NKY Frosh Basketball Chatter

From watching young Cameron Murphy play, I don't know how long he will be on Freshmen Basketball team this season. He is indeed a polished player for a Freshmen!

I've been coaching against watching Cameron for a few years. He has an outstanding jump shot and is very good going to the rim. I might be wrong here, but I think its his size that will keep him on the Freshman level. But this kid will be a very nice player.

Wondering if Nate Erpenbeck is related to Greg Erpenbeck of CovCath 2004 basketball fame...

Just curious is Cameron Stansberry related to the outstanding pitcher at Dixie?

Dan Schumate is the younger brother of CovCath pitcher/punter Adam Schumate and the Nephew of Beechwood Head Basketball Coach Schumate!

Is Cameron the son of Cas?

Cameron is solid and will be a very good freshman player. If he sticks with it, he'll be a very good varsity player in the future. But you're right, his size will hold him back until he matures.

Kes Murphy, yes.

I dont remember St. Pius being very strong at all last season. I do remember Ward who is a streaky shooter but not remembering the Murphy boy. Has he dramatically improved his game or something?

Im looking forward to the game between the Birds and the Colonels. I see several names on CovCath's roster who played AAU ball for the Old Spice/Red Zone and the Flash. I am also assuming they have some St. Joe Crescent kids. Highlands has 6 kids with a ton of AAU experience as well. Witte,McCoy,Turner,Christian all have played for the NKY Warriors over past 4 years and they have made some nice runs in the State Tourney. Hinkel has played with the Shining Stars the past couple years and Nick True the 6'4 8th grader was a starter on this past summer's Tar Heel team that got a Top 10 finish in the National Tourney.

St Pius was not strong last year at all, Murphy was hurt early and they never really did much.

The team is:

4 Pius

4 Blessed Sac

3 St Joes

1 IHM

1 St Paul

1 St Henry

No Eggbers?

I agree Cameron is a player, but he will be on the frosh team all year. He will get the playing time he needs there. Riedinger will be running the show for JV this year, and unless something happens to him, there would not be the PT for Cam on JV.

Yes

Well, not the son of Cas, but is the son of Kes :D

It takes a pretty special player (physically & mentally) to skip freshman ball at Covington Catholic, particularly if you're a guard.

I think the last true guards to do it were Todd Jacobs & Nestheide. I think TJ even started out on the frosh level & ended up getting to dress varsity by the end of the year.

Aside from Cam being hurt for much of last year for Pius and not dressing, the other three boys on this team from Pius did not play for the school team in 7th grade. I think that is part iof the reason Pius really struggled last year. There did not appear to be too much team chemistry, and it was the first year that they boys had played together. As such, they had very little practice time, as there are so many games. That is one of my major issues I have with the programs such as Pius where they play the kids in both the public school league and parochial school league. Throw in the tournaments they play in, and with 4 or 5 games a week, there is no time for practice. Really hurts them in my opinion, unless you have a team like went thru there a few years back (Thelen, Maschinot, Schult, Riedinger, Hudepohl, Broering, etc) They had played together for so many years, the lack of practice did not hurt them as much.

ok, I do remember someone telling me that St. Pius didnt have many of their better players come out for the school team. I do remember that group with Thelen and Riedinger as they were a very good team.

Where did Bir/Pauley/shumate and erpenbeck go to grade school?

I know Erpenbeck went to Pius, I think someone told me Bir went to IHM, but am not sure. As for Pauley and Shumate I would guess Blessed Sacament or St Joes but that is a pure guess

Highlands like I mentioned earlier in the thread is short on numbers but will have a very solid 6 kids. They have a lot of length and athleticism. Witte and Turner will handle the guard duties and they can get up and down the floor very well while also guarding the best offensive players on the opposing team. Collinsworth will probably play the 3 spot and he can jump out of the gym and is strong taking the ball to the rack. McCoy is a very strong lefthander who can score and jump as well. Christian is Mr. INtangible as he does a lot of the grunt work playing great post defense and rebounding the ball well. Nick True is probably the most improved player in the program as he has grown a couple inches and really improved his aggressiveness. He should play out the Frosh season but I wouldnt be surprised to see him possibly dressing JV also.

The JV team probably wont have a true (no pun intended) center. I would think that they also will have a lot of athletic kids running up and down the floor and no real Bigs. I am hearing that Jack Stewart the 6'6 junior will likely fill in at the Center spot on Varsity until Grubbs gets there.

Highlands Frosh Roster

Luke Turner 6'0

Nick True 6'4 (8th Grader)

Donovan McCoy 5'11

David Christian 6'1

Bailey Witte 5'10

Jac Collinsworth 6'1

Karl Hinkel 5'4

Jake Gronotte 6'1

Zac Smith 6'2

Joe Hornback 5'7

Zac Carter 5'8

When I listened to the Covington Catholic-Highlands freshman football game on the CovCath network, they were saying he was 6'6", not that it matters much.

That might be what the program says but I dont think so. I would say 6'4 or maybe 6'5 if he is lucky. With that said, his doctor said he will get to 6'9 before its all said and done. Whether that happens during HS or College only time will tell.

The scary thing is they have another kid on the team (Zac Smith) who is only 6'2 right now and he is predicted to get to 7 foot. I dont know the liklihood but if that happens your talking some twin towers.
