Southwest asks Kevin Smith to debark

Featured Replies

That's a ridiculous way to do business and one I hope bites then in the rear. I've been on an airplane with some really hefty people sitting next to me, 4 or 5 hour flights at that, somehow I survived. Sorry, but this is just another example of how the whiners in this country are getting too much attention paid to them. People need to learn to man up.

I seriously doubt this hurts them at all. People will almost always look for the cheapest option. If they can fly SW for $100 cheaper than the next cheapest option what do you think they'll do? I actually am w/ Clyde on this. If I know SW won't let someone interfere w/ my space I'll give them more business.

That's cool, to each his own. I'll side with rockmom on this.

Since some of you think it's okay for fat people to only have to purchase one seat, even if they fill up half of mine, should it also be okay for me to pay only half price for my ticket, since I'm only using half of it?

If his story is correct I don't think he sould have been kicked off the plane. I just don't like it that SW is being raked through the coals for following their rules that he knew about to the point he purchased 2 tickets so he would have enough room. He wasn't bumped from his own flight.

Taking it even further would they be willing to switch me seats if they're next to a skinny person and I'm next to someone taking up half of my seat?

Honestly, I've never been on a plane where someone took up half of someone else's seat. That's mighty huge, I'm sure it's possible, but I've never seen it. Also, part of the problem is that airline seats have gotten smaller over the years so they could make more money, so part of the problem is of their making.

Being really fat, really happy, and extremely healthy, I have no problem with Clyde's opinion.

I've been buying 2 seats, 3 when Mrs. S flies with me, or riding in Business/First Class long before the airlines started their "width" policies. I did this even when I was thin. I like the extra space, but primarily, like Clyde, I don't care to have an uninvited someone invade my space. The difference is, I don't expect the airline to take care of my space issues, I take care of them myself.

Many will. However, you cannot tell me that, in this celebrity driven society, this incident will not hurt Southwest to some extent. If that were the case, then there would be no reason to pay the likes of Lebron and Tiger, these outrageous sums of money for endorsements. That door swings both ways.

My understanding is that he missed his original flight and elected to fly standby. If that's the case, then the misunderstanding is on him, because he should have made it clear to them that he was standing by for 2 seats.

However, Southwest handled the situation poorly. You can remove somebody from a plane without embarrassing them. There is nothing wrong with the policy. There is never an excuse for poor customer service, though. That is the problem the airline is getting raked across the coals over and needs to address.

He was scheduled for a 7:00 pm flight and got there earlier and asked to get on the 5:20 flight. He had 2 seats for the 7:00 flight. His issue was he was told if the arm rests came down and he wasn't over them he was good. He feels he did it and they still asked him to get off the flight. He could have taken his normal 2 seats for his regular flight. I seriously doubt someone next to him didn't complain. How else would the flight attendant have known unless he is enormously huge?

RM, I get his point. He doesn't like to touch anybody, but himself. :sssh:

Ahhhh... so that means when he says, "I haven't been feeling myself lately" he actually means...

Ewwwwwwww!

It could sure. I doubt it's an issue though. This happened Super Bowl week and we just mentioned it on here 2 days ago. I don't think its that big of an issue.

I'm stunned that you are unable to grasp mine as well.

For clarification purposes, YOU have interjected the health issue several times by stating that if an overweight person is shamed into losing weight, so be it, it would be good for them (sic). YOU have made it a subjective issue, rather than an objective issue. Somehow, you seem to feel that an objective business decision can be based upon subjective criteria, and I disagree.

And I challenge your "guarantee that All Tell is the only other person who may not get your point.

You are naive if you think that there aren't subjective decisions made every day in business.

If my insensitivity towards overweight people has clouded the issue then , again, let me be clear.

No matter what the reason is that you're in my space, you have to be removed or buy two seats.

Wow. So many ways to go with that.

Come on, RTS. Its not a matter of "surviving." Its a matter of getting what you pay for. I sat pressed against a window on a Comair flight from Mobile to Atlanta because a "thin-challenged" dude couldn't fit in his seat. That's unacceptable. Period.
