I am very frustrated today over an event in one of my classes earlier. I am a senior at UK, I graduate in May with a History degree and going to law school next fall. I lacked a required natural science class to graduate so I am taking a Geology course with mostly freshman. In the class are some of "UK's finest athletes", I used to think this, but today I have lost all respect for them. Today was the classes last exam before the final and after I had finished I was on my way out the door only to see certain athletes being given the answers to the exam from a young lady appearing not to even be taking the exam herself. Granted the exam was not so hard and a study guide was given with all of the exact exam questions on it, I studied no more than an hour and feel like I did really well. I never been so frustrated to know that these athletes are spoon fed while they are on campus. They have a free education that most would do anything for and that take everything for granted. They feel as if everyone should kneel to them. I have always been aware that athletes are given lots of slack when it comes to their academics but had never seen it first hand. As the young lady gave the answers, I noticed the smiling of the athletes. One stuck their toungue out at the the other in a joking manner as to say, "we are not going to get caught, we are going to get a better grade than those that work hard and we didn't even have to study any at all." I don't know if anyone else feels as strongly as I do, but today I am angry with a certain group of UK athletes and it makes it really hard to cheer for them on gamdays.:madman::madman::madman:

It was so very obvious, I do not see how they were not caught. I mean the girl was in between the athletes, two on each side of her, telling them the answers. It was on a Scantron so they were just filling in the bubbles as fast as they could.

Neither did I. Never noticed any cheating, however, most of the attendance issues were due to away games. Whenever they were supposed to be in class, someone from the athletic department went from classroom to classroom with a checklist marking who was attending class and who wasn't. Had a class with Shagari Alleyne one semester and he missed a class that he should have been attending. That night when UK had a home game, Shagari sat on the bench and saw zero playing time against a very bad team that UK beat by 20 or 30+.

 

Not saying that's the way it is now, just that I never personally saw any cheating. Had classes with several UK football players and the two notable UK basketball players I had classes with were Shagari and Randolph Morris.

 

I know of recent UK basketball players who have cheated though. One of my co-workers had a class at UK with Ramel Bradley. He said Bradley would copy off him all the time, and the funniest thing happened on the final, when the professor made 4 different versions of the test. Blue copies, pink copies, green copies, and yellow copies. Each color represented a different version of the exam. Bradley had a pink version, while my co-worker had a blue version. He said Bradley copied nearly ever answer off of his exam. He still laughs about it because there was no way Bradley passed that exam.

 

With that said, I don't know why anyone would be surprised by this. I came to terms a long time ago that UK athletes were there for sports first, and academics were the least of their concerns for most. There are plenty of ignorant people who get degrees every year. I am amazed by some of the people I have worked with because I have no idea how anyone could have possibly given them a degree. I've worked with some people who didn't even deserve a high school diploma, yet they somehow have a bachelor's.

 

I will also add that I've seen way more "regular" student cheating, than student athletes.

On a serious note, were you close enough to see for sure that she was giving them the test answers and not something else? Could they have possibly been finished with the test, and she was just going over the answers so they could see how they did on the test? Where was the professor, or his/her assistant?

I think you are over reacting here. Yeah cheating is bad but this is not being condoned or encouraged by the athletic department or the University. It sounds to me like a girl who wants attention from the players. I'd say it is just people cheating and reflects on them as individuals but it doesn't matter that they are players. In other words would you be this upset to see regular joe tuition student cheating? If so your anger is justified but this has nothing to do with them being on the basketball team they are just cheating college students.

The athletes still had their test on their desk and she would say something and they would bubble in an answer. The professor and assistant were both in the front of the classroom taking up the exams from the students that were finished. So there was much clatter and movement going on as everyone was finishing, this was the perfect time for them to get the answers. There is well over 50 students in the class so I'm not sure why they weren't walking around the classroom.

Yes I would be just as upset if it wasn't an athlete. If someone who doesn't put any hard work into something and then comes out doing better than someone that did put the time and work into it, that angers me greatly. I don't know how it wouldn't make someone mad. I agree with what you said about the girl, and this was the only way she could get any attention from them, that is for sure.
