I am surprised by this hire.

 

I do think Tommy Tuberville is a good football coach. He obviously has been uncomfortable with the spread offense in the past, but yet the administration is keeping many of the same assistant coaches so as to continue the Mike Leach system.

 

Seems strange to me.

Franklin's offense at Auburn was severely handcuffed by Tubbs though IMO.

I have a question. Why does everyone seem to think that a coach that averaged 8.5 wins per season in the SEC can't win in the Big 12?

I love Tubbervilles style of play. I believe that he will do a very good job there if the people give him time to put in his system..... a running game (and not just as an afterthought) and actually play defense. Those two seemed to be absent from TTU for quite a while. Passing the ball all over the field will put butts in the seats. Defense, a running game and special teams will win championships.

Tommy Tubberville is also a top notch person and a class act along with being a very good coach.

Exactly, all one has to do is look at his teams sucsess when at Ole Miss and Auburn. I think that most who complain or say anything about him just don't like his syle of play and would rather watch a team throw the dang ball all over the field on every play. JMO

There is not a post in this thread that calls Tuberville a bad coach. There are people saying it is a bad fit for Tuberville and TT. That is two different things. Some (me included) find the whole thing very ironic and strange when you look at Tubberville's last year at Auburn and what he is walking into at TT. I like Tuberville's offense at Auburn with the power run game. Just look at a few different things.

 

1) TT defense is not horrible. They average giving up less than 30 pts a game. They also were one of the top defenses in the country in sacks. Because of the style and pace TT ran their offense the defense was out there for more snaps. By that alone you are going to give up more yardage. Your style of offense can make your defense look better or worse than what it truly is.

 

2) School identity: Over the past 10 years TT has developed a culture of throwing the ball and gambling. Its who they are now and that runs pretty deep. Think about if a coach came to UK basketball and ran the whole Princeton offense where you drain the shot clock with a ton of back door passes. Gone is the press and the uptempo. Even if the coach wins it is not going go over well with the fans.

 

3) Tuberville not getting to pick his staff: While he had complete control of his staff he would not let Franklin run the offense. Now he is stuck with a group that runs the same offense and want to gamble (go for it on 4th more). That just is not a good fit.

 

4) TT is built for their offense. What TT does from a technique method, practice method and so on is different than many teams. They are not built to run a Tuberville offense and it is going to take 3 years at the least to get things together. TT was also able to recruit in a different manner because of their style of play. Now Tuberville will be competing with teams for talent again.

 

I think Tuberville got screwed over at Auburn in his last few years. I think he is a good coach and has a good offense. I just think that him going to TT makes no sense to him or for the school.

Sorry misunderstood. Tone is tough to get sometimes on the boards.

Tuberville has a HUGE defensive background, I imagine what he said in the article is true to his strengths. He will pay close attention to Defense rahter than Offense. Not saying he will neglect it, but rather leave it in the hands of someone who knows it better than him. Maybe TT can improve their defense. Although barrel said it best, your offense can either help or hurt your defense.

Good Hire Tubberville comes in smiles, kisses babies, lets the staff at Tech do its things wins a game or two and retires.
