February 19, 201016 yr I would say $50,000 - $200,000 (maybe a little higher) or so. I would say 40,000-225,000....
February 19, 201016 yr I would say 40,000-225,000.... That's probably more accurate. I started at $50,000 because it puts you out of reach for the EIC.
February 19, 201016 yr I would say 40,000-225,000.... Family of four on 40,000.00 is middle class?? hmmmm. This is causing some thought. I don't know that I disagree, but that doesn't sound like much. 8400 in rent 1800 in utilities (gas, electric, phone, water, sewer) 1200 in auto gas 7200 in groceries 12000 in health insurance I am at 30000 already.

First of all it depends on where you live. Second of all a family of 4 making $40,000 would pay pretty much nothing in taxes. Third your insurance and rent is a high estimate.

February 19, 201016 yr $700/month is high rent? $1000/month for family insurance is high? Thank goodness you don't live in Louisville, or you'd be shocked! I pay $600 (insurance and tax included) for my house with a family of 4. A family of 4 in Kentucky can get health coverage for much less then $1000/month. These are quotes for a family of 4, zip code 42420. http://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ehi/IFPSponsorship.ds?clearFilters=true&isSponsor=Y&cid=4013&order=2&viewplans=Y&ehi.group.CARRIER=4013&mcei.app.terminalID=__tid__4_ You do realize there are other places in the world besides Louisville. $700 per month in New York wouldn't get you a cardboard box in an ally. $700 per month in Henderson, KY will get a pretty nice place.

I absolutely understand and resent your sarcasm. But do you understand that there are places in KY outside 42420 that $700 won't get you an apartment big enough to house a family of 4....and it's not just in Louisville.

And there are places outside of KY that $2000 wouldn't get you an apartment big enough for a family of 4. But if we are keeping it to KY there are way more places that $700 would get you more then a big enough place for 4. The cost of living in Louisville and the like are the exception in this state. Obviously middle class is going to be subjective depending on where you live in the country. $250,000 per year in Fulton, KY would be upper class while $50,000 would be middle but $250,000 in New York would be middle class while $50,000 would be in the gutter.

I think most of those estimates are on the high side, but IMO it's always wise to overestimate when budgeting, so yeah it would probably be tight. I guess one major question I would have though is, if you're making $40,000 a year combined (I'm assuming two parent family), maybe you should hold off on having children until you were a little more financially secure, no?

He is probably underestimating on the food and gas and utilities. We spend right at $200 a week at Wal-Mart every week for food and other around the house items. As for gas it's about $60 a week and average about $200-$225 per month in Utilities. And I agree with second statement except what happens if you lose your job making alot more and have to take one making that much less.

Who's fault is it if someone has two kids making only $40,000 a year these days? Not a smart move. Agree?

Well I'm hoping if a married couple with no children are making much more than that, they are properly saving money, but even if they're not, it's definitely doable, just would require a major overhaul in spending habits. As to your first point, I guess it just depends on usage and one's habits. My mom and dad make much more than 40K a year, but they would only spend $125 every 10 days on food. That's for a family of 5. So as I said, it really just depends.
