January 16, 201016 yr Surprised it is Lewis. I figured Caldwell blew it by not trying to go undefeated. Thought maybe someone like Turner at San Diego might be a choice.
January 16, 201016 yr Indianapolis, San Diego and New Orleans all had good years...but, all had a lot more certainty coming into the year as well. I believe Marvin got the votes because of three things... 1.) A SIX win improvement over last year 2.) Making the playoffs, with a team that is not traditionally considered a "playoff team" 3.) Holding the team together following those tragics deaths during the season
January 16, 201016 yr He deserved it b/c he won the division title w/ no Pro Bowlers until Chad was invited b/c of two injuries. He however is still a terrible coach IMO. I hope he doesn't get a new contract when his runs out. Zimmer would be a nice replacement after next year and hopefully he has an offensive coordinator and someone w/ a clue when it comes to clock managemnet in mind.
January 16, 201016 yr The coach of the year in the NFL is a terrible coach? Don't get me wrong, he has plenty of flaws, but every coach does. Hopefully he can build on this season next year. The schedule is BRUTAL though.

January 16, 201016 yr So if you win coach of the year that disqualifies you from being a bad head coach? Interesting. Dick Jauron and his career 60-82 record disagree w/ you. I don't want to get into an argument over semantics, but "coach of the YEAR" does not take into account your CAREER record. You could have a guy go winless for a decade, and then take his team to the playoffs the next, and he could still win COY. If you are a Bengals fan, you have probably dissected every play and every personnel move over the past year. If you are not a lover of Marvin, you probably have highlighted each of his "mistakes". However, when being voted on by a nationwide panel of writers...they're not going to get that far. I would say the consensus this year is that a.) Marvin is a good coach to play for (no players demanding to be traded, or being outright benched) b.) last year this squad won a total of 4 games last year and c.) probably some of the most noteworthy off-the-field news, dealt with the tragic deaths of Vicki Zimmer and Chris Henry. THAT is what most likely was looked at...not the X's and O's.

That doesn't mean I have to think he's a good coach.
January 16, 201016 yr It's just sad that "Bengals fans" in this thread can't say congrats and move on.

I hope he doesn't get a new contract when his runs out. Zimmer would be a nice replacement after next year and hopefully he has an offensive coordinator and someone w/ a clue when it comes to clock management in mind. Wow! I admit not to be the biggest Lewis fan at times. However he got a team to make the playoffs after only winning 4 games last year, and doing it without any pro bowlers. Also doing it while having the tragedy's that happened this year, and some really key injuries. A terrible coach as you say wouldn't have been about to do that. Yes when it comes to game management he might be one of the worst in the league. However don't let that be thing thing that makes you say he is a terrible coach. There is more to coaching than just that. Its all the coaching that goes on during the week of practices, its being able to get your guys to play hard basically no matter what. This team always has seemed to play pretty hard for Marvin, even though they don't have the most talented teams. A terrible coach wouldn't have been able to do that. There is more to coaching than just the game management. With that he is pretty bad, but with everything else he seems to do pretty well. So congrats to coach Marvin Lewis. He took a team that is not the most talented in the world, and was able to get them to make the playoffs with no pro bowlers.
January 16, 201016 yr So far since Marvin has been the Coach of the Bengals. The Bengals have won 2 division titles, the Steelers have won three, and the Ravens have won 2. So you can't be a terrible coach, to have done that. Yes he hasn't done anything in the playoffs in those two appearances like those teams have. However those teams haven't had their QB get knocked out on the first play in any game either. So who knows how they could have done in 2005.
January 16, 201016 yr It's just sad that "Bengals fans" in this thread can't say congrats and move on. I really think we have some of the most negative fans in football. Even when we have a good team, people are still not happy and wanting people gone.
