One word to describe the Birds effort tonight, pitiful. Team could not get shots off and spend too much time standing around waiting for the coach to call a play that ultimately results in a tough shot. Keep hearing the coach yell to push the ball up the floor and then the ball handler gets the ball to the top of the key and backs it out to run a play. Highlands went the first 5 plus minutes of the game without scoring a point which included at least 3 airballs. This team looks lost and plays with zero confidence.

Great Observation:

#1 Pitful team effort :puke:

#2 Overcoaching I've never seen anything like it ranting and raving the whole game. Sit down coach and show some poise... these boys know how to play check their track record going back to the 7th grade.

#3 Players are lost and are not playing with confidence. Against Shroder HS Tuesday night Coach Flynn instructed his players to get the ball inside. Stewart gets the ball on the foul line tries a little high-low action tries to throw the ball inside, makes a bad pass - ball goes out of bounds Coach Flynn yanks him out of the game. Not one coach comes over and says a word to him. Thats sad Jack's a good boy he wants to be coached and he'll try to do whatever the coach ask. Or tell a kid he's a horrible shooter and not to shoot the ball. Thats a joke especially when you're scoring 36 points. Coaches are suppose to be teachers of the game... not tear kids confidence down :puke::puke::puke::puke::puke:

CONGRATULATIONS TO Coach Mullins and RYLE  Big win against one of N.KY. best teams... Sometimes

I've commented to several people this year from middle school (understandably so) all the way through high school the trend now for the coach to call a play every trip down the floor. What is practice for? I agree with Catbird's observation not only for this game but most games about over coaching. Kid's are not allowed to play, think, and adjust on their own. They turn the ball over because they are trying to run the play (which many times the opponent knows) because they are afraid the coach will pull them if they don't. After countless hours of practice if the kids can't make a trip down the floor once in awhile without a coaches input maybe the coach needs to re-evaluate his techniques.

I do see a lot of coaches calling plays from the sideline, I dont remember that when I was running the point in HS. I remember coming down and running the show, I guess things have changed.

I am very surprised by this outcome. I honestly think Highlands has had a weird season so far with the injuries and some players just not bringing it each night out. There is still time to right the ship but the Birds will need to get focused and come back out tonight with a better effort or they will get shellacked by the Rebels.

Thats called a fastbreak. I disagree. When in a half court set, the coach should be calling the play. If its a well designed play, and the players execute well, you should get a good look. I'm really surprised with the backlash towards the Highlands coach after only 14 games.

Its tough to inherit a group of Srs who have played for another coach their entire HS career IMO. You hope they buy into Coach Flynn's system but its no gurantee. I hope they realize the potential they have and finish strong because they can seriously make a run for the Regional crown.

Coach has these boys playing scared make a mistake and you're coming out. A great way to destroy confidence. These boys want to be coached NOT humiliated. Its "old school" kids are different these days. You have to be a teacher, mentor, and even sometimes a big brother or dad for some of these kids ask Coach Henley (Holmes HS) or Coach Dilts(Dayton HS). A seventeen year old kid knows when he's stinking it up on the court and deserves to come out. But, that same kid wants to be coached and what he can do to improve and not make the same mistake the next time.

Just making an observation about the Highlands kids they're the most coachable group I've ever seen. If coach says run "Flex" offense everytime down the court they'll do exactly what the coach wants... To a fault.

One of the beauties of AAU ball is there's not alot of time to practice and the competition is much more fierce than it was lastnight. Teams whose players work together will be more successful, hence look at what Grubbs, Lother, Gordon, Grote, Dill, Smith-Keller's AAU team (with a little help from their Newport buddies McDaniel and Collins) did at the AAU Championship last spring (3rd place) including slaying the giant Elisha Justice's Derek Smith All-Stars by playing team ball. They only ran 3 set plays. But they got up in the other teams grill and played tough TEAM DEFENSE forced turn-overs and bad shots. And most of all put on an absolute clinic of how to get the ball to the open man.

Its not X's and O's that win ballgames its TEAMWORK coaches, players and everyone involved working together.

Basketball is not rocket science you DO NOT have to run a play everytime you go down the court to be successful.

Finally let me close with this Quote:

:ylsuper: I am going to share that with my 3rd grade team.

My comments weren't toward the Highlands coach but to Catbird's observations of over coaching at times.

Great but makes sure you put the emphasis on having fun  at the 3rd grade level and NOT get to caught up on winning championships. Make it fun for them first then the championship will come later. Give them lots of love... tell them what a great job they're doing even if they're playing bad and please, please don't put so much emphasis on winning. We're ruining our youth sports by placing so much emphasis on "winning" and not competing and having FUN.

GOOD LUCK with your "Baby Birds" :dancingpa

FYI- I peeled that of a water cooler after my son's baseball team won a City Championship. The Coaches were Steve Roller, Chris Collinsworth, and Al Watson... I sure they swiped it from "The Master" Coach Dale Mueller:ylsuper:

Very good points. :thumb:

I help coach an 8th grade team down at Turner's and even we put a lot more emphasis on having fun and developing them as individuals, rather than focusing on just winning.

Keep up the great work... A LOT OF CHARACTER has come out of that building.:thumb:

Well, it certainly didn't take long for Coach Flynn's honeymoon to end with the fans.
