Which is one of the reasons why Highlands may not be a 4A size school when the KHSAA re-aligns. New schools opening and schools growing faster than Highlands may mean Highlands is a 3A size school when the KHSAA next looks at re-alignment. If that is the case and if the KHSAA still permits geographically isolated teams to move up, my guess is that the KHSAA will not allow Highlands to move up to 5A, but will only allow them to move up to 4A and be in a district with CovCath, Holmes, and possibly Scott (if they are a 4A size school). If Scott isn't a 4A size school, my guess is that Pendleton County would be the 4th team in the district unless there is another 4A school closer. In any event, if I was a betting man, and I am not, I'd bet that Highlands is in 4A after the next realignment. Of course the KHSAA could mess up that bet if Highlands is a 3A size school and the KHSAA no longer permits teams to move up. That would be a huge mistake by the KHSAA. Is there likely to be another 3A size school in all of N. Ky after the next re-alignment?

Teams are winning some of the smaller classes that wouldn't even be there if ALL teams played in their class(possibly).

I believe Ashland is one of the smallest 5A schools in terms of enrollment. It is my understanding that the Tomcats will be playing in 4A in 2011.

 

Painter I don't know how to ask this without sounding sarcastic. And believe me I'm not meaning to. But doesn't somebody have to be the smallest. Or is their such a large margin between the bottom of the 5A schools and Ashland. And would it be benificial for the Football team to be in class 4A. I know HHS is a big big factor. But who would you end up playing in 4A Lawrence, Greenup, Rowan Co.. What about the playoffs. Wouldn't it be Bell Co. and Boyle Co.?

There are no teams playing down. So there are no teams taking championships from smaller teams who would otherwise win them. When there are too few nearby schools to create a district in an area, teams are allowed to play up into a more difficult class. Some are more willing than others to take on that challenge.

Teams are not allowed to play down, so no giants are dropping down and robbing the smaller schools of a title.

 

Teams are primarily allowed to play up because they are geographically isolated from other schools in the class they should fit in. The primary intention is to avoid killing a few selected schools with horrible travel costs. As I understand it, that's the primary reason HHS was allowed to jump up two classes to 5A.

 

But with several NKY teams apparently moving to 4A, that means that 4A would now be a legitimate option for HHS, so the KHSAA might allow them to continue playing up, but only one class up.

Playing devil's advocate, if I'm a coach at John Hardin or Bowling Green or Dixie, I could not care less about a team's geographic isolation if it puts a powerhouse team in my playoff bracket. The fact that said school may be smaller in size really doesn't concern me. I'd be wondering how many miles of travel does it take to be considered geographically isolated. It is written down somewhere and I missed it? Who is making the decisions about who is allowed to play up due geographic isolation and who is not allowed? And the geographic isolation problem sure didn't seem to concern a team that was formerly in the NKY 5A district who got out as quick as they could to play in a geographically spread out district.

Don't you mean 4A?

 

If Dixie is moved up to 6A, it makes no sense for HHS and or CovCath to stay in 5A with Homes already being in 4A! Add in the possibility of Scott moving down to 4A also and you have the old 5A (sans Dixie) and all within less than a 10 mile easy radius of each other!
