180 yards offense by the opponent has to be close to a season low for Dixie. Nice job.

 

Based on the khsaa stats, I believe it is a season low. The next lowest was NCC, which was around 220 yards. I guess they finally tackled.

Good Job Dixie. I thought that Ashland would win this one playing at home.

A very good example of the "due" theory. Dixie was over-"due." Ashland was not.

I didn't think that Ashland could hold Dixie to 7 points.

ASHLAND — Dixie Heights saved perhaps its best game for the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs.

 

The Colonels stonewalled Ashland’s usually potent running game and the fifth-ranked Tomcats matched their regular-season total with six turnovers in a 41-14 defeat Friday night at Putnam Stadium.

 

“I think we’ve been looking for that all year,’’ said Dixie Heights coach Tom Spritzky, whose team came in with a 4-6 record. “We’ve been so up and down. We’ve had injuries, turned the ball over and made silly penalties. Tonight, things came together.’’

 

Senior quarterback Ryan Wilson threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, while the Colonels’ defense stymied Ashland for minus eight yards on the ground.

Well...when a 4-6 team destroys a 9-1 team by 27 points on their home field, I guess that says all anyone needs to know about the difference between Northern Kentucky football and Northeastern Kentucky football. Ashland had a good season, but having to face the district they have to face in the playoffs has to be frustrating.

 

Remember also that Cov Holmes who is the #1 seed in their 4A district (after dropping down to 4A from 5A this year) would have been the NKy 5A fourth seeded team and the way they are playing, Holmes just might have upset JC last night.

 

I also wonder why NKy always seems to play EKy and why the KHSAA doesn't rotate the playing of districts from year to year!

Offensive stats weren't as big as I had expected, but with the turnovers, maybe they had a short field to work with most of the night.

 

The short field came on both of Ashlands scores. Dixie turned the ball over twice inside the 20. One on a muffed punt and the other on a fumble. Ashlands scoring drives had a combined total of 30-35 yards. Other than a few passes Ashland didn't move the ball.

I give Ashland's coach Leon Hart credit for saying in his postgame radio interview that Dixie was simply bigger, stronger, and faster.

 

Once again, though, I love listening to Ashland's radio guys!!! I've questioned some of their antics in the past, but they do describe the game very well and their extreme homerism is entertaining when taken for what it is.

 

:thumb: If you take it the the way I do as an outsider. You can laugh at about 90% of what they say. It can be entertaining. As good as the comedy station. Or you can go at it like you want to throw the radio down and stomp on it. We were up in the stands of the Ram game listening to them on a device. We were all laughing. They had us almost falling off the bleachers. They are a little bias!!

When HHS and CovCath move back down to where they are suppose to play (4A) and Dixie due to growth moves up to 6A, there will be no one happier in the Commonwealth, than the coaches from 5A EKy!

I have to eat a little crow as well. Thought this one would be closer. Alot of people don't realize how tough the NKY districts are unless you've experienced playing them on a regular basis. Ask Raceland and Russell about NCC, Beechwood, & Highlands throughout the mid to late 80's. Always the toughest bracket to go through.

Congratulations to Dixie, they apparently played a great game and beat a good team in doing so. Good luck to Dixie next week.

 

Ashland, congratulations on a great season, many accomplishments to be proud of.

The Dixie defense should get the "defensive player of the game" for stopping the run that everyone expected from Ashland. The remaining defensive players did a very good job also, but the line needs some recognition from time to time. They had a lot of pressure to perform and they did an excellent job this game.
