Would you be a high school basketball coach?

Featured Replies

Curious about this.

How many of you would (if you could) be a high school basketball coach? If so, what side (boys/girls)? What kind of philosphy would you try to instill?

With that said, could you deal with the maturity (or lack thereof) of the players and fans?

If you're a coach already, what are some things you do? Philosphy? Players and Parents...

Since your question was in the general discussion forum, I am going to say for me at least, not basketball but baseball and I would teach defense, defense and pitching with the philosphy of, if they can't score, they can't win!

Working with the kids to me at least would be the easy part but the parents? Now that is a horse of a different color!

Good points!

Add to that working with the administrators, in the wrong situation.

Bad parents and poor administration is a toxic mix.

I couldn't imagine wanting to coach basketball, but if I did I would want to always play good defense and play up tempo. Press, alot of 3's, good ball handling, and an aggressive defense. I'd want to play about 10 or 11 players, and try to score as many as possible with alot of running and gunning.

Okay, Pitino.

I would want to coach basketball. I like it so much, I think I would enjoy it.

^^I'd want to make Pitino ball look stale and boring. Phoenix Suns style offense with aggressive traps and excessive gambling on the defensive end.

I would love it. I love the game of basketball, and would love to share that with young kids.

9 to 10 deep, full court trap the old Arkansas Defense. Straight in your face D. Offense I would make that decision on what I had to work with. Mostly would be running some type of motion with a little UCLA high post thrown in. We would crash the boards with one guy breaking towards the other end after the shot with the other 4 grabbing for the board. I always love the theory of your Defense starting your Offense. I would coach either girls or guys, but the system would be implemented and would be very athletic. We would not lose games because of athleticism.

You play to what your team can do.

Always, always, ALWAYS, teach man-to-man principles even if you can only play it very little, every defense is based on it.

Press to control tempo, whether you want to speed it up or slow it down.

Teach proper spacing on offense, how to read screens, how to set screens....how to make a proper pass.

Emphasize getting 50/50 balls, blocking out/rebounding, great transition defense, good shot selection, attacking the rim, help side defense and FT shooting.

Boys.

Boys Basketball. I would like the press and fast paced tempo. Teamwork is essential in this sport and in the real world.

Emphasize getting to the boards, shot selection, and FT shooting.

I would be a boys basketball coach as a first choice and a girls coach as a very close second choice. I coached youth sports for years up to 15 year olds and really enjoyed it. One part I did not like was dealing with "some" parents and fans. A coach in any sport has to realize that goes with the territory an must have "alligator" thick skin. I, at one time was wanting to go to college and eventually become a boys basketball and/or baseball coach but things did not end up that way. Girls basketball has imo come a very long way in the last 10-20 years in that it is taken more seriously now than ever and I really wouldn't mind coaching it now.

As for philosphy, first of all and over any "X's and O's" I would have to have strict dicipline in place, without dicipline you have no team or respect. I also would demand my team/players represent themselves, their school. student body and community in the highest regard......to have class.

As for the style of play that would depend on the talent one has. I like an up tempo, pressure defense style but if your talent doesn't match that paticular style then I would have no problem playing a motion type offense or even a slow down/Princeton style if needed. My philosophy is one that I heard a long time ago........"It's not about the X's and O's, it's about the Jimmy's and Joe's"

Emphasize getting to the boards, shot selection, and FT shooting.

:thumb: I would add DEFENSE to that list. It doesn't take great talent to play defense and rebound, just desire and hustle.

No I wouldn't want to be. Why because I would be awful at it.:lol::lol:

I did actually coach a Little League Flag Football team. :ylsuper::ylsuper: Went 8-2. Both losses came from the team that beat us in the championship game. :irked:

I would not be a good basketball coach. I don't understand the game well enough to coach it. I did coach my son's YMCA team when he was 7. I think we won 1 game all season. I tried to teach defense, ball handling, then shooting in that order.

If you have an undersized and nonathletic team, is shooting priority #1? With a team that isn't big enough in the post, and not fast enough to push the pace, do you rely on screens and the three ball?
