February 19, 201016 yr Why should I ? What have I done? I fit into my space. Why are we afraid to tell the person "we understand you have the right to gorge yourself and not do any exercise but you do not have the right to have your fat hanging over onto my seat?" How far do we take this? What if they weigh 450 pounds? 750? Do we just say "well, he's fat but I don't want to hurt his feelings?" Not me. If you're fat you deal with the repercussions. If you can't handle it, lose weight. That's offensive.
February 19, 201016 yr At the risk of losing my posting rights again as a person who has struggled for his whole life with his weight I have found your entire superior attitude regarding overweight people (if we're going to encourage PC then get off calling us fat) to be offensive. You will likely retort that it would apply to anyone who invades your precious space but I strongly doubt that you would have been as harsh in your descriptions of a person who simply puts his or her arm on the rest to far for your liking if that person was a body builder. Right or wrong I have found the way you have talked about overweight people in this thread to be crude and crass just like the teen age slugs who thought they had some sore of right to judge me because of my weight. I'm no longer overweight but I'm still very sensitive to the treatment of overweight people.

I'm no longer overweight but I'm still very sensitive to the treatment of overweight people. I'm 5'11 215 so I'm far from thin. I don't have a lot of sympathy for fat people . I don't expect people to look at me and say "aww, he's 30 pounds overweight. Lets give him a break." I drank the MT Dew and ate the chips and dip to get to the 215 pounds. I'll live with the drawbacks. I understand that people might not like the way I described the fat folk but it was done to make a point. I don't think that others should suffer because of the lack of will power of most fat people. Its really that simple. The majority of fat people that get on an airplane and struggle fit into their space get what they deserve. If you're going to be embarrassed because SWA doesn't let you have a seat a)you have no one to blame but you b)you can lose weight or c)don't fly. You might not like my approach but I doubt you disagree. If you do disagree then IMO you're in the vast minority. One last thing: We all judge people everyday. Everyone of us. So don't cry about people judging you when you were overweight. We're all guilty of judging people. Congratulations on losing your weight.
February 19, 201016 yr I agree with Clyde on this one...(Never thought I'd say that) Seriously, if you're too fat to fit into a seat, you have two options. 1) Buy 2 seats and make sure you get on that flight. 2) Lose some freaking weight.
February 19, 201016 yr I agree with Clyde on this one...(Never thought I'd say that) . Welcome, my friend.

There's a difference between being judgemental and being cruel and trust me I endured some cruel treatment over the years. I'll bet some of it came from people with your attitude about overweight people.

February 19, 201016 yr I don't have a problem with anything that Clyde has said in this thread. For the record I am 5' 9 1/2" and 267 lbs. I'm what the medical profession calls morbidly obese, but I've got nobody but myself to blame. For the last decade, about once ever 3 years I'll get serious about changing my habits and can usually get down to around 230 (which is still obese). But after a few months I find excuses to quit exercising and fall off the wagon. It's really a simple solution. I could easily be under 200 lbs. if I really wanted it. But I tend to be lazy, procrastinate, and it doesn't make sense to me to spend $4.00 for a salad at McDonalds, when I can get 2 double cheeseburgers for half the cost. I'm sure that in some cases people have a legitimate medical condition that causes them to be overweight, but for the majority of Americans, being fat is simply self inflicted and could easily be reversed with a few simply lifestyle choices.
February 19, 201016 yr No more babies in public. When they cry, I get anxiety attacks. This is a burden on me therefore it shouldn't be allowed to happen.
February 19, 201016 yr Interesting debate. For some reason, the basketball "principle of verticality" keeps popping into my head.
February 19, 201016 yr It wasn't him. He did have a funny piece about flying on a small plane. "How far will this plane go with only one engine? All the way to the ground." It was a comedian with a heavy southern accent. When I heard it many years ago before most of you were born, it was Jerry Clower.
February 19, 201016 yr Interesting debate. For some reason, the basketball "principle of verticality" keeps popping into my head. I'm quite familiar with that and you're right.
February 19, 201016 yr When I heard it many years ago before most of you were born, it was Jerry Clower. Jerry is an all-timer.
February 19, 201016 yr The discussion about fat people and why they're fat and why I'm insensitive is irrelevant to the debate. The issue can be simplified : Does a flying passenger's ticket include his/her space and the ability to be free from anyone for any reason invading their space in a permanent manner?
