People like to spout these things, but they are simply not true. Speaking as one that has been self employed 27 years, and earns a living actually helping businesses operate more efficiently, see trends, take advantage of opportunities, avoid losses and layoffs, make more money, add jobs and grow... I think I have some idea how all this works. I can honestly say, I've never been given a job by a poor man. I have made lots of money for guys who came into this world poor and worked their butts off to not be poor again. Even teachers and other government employees have jobs because "earners" generate revenues, pay taxes and make their paychecks possible. Why the contempt for those who succeed financially? I'd like to know specifically what you think was "hooey" in my previous post.
February 20, 201016 yr Well, today was a tough day. My company just laid off 3 very good employees. I work for a small environmental consulting firm. We employ 27 people, well now 24. About a year ago I would have said we were recession/depression proof but that is just not true. When all the panic started a little more than a year ago I knew my company was OK because we had jobs lined up. But those jobs stopped, to a halt. I just feel like this is a real sad time. And you know, it doesn't come down to who is president or what side of the political spectrum your on. It comes down to people. I wish GWB, BHO, Pelosi, Reid, Palin and the rest could come out and see what it feels like for another person to be laid off. I mean lets face it, no matter what side you have been on (R or D) there really hasn't been any kind of emphasis on jobs. USA is praying for JOBS, just give us that and we will be happy.

I work for a large company at the other end of spectrum. The signs of 'recovery' do not seem to be showing up yet there either and more layoffs and early retirement packages are almost a given. Lucky is 100% correct. The pols (R, D, I) all need to put away HC takeover, oops - I mean HC insurance, put away cap and tax, put away every other initiative that is not about CREATING JOBS (no more of this 'saving jobs' talk to justify the squandering or outright stealing of the stimulas money) and get serious about the economy and jobs. I saw a saying that is very appropriate for the situation - "If your not angry, your not paying attention."

I'd be willing to bet you got some breaks along the way being a single mother as well, I know my mom did as well as all the other single moms I've known over the years.

You cannot fix the economy without fixing the cost of health insurance.

Having the government take over 1/6th of the economy is not the answer. Having Pelosi and Reid say they are going to ram their bill through when a majority of the American people don't want their bill is not the answer. Tearing down the walls of government enforced restrictions that prevent competition among health insurance providers across state lines would be the best place to start. The government is preventing competition across state lines. One reason you don't hear people complaining as much about the high cost of auto or home owners insurance is that we can buy it from whoever makes us the best deal.

Where was the government takeover in the compromise bill? That is such hooey and is only a talking point to make people opposed to the bill. There was no public option and no single payer option so where was/is the takeover? One of the issues that people keep talking about is selling insurance over state lines, well, if that lowers costs that has to be some nationwide standards, otherwise companies flock to the state with the lowest standards and loosest coverage regulations and they sell from there. Which helps no one in this process. And then there is the issue with forcing everyone to buy it, government infringement you say, well if you take off the pre-existing rules so companies have to cover everybody, then there are many people who will not get coverage until they have said condition, which is a horrible business proposition. So there are two things you have to have to make this work. 1. National minimal standards so that people are selling real insurance if they do it across state lines 2. Mandate that everyone has it. Those are the two things that lead everybody to talk about a govt takeover, but it is simple that you can't have real reform if you don't have these two things. AND, you cannot have a good economic recovery if you don't get the exploding costs of health insurance under control.

You do realize they are the real culprits in health care costs? Just look at the difference in profit margins.
