The problem has, and IMO, will continue to be the lack of in state talent compared to other states. Ask Spurrier, there is no doubt that he can coach, but his success at S.C. has been pretty moderate. Just not enough in state talent.

 

Though S.C. does have 3 teams in the top 100 in the nation at this time.

Compare that to Texas, Florida, Ohio, Georgia, and California. Texas has 5 in the top 25, Florida 3 (Rivals). S.C., like Kentucky, does not have the population to produce at that talent level on a consistent basis.

 

It still comes down to recruiting, though.

 

Though Alabama's population is comparable to Kentucky's, only 52% of UA's roster is from Alabama. Their skilled positions are dominated by out-of-state players, McElroy (TX), Ingram (MI), Peek (FL). The same goes for other successful programs in states short of population.

 

It may come down to budget. What is Brooks and company allotted in the way of money and resources for recruiting?

I think a lot more was expected from Boyd, so the dissapointment in both their games is probably pretty equal, at least in my mind.

His accuracy was comparable to JaMarcus Russell. I don't know how many times I saw him throw it to a guy's feet....that's if it didn't hit the ground and skip to the receiver.

Unless I'm mistaken, he wasn't being kept around as a QB. That might be one reason. Nobody doubts Boyd's athleticism, just his ability to play QB.

It was said earlier in the thread that both Mossakowski and Newton likely chose UK because they would have an opportunity to play a lot earlier in their careers by going to UK as opposed to somewhere bigger. The longer Brooks sticks with Hartline, the less likely that will happen, obviously. And if those guys came here expecting to play right away, they're possibly fuming right now watching Hartline stink it up, increasing the likelihood one or both transfers.

 

If they both redshirt they will still be freshmen next season. Brooks is on record that Hartline is the quarterback now because he give UK the best chance to win right now. He wanted to play one of the freshmen this season this season and redshirt the other but since Mossakowski had surgery only Newton was left to choose from and Brooks doesn't seem to feel that he's ready yet. There's been no indication that either quarterback is considering transferring. For all of Shane's shortcoming as a QB, he was pretty athletic.

Why doesn't UK put more effort into the building up of our middle school and high school programs. Since there is an obvious disadvantage from our home recruiting base and a team like Florida's. Why not work on getting more kids interested in football and more developed in the game. Its nowhere near the same level but when Chuck Smith was the coach at Boyle all those years he played a huge role in rebuilding interest in the middle school programs and even in pee wee football. It sounds kind of silly but its the same thing just on a smaller scale.

Pretty good idea. I still don't think the players produced in KY are on par athletically with many of the "football" states. That's something that just probably isn't going to change.
