Dave Brossart and his staff received quite a bit of criticism on here and Dave Wirth has received quite a bit of love. I have no attachment to either, but on the field 2009 Cov. Cath. results were almost identical to 2008 results. In fact it could be argued that in 2008 the schedule was more difficult.

2009team was a better overall football team.

The 09 team would beat the 08 team 6 to 7 out 10.

I was talking with a group of CovCath fans inculding parents from the 08 team, about who from the 08 team would we like have back. We came up with 3 kids, VanSant, Deters, and Hearn.

The 09 team had great senior leadership that show up in the no quit play on the field.

The 08 team would have lost Dixie being down by 14, but 09 did there jobs and won the game.The CovCath QB played the first two games with a seperated shoulder, which did have an affected on the out come of the game.I believe that if CovCath plays LexCath in week 4 or 5 they would win.

If you would compare the general feelings of parents and palyers after both Johnson Centeral games, the 08 game was one of no hope and anger. After the 09 game, there was disappointment but hope and can not wait for next year.

No there is no comparasion between the two teams.

To be quite honest, the different receptions given to the coaches had a good bit to do with personality. But besides that, to be a part of a community like Cov Cath, there are a lot of requirements of a coach well beyond their win/loss record. Dave Wirth has done a great job of bringing together the students at Cov Cath, players and non-players alike, and getting them to once again rally around their football team.

 

Lynn Ray left some large shoes to be filled when he retired as head coach after the 2004 season, and it took Cov Cath until now to find the right man to fill those shoes. I have no ill-will towards the two coaches who came and went between Ray and Wirth, but to speak frankly of Rodenberg, Brossart, and Wirth - Wirth is simply the best man for the job.

 

I also say that with records in mind. I know that in two seasons, Rodenberg gave us another state championship trophy. I know that Brossart took the program from state championship form to a 5-7 record, albeit nearly all of the previous year's starters had graduated. He then followed it up with another 5-7 season. I know that Wirth only improved from 5-7 to 6-6.

 

However, Coach Wirth has shown the Cov Cath community how excited he could get our young men about their football program. Furthermore, he is working daily to impress on them the principles of faith, service, and responsibility that we, as Catholics, are concerned with much more than the record of our team.

There is no good to come out of this thread. It can only make the CCH community look bad.

 

Both staffs did what they could do. Last year's team won one more game than people expected.

... from an outsider's perspective it seems pretty clear that the Covington Catholic community is more positive and upbeat about the Colonels' football program now than they were during the last few years. I suspect that this change in mindset will pay dividends for their football program in the upcoming years. :thumb:

The CovCath football program is far better off with Wirth. Not many people were ever really happy with Brossart, inside and out, which is exactly what led to his "resigning." He was not fit for the job and that's all that should be said about it. :thumb:

Well said. I think this is one of those situations that you have to be close to the program to understand. You can't look at wins and losses and try to evaluate. As Clyde said, time to move forward for everyone.

I say we add a poll to close this thread.

But if you do look at wins and losses there is very little difference.

 

From last year to this year that would be a fair statement. Check back next year and the year after and five years from now..and if you take into consideration what this group of kids were expected to do it was a huge turnaround in the first year. Plus, if you only judge a program by Wins and Losses you have a pretty distorted view of what High School sports is all about.

I thought the same thing when I read that post. Who would the CCH fans take at QB between Erpenbeck and Isler? I know Isler got hurt last year but I think he is the better passer and Erpenbeck the better runner. So who would start between those two?
