SK was 1/3 and Highlands was 3/4 on two points conversions and it made a difference at the end when SK needed two scores instead of one to tie.

Congratulations to the Birds for their big victory over a very good SK team. Donovan McCoy was the player of the game. Here are his stats and they are very impressive.

 

7-14 passing for 145 yrds 1 TD (68 yard scoring strike to Colin Seidle)

21 carries for 153 yrd rushing 3 TD's and ran in 3 two point conversions.

 

He made several tackles on defense also and IMO is the best freshman football player in NKY.

 

Game was tied at 14 at halftime. The Pioneers were led by the rushing of Jarred Bowling and the QB play of Jarrod Swanson. Swanson connected with Dylan Harris for a 47 yrd TD in the first half and Bowling rushed for a TD. The Bird TD's came on the pass from McCoy to Seidle and Mcoy on a rushing TD.

 

The key to the 2nd half IMO was the long kickoff return to start the 2nd half by Jac Collinsworth who was clearly not playing at 100%. Apparently the Birds got a delay of game penalty to start the 2nd half and the Pioneers kicked off from the Bird 45. Collinsworth scooped up the kick and sprinted the right side into Pioneer territory to their 45. McCoy would later break 3 tackles and sprint 35 yrds for a score.

 

Key defensive players for the Birds were Reid Schroder, Blake Schutte, Brandon Lawry, Tyler Schweitzer and Donovan Mccoy. Some of SK's defensive stars were #41 Landrum, #44 Kevin Cooper, #51 Hunter Gregory.

 

Birds were playing without 2 starters Gabe Schultz and Jihad Henderson and the kids filling in did a great job. Tyler Robinson, Reid Schroder, Nick True are a few that stepped up.

Swanson for SK is the real deal. He is a nice looking athlete. Swanson and McCoy were 90% of the offense for their respective teams..If McCoy hits the weights hard this off season I can see him being one heck of a linebacker..:ylsuper:

Great to see this young man step up as an 8th grader. His Daddy was a Dandy at Campbell County back in the day

Kinda interesting that these two programs are considered the best in NKY this year(nothing new for Highlands) and their programs are playing each other in the FROSH Chmapionship game, I'd say SK has a player (Simpson)that's certainly helped them get the notority they have this year but perhaps they've got something going good in southern Kenton County.

Want to also give props to another player for the Birds and that is #11 Quentin Murray. He played a solid game on Defense but he made a very nice catch on a 3rd and 7 play early in the 3rd quarter. McCoy threw a nice ball about 20 yrds down field and Murray made a nice grab and showed excellent concentration. This was huge because if they dont get the first down they most likely punt. After getting the first down they continued on and scored. It seemed to take the air out of the SK defense somewhat.
