "meat" and not fish during Lent . One reason, I think, is "meat" was rich man's food and was associated with celebration. Fish could be acquired easily by fishing so even the poor could get it. During Fridays in Lent, we pay extra attention to the Sacrifice of the Cross - which occurred on a Friday. So on Friday we abstain from celebration which was associated with meat in the days the practice developed. Also fasting from meat, the way I view it, means fasting from warm blooded animals. So fish are good to go.

February 26, 201016 yr I think it's a pretty easy explanation. Before becoming disciples of Jesus the apostles were fisherman. It's a scam. Jesus, was just looking out for the apostles interest. The might of retired from fishing, but just think of the effect that this new law had on their 401k's which were mostly company stock from the old job.
February 27, 201016 yr I've been told by Catholics that the reason fish is allowed is because Catholics controlled the meat industry and they wanted it to stay profitable so fish would not be considered meat.

February 27, 201016 yr Technically speaking there is no such thing as warm-blooded and cold-blooded animals.
February 27, 201016 yr The best explanation I've seen is this: The distinction between fish and meat comes from the Middle Ages and shows the Church’s preferential option for the poor. The rich could afford to vary their diet quite a bit more than the poor could with beef, mutton and pork. Among the poor, such variety was a rarity, while an extremely common dish was fish. Since anybody with a net could catch fish, the poor subsisted on it. In its Lenten regulations, the Church essentially put the onus on the rich to abstain from meat while not impinging on the (already Lenten) diet of the poor any further. I don't know who wrote the above. Biblical quote that fits: "Those to whom much is given, much will be required."
February 27, 201016 yr No whale on Fridays??? :lol:Yeah, but there's no reason to blubber about it.
