Elliott County

Featured Replies

Was there a natural disaster in Eastern Kentucky? Elliott County and there fans seem to have fallen off the face of the earth.

They had one of the best teams in the state last year, though many would not acknowledge the fact. Elitists from NKY and Louisville trashed the team and players all season. Why would Elliott fans open up this years team to the same treatment? I for one commend the Elliott fans for this.:thumb:

E.C. is still competitive even with those losses.

Trashed them? That's a bit harsh. Everybody recognized Elliott was one of the top five teams in the state last year. Just because some folks questioned whether they would actually win the Sweet 16 is not the same thing as "trashing" them.

Personally, I think the biggest problem for some Elliott fans, whether longtime or bandwagoneer, was that not everyone got on board with the lovefest, a lovefest which went completely overboard.

Bottom line is this: If you're going to swim in the deep water, expect some sharks to be swimming nearby.

It's good to hear from you Lion Mania. We are all still here, still reading BGP, and the bashing still continues, but now it's the fans. We still love our team and still stand behind them and support them. No they are not the team from last year, but they are still good as Lion Mania says. Last years team was a dream team for Elliott County and small schools everywhere. We have no Toyota Plant or Big City across the river to draw players, ours was a bunch of local country boys with dedication and love of the game. That just didn't sit too well with the "elitists" as Lion Mania states. I remember reading lots of boasting and grandstanding on many threads that didn't receive near the trashing Elliott County did. But Elliott County went to the big dance and we enjoyed every minute of it. We aren't going away, and we are still watching our team

Very Nice!!:ylsuper:

Very nice post. It seems that if we Elliott County fans are on here too much we are dogged for it; and now that we are not on as much we are dogged for it. Goes to show the dislike for small town schools by people who are fans of traditional powers.

Not everyone recognized them as top 5. Its the handful of sharks that visited virtually every sixteenth region thread that Im referring to. I have no problem with anyone questioning whether or not they could win it all.

For the record, none of the sharks Im referring to have posted in this thread.

As you pointed out, it was just a HANDFULL, But some want to bunch everyone from other regions together especially if they did not fully support EC 100% or questioned anything about them! People bunching everyone with a big employer or bigger cities either in the school districts or nearby, or saying elitists from certain areas this or that, just brings out more people questioning a team for whatever reasons.

I was rooting for EC the past couple of years, as I was for a few other teams as well, but if one would look at some posts in this thread, some are already starting to get touchy, and the thread had an honest question. As was mentioned their seemed like a lot of regular EC posters everyday, now it's hard to find any thread about them.

And like you (JPP) stated, none of those sharks have posted here as they too have gone away, and their were very few of them to begin with. The ones I know from NKY who questioned EC or got on them were far from being elitists in anything.

Some times the "bullies" (traditional basketball powers) get hit in the mouth and don't like it; may even feel threatened! EC had a storybook season (or 3) and got some national notoriety that many bigger schools have never gotten. Obviously, it didn't sit well!

To be fair, Elliott didn't play a lot of traditional powers over the storybook 3-year run, and lost to those traditional powers more often than they won. Elliott mostly got fat by feasting on a weak 16th Region during that time, so it's understandable why some people would be skeptical.

Here are the games I saw against teams who could fairly be called traditional powers:

06/07

Paintsville 60, EC 53

Warren Cent. 92, EC 76

07/08

EC 72, Christian Co. 63

CovCath 76, EC 62

Mason Co. 90, EC 61

Mason Co. 66, EC 62

08/09

EC 86, Mason Co. 71

EC 89, Ballard 75

Holmes 67, EC 57

So, if you look at it, last season is when the EC hype machine went into overdrive, but before then EC was a whoppin' 1-5 against traditional powers, justifying the skepticism from the folks who hadn't jumped on the bandwagon.

Ha... never really thought of it like that before. Feels like that's what happens though. I guess we all just long for "The Good Ol' Days." Wait, I'm happy with this 2009-10 team.

I believe this hits the nail on the head. USA Today, ESPN, etc., all this national notoriety that little old Elliott County received over all the teams with D-1 players, the big long and athletic beasts on some teams, players with wing-spans a mile wide that could do windmill dunks above the rim, but still yet Elliott County was the Cinderella favorite all through the season and at the Sweet 16 ball. Mr. Viking, you said it well.

If they wasn't such a great team would be still be in this discussion today like they are still lacing them up! They obviously had a impact on a lot of people positive and negative so they did something and can we just leave it at that. :D

Never said they weren't a great team ...
