Who are the likely candidate to fill the O & D Line positions. Does NewCath have similar size as last year, or will they have to use more quickness this year up front?

Logan Martin will have a big junior year if he has a good offseason. I look for him and Tallon to lead the O and D lines.

They don't have another Jake Smith coming up, and they won't be as heavy,but should be more athletic on the line this year.

Is Jake Giesler playing FB next season or just focusing on hoops? Maybe Pops can talk him back into baseball???

This is old news. Eddie Eviston ( NCC & Georgetown ) will replace Bob Schneider.

From watching last season, whoever plays QB better have some good wheels. 4 wide outs, and 5 on 8 blocking scemes don't give much time to get experience at that position. I think the line play will be much quicker, and stronger than last year, with a couple of these kids being excellent pullers. The defense should be awsome.

That would mean that 1 receiver is uncovered and should make a very easy pre-snap read for the qb!!!!

Coaching more than a handful of the junior high parochial boys; can somebody please explain why the Hill does not schedule HHS? NewCath has some very good athletes coming through the ranks in both baseball and basketball and the rivalry with HHS is very strong in most sports in the district. They have some good football players as well; since they play in different classes, I don't see the wisdom in not playing HHS? Ryle has scheduled and it will make a difference in its 6A program. NewCath football has been down the past couple of years and I for one would like to see them move up to the elite and champion state in 2A once again. I am a homer; but I would like to see NKY capture all its football state championships!

I would like to see them play again. NewCath has nothing to lose and everything to gain. Highlands will almost always be the best team that they see all year. It would only help come playoff time.

I know Coach Schneider and Duffy had a BIG falling out. That is when I thought the decision to not play Highlands anymore was made. I know there was absolutely no love losss between the two. If they played (other than the 1st year) since Coach Mueller has been there, then perhaps I am mistaken.

I probably should have stated, playing HHS might be what puts the program over the top. I think NCC is very capable of making a run at multiple state championships. I think what is done is done and let's move forward. The boys compete against each other in every other sport until they hit high school and then the don't play one another. Trust me the boys have a mutual respect for one another, what lessons are being taught? I thought it was about the students; not to pacify to very successful coaches? The schools are very proud and have strong traditions. IMO it does not make a bit of sense; but I respect both programs and really wish they would play.

In my opinion, NCC has a lot to lose by playing Highlands. NCC gets a whole lot of Catholic kids from FT. If Highlands was to beat NCC by a lot of points, it could have some effect on where younger kids wanted to go to high school. Sure some parents will insist that their kids to to a Catholic high school and force their kids to NCC. However other parents might not be so concerned about sending their kids to a Catholic high school and leave it up to the kid. If you were an 8th grader, really into football and had seen Highlands beat NCC handily the prior Fall, you might be more inclined to go to Highlands than NCC. Without a yearly match up, the people trying to convince the kid to go to NCC can at least claim that NCC is as good of a football team as Highlands. If they start playing and Highlands wins big in a lot of years, that claim goes out the window.

The scheduling of Highlands question is a good one. Obviously, NCC doesn't fear playing anyone considering their first 6 games last year were all against 5A and 6A schools. There must be another reason why they don't play Highlands.

After doing a little research, I have answered my own question. NewCath and Highlands played annually for many years. After an the 1993 game Coach Schneider had decided to cancel the series, in large part because of his feelings toward Duffey. In 1994 no game between the 2 schools were played. After a meeting with Coach Mueller the two schools resumed playing in 1995. The played in 95,96, 97 and then finally in 98.

 

None of those games were particulary close. With final game in 98 being a 62 -0 blowout by Highlands. That is the season that Highlands also won games 88 -12, 64 -0, 72-7, and 63-12.

 

The two schools have not played in Varsity football since. I think LN may be right. That final loss coincided with Newcath's 1st losing season in almost 30 years. There may have been a thought that the two programs were no longer on similar competitive levels.

 

Although Highlands dominated the series, prior to the break in 1994, almost all of the games had been very competitive.

 

NewCath has never been shy about playing tough opponents, however, they have also recognized their limitations. That is the main reason they stopped playing the Moeller's, Elder's and St. X's 15 years earlier.
