I totally disagree it is natural to relax after you come out fired up and within a few minutes you are up 34-6 I think the kids thought it was over at that point and I did too.The St.X offense was as vanilla as it could get but they did not have to get fancy. Road trip!

Listened to some of it on the radio. Sounded like it was an exciting game.

This game was what I feared for Simon Kenton. I had confidence they would get their points but was concerned about their defense. The SK offense is as good as any in the state. Congrats on a great season to the Pioneers. Next season is going to be interesting to see. Can the success continue after Miles and Hansel? The Pioneers need to work harder this off season than they ever have to continue the success of the last two years.

I think when Miles was in St. Xavier kept him in check. I know he went out in the third but when he was in he was a threat yes, but St. Xavier kept most his runs under his average and stuffed him on several plays.

 

What impressed me so was the quarterback Lawrence. He was tough and slippery. He could run as well as any one and spot on in the short passing game. One very good football player. If Simon Kenton has a decent line in front of him next year I fear we will be seeing the Pioneers again next year.

 

The other player I was impressed with was number 74. What is his name? I hope he is a senior. That young man is a beast on the offensive line. I was so impressed by his play I made it a point to let him know it when he came off the field at the end of the game. As a matter of fact there were several St. Xavier fans letting the Simon Kenton players know that they played a great game when they came of the field. Lawrence ran behind 74 all night successfully. On defense he did not make many takles but was a strong load to move. Does he have any college offers? Great lineman.

 

I predicted a 14 point game. It just happened a little differnt than I had thought it would.

 

You have my respect Simon Kenton. By the way you had it before the game. Making the state championship game the prior year and the tough performance you put in in this regional final should earn alot of respect. But in the end all that matters is do you and your fans have respect for yourselves. By your performance last night and the turn out and backing shown by your fans, I would say you do.

I will take that vanilla all day long. You had two backs with over 100 yards and a third with over 90.

 

There passing game is not great. It is good. Ask Ryle. It was not needed last night. This reduced the risk of turnovers. St. Xavier had only one on an uncharacteristic fumble. Simon Kenton I believe had three. The turnovers for both teams were costly to each.

 

Another point to St. Xavier's running game last night. They used the sweep sparingly. Most sweeps they ran actually came out of the wishbone. They just rand the inside and outside veer the biggest part of the game and blocked for it execptionally well.

St.X never ran from the I formation one time all night which a big part of the O also very little was run out of shotgun which is a huge part, no screens etc. They were very vanilla because they did not have to do anything else.

The stadium at X is awesome! The tiger on the way in one word........WOW! Alan60's avatar does not do it justice.

 

The fence on the way in with the "X" in the capstone on the brick fence pillars is cool!

In response to the X defense being gassed, that is likely due to the fact that the X offense ran only 5 plays in the 3rd quarter (SK controlled the 3rd Qtr TOP). The X defense shuffled players regularly in the 3rd in certain downs and distances. Looked like Hall may have been less than 100% for the second half as well.

 

The Pass Intereference call was very Questionable BUT again, it did not decide the outcome of the game, it was very timely for X though.

 

The number of first downs X earned in the first half is irrelevant because they broke several long runs (3 for scores) That Hayden(?) kid was very tough and quick on the cut. St. X got away from the sweep after McMurray scored and did not really come back to it until later in the game (short yardage or goal line) out of the Bone. Also, the short KOs by SK sure gave X the short field most of the night, St. X put Neal (#3) in the second line and he returned a couple. The opening KO was costly as the first TD came on the very next play (first offensive play from scrimmage) on McMurray's sweep.

 

Again, I was surprised that X got away from the sweep and relied on the veer for most of the game (no threat of QB running the ball and no pitch), I thought their speed off the edge was very much a factor early on. Buehner's lack of mobility was an obvious plus for SK. The SK defense would have had fits trying to contain him as well as McMurray, Montano, Hayden (?) and Neal (later in the game when Neal carried a few times).

 

Also, Mile Simpson was starting to reel off runs of 10-15 yards in the third quarter BUT his exit from the game came very late in the 3rd! The team rallied to "pick up the slack". VERY IMPRESSIVE! The play he got injured on (Jet Sweep) to the St. X sideline was a very hard tackle at the knees, I hope the kid is okay! He would have had an impact in the fourth I think we can all agree to that, he does get stronger as the game wears on!

 

The real change of the game came when St. X got the ball back late in the second quarter (2:19) on about their own 25 yard line. First play was a sprint pass to the SK sideline resulting in an incomplete pass (clock stoppage), second play a dive play, then 3rd down another incomplete pass and time left on the clock. Ensuing punt is returned up the SK sideline to the X 30 or so. Subsequent SK touchdown going into the locker room before halftime.

 

All in all, the game started off like I expected then some opportunities X gave to SK and they took advantage of them. Also, the fight in the SK team was most impressive as they NEVER showed signe of giving in after falling behind 34-7. Alot of confidence and leadership by those guys on both sides of the ball. Held X to 14 points and outplaying them in the 2nd half!

Our defense stunk as opposition receivers ran wide open all evening collecting four (4) touchdown pass receptions. The only chance our secondary had to stop Simon Kenton's air attack was fair catching ill-advised hail mary passes. On top of this, the Pioneer QB and RB penetrated our gassed front seven like water running through a sieve, accumulating massive rushing yardage. :puke:

 

Our special teams allowed an extrapoint to be deflected and missed, and gave up a monstrous punt return, setting up a momentum changing TD late in the 1st half. :idunno:

 

On offense, the few passes that we threw were far off the mark. Moreover, for most of the evening, our rushing attack was totally unimaginative and only able to run three plays: inside veer, outside veer, and counter scissors. :isurrender:

 

Whoa, it looks like another one of those years. :ohbrother:

 

Wait a minute....despite all this we managed to beat an outstanding 6A team by 14 points....how could that happen??....it's on to Greenwood....three down and two to go Tigers!! :clap: :thumb: :clap:

Just want to add to the respect for Simon Kenton. Great team, fantastic fan turnout. And Kudos to the Tigers' fans - most noise I have heard all season. A really fun game that always felt close.
