Raiders Give Janikowski Richest Deal Ever for Kicker

I find this fairly amusing. Not because Janikowski is not a quality kicker - he is - but they now have the highest paid kicker and punter in the league. As if those were the finishing touches on putting together a Super Bowl contender.

Can't wait to see who they'll overpay for next. Surely there's another Javon Walker, Deangelo Hall, Tommy Kelly, or Terdell Sands waiting out there for them to throw millions at. The one area they definitely don't need to address is QB. They are rock solid there.

I hope the deal includes a get out of jail free card?

He's a very good kicker and it depends on how the contract is structured as to whether or not it is a good deal.

While it sounds stupid, a kicker could come up big for them I guess considering if they play JaMarcus Russell there won't be too many TDs scored.

A lot of teams would have loved to have Janikowski last year.

Not to mention next year could be uncapped and if they put the majority of the money on the 2010 payroll they may not have to pay him much after that.

He has a huge leg but he's missed big ones before but I guess they all do. I would like to have a guy with his leg.. a Garrett Hartley would be nice.

He's their best player.

Kickers making $4 million a year.

God Bless the USA!

There's just not that much difference between a "good" $2M a year kicker and a "good" $4M a year kicker. Certainly not enough for a team at Oakland's level. Save the money and invest in a new QB or WR, two areas of horrific weakness for this club.

And $9 M of the contract is guaranteed. Stupid beyond stupid.

Just so we're all clear what other kickers in the NFL made this year:

2.7M Graham

2.2M Vinatieri

1.8M Longwell

1.7M Elam

1.5M Feely

1.4M Akers

1.4M Kaeding

1.3M Lindell

1.3M Reed

1.1M Rackers

1.0M Gostowski

900K Tynes

Again, you just don't spend that kind of money on a kicker who's the same general quality as many of the above kickers, especially when you have some glaring needs at other positions. Except QB, of course. They're fine there. And it's not as if the QB position is all that critical anyways. I'd rather have an elite punter.

He had an excellent year but he's also produced four seasons under 72%. Another poor decision by Al Davis.

I still can't believe people are shocked over this? Nothing Al Davis chose to do would shock me. The NFL should maybe looking at forcing him to sell the team.
