And curiously, do other countries show any respect to our leader with formal gestures like this? If the bow is a show of respect, did the Emperor bow to Obama? In my best Ben Stein voice, Anyone? November 18, 200916 yr Having worked for a Japanese company the past 18 years I learned that the bow is a sign of respect. The lower the bow the more respect. Submission, the people of Japan are laughing at him.
November 18, 200916 yr Am I alone in here? Reviewing the sequence - it looks like he confused them with a simultanious bow and handshake. The emperor reached out to shake hands then Obama went into a deep, very quick bow. The emperor did a quick bow probably between the 1 - 2 scale above. But BHO was already off to shake hands and bow to the emperess. The whole sequence looks hurried and rushed. It looks like he is not prepped well by his staff for these events. The bow is so quick it clearly not a sign of remorse or apology - its just an awkward bow and of course the still camera caught it at its deepest point. But in real time video he does not linger or slowly bow as if to make a subliminal point. This 'issue' is clearly just poor protocol training - or poor execution on his part.

It's just that it makes him look foolish. I agree, his staff has not prepped him properly, then again I'm not sure they know themselves.

Or is this something that "we" are blowing up to magnificant proportions on our own?According to ABC News, the Kyodo News – Japan’s equivalent of the Associated Press – had declined to publish and propagate the photo of the President of the United States bowing before Emperor Akihito and instead decided to use a photo of the less humiliating nod-and-shake Obama offered to the Empress. You can gather your own opinions from that.
