Although I think I am going to put it in my will that I will have to be stuffed and mounted when I die and that one of my children will have to keep my body on display in their living room in order to receive their inheritance.

 

I am picturing what those children would DO with your body: poses, decorations, clothing choices.

Personally, I think it's awesome! I'm all about making my funeral as cheap as possible. I'll be dead. What do I care about whether my remains are in something grandiose? I've already told my kids to cremate me. Now, I can just buy a cheap jug from Wal-Mart and at least it'll be more formal than the milk jug I've been saving for just that purpose.

I have no problem with cheap. I'm sure I'll be cremated as well. I just don't want to be stuck in something from Wal-Mart!

How long do you have to go to Mortuary school? What all does it teach or prepare you to do? Do you do the emballment, and all of the planning done with a funeral?

 

The program here in Jeffersonville, Indiana (right across the river from L'Ville), is a year and a half program. I get to do it in one year since I transferred from a community college and had enough credits. I came in as a Junior and I get to graduate in less than 5 months.

 

We have to perform 15 embalming's before we can graduate from the college. The school has contracts with funeral homes throughout Louisville and a couple in southern Indiana (New Albany). If one of those establishments "get a body", they will call the school and 3 or 4 people will go and do hands-on embalming. We obviously have "embalming classes" at school to prepare us for the hands on part.

 

Another class we have is called 'Restorative Art'. We learn how and what to do if a deceased is in need of facial reconstruction. If they lose a nose or ear, etc and it's possible to make a fake one and attach it, then it will be done. The president of our school, John Braboy, is also our restorative art teacher and one of best at what he does.

We were talking about this in class the other day (I go to Mortuary school). This will no doubt hurt the funeral homes financailly in some places but other places, like the super small appalachian town I live & work in, it won't hurt a bit.
