Campbell Co started the game out 1-0 before the game even started. A technical foul was called on sophomore Hoskins for dunking under the 15 minute mark.

 

Not sure how he could have dunked though considering Holmes starts their shell drill around the 15:30 mark.

 

I'll post my thoughts and recap after the UK game.

Holmes led 14-7 after 1.

Holmes led 26-19 at the half

Holmes led 41-30 at the end of 3.

 

Through 3 quarters, the closest Camels got was 7. With Holmes up 41-29, Elijah Pittman picked up back to back fouls in a matter of 10 seconds that would send him to the bench to start the 4th quarter.

 

CC scored the first 4 points of the 4th to close within 41-35, but Herndon responded with a big 3 to put Holmes back out by 9 at 44-35. Geiman then hit a 3 to close within 6 at 44-38. Ricardo Johnson then made two free throws to put Holmes back out in front by 8 at 46-38 at the 5:04 mark.

 

Camels then went on a 5-0 run out of a timeout to close within 46-43 and Pittman would come back in the game with 3:51 left. With the score 46-43, Holmes scored the next 4 points behind a JJ lay in and two Pittman free throws to push the lead back out to 7 at 50-43 with just under 2 minutes to play..

 

Brady Jolly then hit a big 3 to make it 50-46 and Holmes called a timeout with 1:11 left. Holmes had two straight turnovers while trying to pass the ball around the perimeter and CC called a timeout with 45 seconds left.

 

Nate McGovney came down and hit a big jumper with 38 seconds left to pull the Camels within 2 at 50-48. Holmes held the ball until around the 8 second mark before Ricardo Johnson was finally fouled and sent to the line with Holmes in the bonus.

 

Here's where things get interesting. Ricardo missed the front end of a one and one and JJ grabs a rebound...after grabbing the offensive rebound and making an attempt to dribble, the ref calls a late offensive over the back foul. HORRIBLE CALL AND VERY LATE.

If anything, Holmes simply needs to learn to finish better. Their ballhandling and decision making the last 2 minutes of the game was very poor and it almost cost them the game.

#31 Smith took the final shot for Campbell and I believe the same Holmes player dunking in warmups got a technical foul in the JV game for dunking while the officials were on the floor in warm ups. This young man may be in Coach Henley's dog house for a while...no pun intended.

 

Agree the Dawgs are a very talented team and probably still the team to beat in the 9th. But they need to get focused as the post season nears. Then again, people said that last year and look what happened...

We heard the same message when they had 4 games remaining. How are they doing so far?

Does margin of victory really matter? Last I checked a record only has wins and losses, and this is a win. We will see come tournament time who the best team really is.

It seems to me that coach Henley remains stubborn in his attempt to teach this team to take the air out of the ball at crucial times. Imo they just don't seem to have the personnel to do this. I would much rather see him let them attack the basket. I remember numerous times where they have had large leads or come down to the end of the half or end of the game and for whatever reason turned the ball over trying to protect it. Coach Henley knows this team better then we do but sometimes I shake my head and ask why he does some of things he does. This team is not the same team that won it all last year. Maybe he has a plan. As Bulldog fans let's hope so.

If that would play out then I would say Holmes wins State. Sometimes timely losses are not a bad thing leading up to the big dance. Sorta gets their attention and gets them interested again. They took it on the chin from Ryle just a few games ago. Holmes will be fine, a win is win.
