February 11, 201016 yr Author While this is not the one that talks about how the Books were chosen, this is interesting that we have more historical evidence to support the stories of the Bible than we have of any other historical document that we use as fact in what we believe happened in history and you learned when you were in school as fact. http://www.bluegrasspreps.com/showthread.php?t=186696&highlight=Bible
February 11, 201016 yr Not at all. I am reading the entire story. You do not seem to be. You want to read one part and think that is the END of the story. But it is not. Read the entire story and put it in the context that Jesus makes it. When Jesus came, he fulfilled the OT Law of sacrificing on the altar to try and earn God's salvation. I have always felt that the OT was God's way of showing us that HUMANS are not capable of earning salvation with God. Cause in the OT we kept screwing it up. So, God said, see you can't do it. I know you and how proud you are and thinking you can do anything. But you can't and the OT shows you can't. It is a part of the Bible that shows Human's failure to earn God's salvation. So God said I will take care of it for you with my Son, Jesus. You have to read/study the entire story. As far as how the books were chosen, that is a thread that has been discussed here before. I will try and find it later when I have more time. Are we supposed to believe without question that God sent the Angel of Death to kill the first-born son in the OT? If so, then how is it not picking and choosing? You say, "that's not the whole story", which may be the case, but it doesn't change the fact that you are still advocating picking and choosing. Based on what you're saying, it seems that the OT we should take at face-value, but the NT is 100% literally what happened, no questions asked. If the entire Bible is God-Breathed, that makes zero sense to me.

I don't have a problem believing what is in the OT. But with Jesus, you NOW view those incidents through His eyes. I believe the entire Bible and the process of it being put together was driven by God.
February 11, 201016 yr Hebrews 8:5 Moses was instructed with the pattern on the mountain, but now He(Jesus) has obtained a more excellant ministry he will be the mediator of better Covenate, which comes from better promises. verse 7 If the first covenate had been faultless there would be no need of a second.."behold says the LORD the day is coming when I will make a new covenate with the house of Israel, not according to the one I made with their fathers when I took them by hand and lead them out of Egypt." A new Covenate, he has made the first one obsolete, growing old and vanishing away.
February 11, 201016 yr Do you believe that God opened up the ground and swallowed (killed) all those during the Golden Calf episode? Do you believe in the story of Noah and God flooding the world and thus killing all those during the flood? Not sure and No. Do you know the story of Gilgamesh, which is much older than the Noah story (it is told by the Sumerians) of a great flood and a big boat and animals and people being saved? Do you know there numerous flood stories from Numerous cultures? You believe that Noah got 2 of EVERY animal on the ark? Especially the one described with so many cubits? It is impossible.

If the bolded is what you believe than you haven't studied the story. The story does not say he got 2 of every animial. He actually got more than that. If you can believe in God, why can't you believe that God was able to send the animals to Noah? Saying it is impossible is saying there is a limit to God's abilities.

Because there is no way they could all fit on the ark. So if we are to believe that what the Bible says is definitely true, we must believe that God gathered every type of animal for Noah on the ark. We must also believe that the dimensions of the ark are as they are told in the Bible. Basic math and reasoning says that it's impossible for both to be true.
February 11, 201016 yr I highly suggest some of you pick-up "How to Read the Bible For All It's Worth" by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart. It's a great layman's tool for learning how to read the Bible in context.

So, let me understand this correctly, you guys believe that God created the Sun, the Moon, the stars, the Earth, the human body, night, day, Heaven and Hell and all of creation and yet God is limited on getting animals on an ark? I can see the conversation: God staring at the sun: Have you noticed how wonderful the sun is that I created. It heats, it brightens and it burns on it's own power. It surely is a wonderful creation that I made. Noah: Hey, God, sun is wonderful but I am having trouble getting the hamsters on the ark. God (despairingly): Sorry, Noah, can't help you with the hamsters. There are some things even I can't do. :D:D:D If God can create, and I believe He did, everything out of nothing, than I feel comfortable in saying that He can handle a plan on getting some animals onto the ark.

In the thread I linked to above, I listed the historical documentation of the Bible and how it is far greater than any other historical document in history. I would like to know the background of historical proof that the Gilgamesh sotry is older and documentation that it is.
February 11, 201016 yr A person has faith that the Bible is true. I have this faith and love to share it, as I was reading comments about the Ark, I couldn't wait to post, God created the universe in 6 days, putting animals in an Ark? But Ladies got to it first and did a great job making God's point. Also for the posters asking about the ARK, 40 days/nights it rainned, but it was several months before they could come out, they were in the ark over 6 months. I have met many people who Pick/Choose verses, and even have caught my self doing it. Laying in bed on a Sunday morning after getting to bed aroud 2AM, but I have to get up someone might be giving their life to Jesus and I want to be there.

Where did I say that? I'm the one that doesn't believe the Bible is factual, simply a guide on how to live.
February 11, 201016 yr ...but back to why some people have chosen to omit books from the Bible, yet tell people contextualization and interpretation cannot be done without diluting or changing Christianity.
February 12, 201016 yr Author ...but back to why some people have chosen to omit books from the Bible, yet tell people contextualization and interpretation cannot be done without diluting or changing Christianity. While I am getting older and older each day, I was not involved in the picking of the 66 books of the Bible. So, I cannot accurately say. I have read in several different areas that the books had to pass several tests before they were included or excluded. Had to be written close enough to the actual life of Jesus that those who were alive during that time could say yea or nay to the factualness of the book. Read that a book had to have universal acceptance from the leaders of the early church (that would be the Apostles and some that were voted to other apostles.) They would accept the book because they were there when it happened and could say yea to the factualness. (not sure if that is a word but I assume you know what I mean.)
