6th grade Camels looked pretty good last night. I did not get a chance to stay and watch the older boys. Coach is still mixing up rotations but they have a solid core of players. Matt Wilson led the Camels with 16 and Trent McGovney had 12 with 6-7 assists. Should be a good game at Conner tonight.

 

Conner 6th handled the Camels easily last weekend in a scrimmage once the Camels went to the bench. It should be interesting to see how the coach makes adjustments now that he has had a few weeks to evaluate his team.

Walton Verona 6th and 7th grade boys beat Woodland last night...I don't remember the scores...Not sure about the 8th grade game...had to leave...

Congrats to the Blessed Sacrament Eagles for traveling to Fort Thomas and sweeping the Bluebirds.

 

The 6th grade Eagles shared the ball very well. Several pass and cut baskets. HMS will need to figure out a rotation that will work. Team is 1 week out of tryouts and will definetly improve throughout the season.

 

The 7th grade game was a nail biter. The Eagles played zone the entire game and extended to the 3 point line. HMS did not use the middle of the floor nor did the move much on offense. The boys were content to pass around the perimeter and hope to get an open look for three. Drake Ficke is a nice big man for the Eagles. Griffin Urlage played well for the Birds.

 

HMS 8th jumped out to an early lead and let it get away. Tough to win at the 8th grade level if you can only socre 29 points.

The CC/Conner 8th should be a good one. CC coming off a very nice 14 point win vs. IHM, that's against a very nice IHM team. Lots of talent on the floor tonight for this one.

6th grade lost 44-25 I believe. Score was 20-16 at half and early third quarter blitz by Blessed Sacrament put it away. Birds made a little run to cut it to 9 but simply ran out of gas.

 

7th grade game was close all the way with Highlands losing by 3. 7th grade team was very perimeter oriented and thus if shots are not falling can make for a difficult night.

 

I have heard that the 7th grade doesnt have any bigs and rely on guard play. Has the 6th grade found a point guard yet?

In 7th grade action Ockerman beat Turkeyfoot by about 14. Turkeyfoot is pretty good but the press gave them a lot of problems. Turkeyfoot has a real nice center but he got a T after getting a couple of quick fouls (Stanley kept taking him to the basket and he couldn't keep up).

 

A note on Beechwood/Ockerman from the night before. I didn't think Beechwood was scrappy at all. I thought it was a typical Beechwood basketball team. They had some nice athletes but they played a lot more like a football team on the basketball court than a basketball team. And, when Ockerman pressed Beechwood turned the ball over a solid four out of five times. It was zero contest.

Great game tonight in the 7th grade matchup with Conner and Campbell Co. Conner hit a late three with about 6 seconds on the clock to tie it, and then fouled on the inbounds pass by CC. CC won it at the line by 1. Two really good teams. CC 7th has some really nice bigs and some quick guards.

I only saw the 2nd half of the 7th grade Conner v. Campbell Co, but this was one of the most exciting middle school basketball games I've seen in 3 years. #3 from Conner kept hitting big shot after big shot.

 

The 8th grade game got out of hand quickly. 72 - 30 was the final. Campbell Co was 2 totally different teams from Monday night to Tuesday night.

Very possible but it looked more to me like Stanley realized he had a matchup advantage and did what a good basketball player does.

I'm sure Stanley dominated! He is very fun to watch and very few, if any, are able to contain him at that age.
