Demarcus Cousins and his meds hurting draft stock?

Featured Replies

Bledsoe would have to be as good as Ty Lawson long before he could ever be considered better than him, IMO... He has potential, but he'd have to be a lot more consistent.

Bledsoe IMO would be like getting a better Ty Lawson. He has Lawson's speed, with a much stronger body, better ability to get to the basket, and slightly better athleticism. NBA teams would draft him just on that, and with the thought he is forced into a role this season he is not used to.

It's very safe to say this particular scout was extremely well versed on Ty Lawson's game, and he didn't think Bledsoe was anywhere close to that level yet...

Wow. This guy is making some dangerous allegations here. To use hearsay "I hear he is on big time meds", quote certain things as fact when no proof was ever presented that he punched anyone, talk about off court issues when to my knowledge there have been none, is treading on thin ice IMHO.

Now, if you say 'Has demonstrated a lack of emotional control at times', no one could dispute that, ... but these are pretty serious allegations to be putting on a kid.

I think Cousins has grounds for a lawsuit and I would not blame him because it may effect his future earnings potential with this article putting out false accusations.

Have you watched Lawson this year? IMO, Bledsoe has along way to go before he could be compared to him. Lawson is a player and a key guy on a contender. Bledsoe is way to sloppy for my taste as an NBA PG. JMO though.

Not exactly the same, but I view him similarly to Kevin Love. Not great athletes, but extremely gifted in other areas. Boogie is a 15' jumper away from being really darn good, which is what the NBA people will see. It is difficult to find a good big man in the NBA.

I can kind of see the Love comparison, but to me Cousins has an infinitely higher ceiling. I think Cousins has the talent to be a consistent all-star on the NBA level something that I can't see Love doing, though he is doing well in the NBA. Once again, JMO.

I was thinking about that. I'm going to get Spikes on it, it can be his first case.:thumb:

Meds or no meds he is the best big man in the country. IMO

Why would they draft Bledsoe that high and not draft someone like Jodie Meeks, who was a much better player, until the second round. Maybe the same reason the Pistons drafted Darko instead of Melo or Wade. Potential?:idunno:

I never said where he would get drafted but just why he would get drafted. IMO he is no where close to being a 1st rounder this year.

I agree, and although my post sounds terrible, I really didn't mean he was better than Lawson now, that's the reason I used "would" instead. A better comparison would be to compare Lawson's frosh season to Bledsoe's. IMO if Bledsoe stayed in college for as long as Lawson did, then he would be the better player of the two, as of right now, hes not close, but "would" or "could" be the same type of player, and that is what NBA teams are interested in.

A lot of what I said above can be applied here, but although my first post sounded like I was giving Bledsoe all the glory, I was merely just looking ahead. No where in my mind do I think Bledsoe is as good as Lawson right now. BUT, I do believe he will be a better player than Lawson. One of the things that made Lawson so good was that he was so lightning quick with the ball, so is Bledsoe. However, Bledsoe has more aspects to him than Lawson does, like superior strength, leaping ability. BUT, Lawson, at this point has more aspects to his game, such as awareness, sustainability, consistency, etc. which makes him a better player. Give Bledsoe time to develop the way Lawson had time to develop, and I think he latches on to those things, and becomes a better player. Whether he develops in college or the pro's.

All I was basically trying to say is Bledsoe has the potential to be a great player in the mold of a Ty Lawson (short pg, who is lightning quick, and has athleticism to make up for it, plays big.) Although hes not as good as Lawson right now, the potential to be is there. He has been forced into a position of playing off the ball and that is something he is not used to. We all know the NBA draft's on potential, thus my statement.

So before I take anymore, Bledose will not get drafted in the first round (if he does it will be late), and Bledsoe is not as good as Ty Lawson "right now", although IMO he will be better, and both will be the same type of player.

I spent a long time last night talking to a NBA scout and nothing like this was ever mentioned. He did have concerns about his athleticism and attitude issues, but said he would certainly be taken in the top 5. He was actually much more critical of Patterson and said he could see him sliding to the middle to back of the 1st round...

What was the criticism of Patterson?

What was the criticism of Patterson?

Mostly that the guy didn't feel he had the game to compete with 4s at the NBA level on either end of the court. Undersized, not an elite athlete, feet are a bit slow at times, slightly above average college defender. Basically the same knocks that have been there on him minus showing that he can now knock down a jumper...

I don't understand the athleticism concerns with Cousins. I know he doesn't jump extremely high, but he doesn't really have to. And hes made some unbelievable athletic plays this year. I am shocked with how good his footwork is. To me the concern with him should have nothing to do with his athleticism.

I wondered about the athleticism. I've seen Patterson miss several dunks this season because he simply didn't get the elevation. He missed one last night, one (maybe two) in the Vandy game, and I know of one earlier in the year on a breakout. That would be a big concern for me if I was considering drafting him as high as some of the projections.

The scout was amazed at his feel for positioning on the glass. Even said he could become a Rodman like rebounder in his career. I don't think the concerns about his athleticism will slow him down much, but as a scout there is a reason to at least be aware of it. He's simply not going to block a bunch of shots in the NBA, and he isn't going to give you a great second jump in the paint...

1. The NBA game is all about athleticism.

2. When you scout a guy to be picked that high, you tear them apart.

The concern about Cousins' athleticism are valid. But, I also think his combination of size, hands, footwork, etc. are more than enough to offset it. I think the comparisons to Kevin Love have some merit. But Cousins, IMO, has a much bigger upside. For starters, even though people question his athleticism, I think he's better than Love in that regard. I like his offensive game in the post better than Love's as well. Simply put, while there are some similarities, I think Cousins is just better than Love as a post player and has a higher ceiling.

There are very few guys coming into the NBA draft that don't have a weakness. Cousins is still viewed as a top 5 pick, so that should tell us something about how much weight the athleticism argument carries.

I think that Boogie can develop a lot more explosiveness than he currently has if he will dedicate himself to the weightroom and working out. IMO if Cousins had the same training as PPat and Orton did last summer in Cali he would be a lot than he is now.

IMO...this thread shouldnt even be on here. Its fine to talk about a players performance and abilities but discussing the kids medications and related issues should only be discussed by the kid and his parents, doctors and potential NBA team during his private evaluation. Would any of us want our kids' medical info discussed publicly?

I agree Cousins isn't a great athlete, but throughout the NBA's history how many great athletes have played center? Shaq (in his younger days), D Howard, Wilt, Bill Russell?

Not comparing Cousins to Patrick Ewing or Tim Duncan but I wouldn't call either of those two great athletes and they're both top 50 all-time NBAers. I don't how much stock I put into saying Cousins isn't a great athlete.
