Who Will Be UofL's Next Football Coach

Featured Replies

I don't think that they can get Whittingham or Peterson. Sure U of L is in the Big East, but alot of these Big East teams get no love. I think that Utah and Boise are just as close to playing in a title game as most Big East teams. U of L would be a lateral move, I don't know what Boise can offer, but Utah can probably offer about what U of L would, they made a nice pitch to keep Urban, but UF was willing to give top dollar and promise new facilities. JMO though.

With the Malzahn thing: First off, I'm probably the biggest Malzahn fan on this board. But, before anyone says they want him as a HC, they need to check out his book. He is simply offensive minded and has no problem saying that. So I think that would leave U of L as a smaller, less skilled version of Texas Tech, albeit they wouldn't be as passy happy. He's only been in the college game 4 years, is he really ready to be a Head Coach in a BCS conference? I don't know. U of L would be a lot more fun to watch, but who knows what the results would be.

Strong is a great possibility, IMO. That looks like a likely fit if U of L decides to go another route.

No way for Gruden, IMO. From an NFL Head Coach to U of L football? I could only see him taking something like Notre Dame at the collge level. Again, JMO though.

It's a mid-level BCS school. Peterson and Whittingham will get BCS jobs soon, they don't need a job like U of L. Malzahn would probably take it. Strong would probably take it if the money was right. Just my $ .02.

It's about to get ugly for Malzahn. They are about to hit some real games and I see them finishing 2-5 after the 5-0 start. for a 7-5 season and 5th place in the SEC West.

For those asking why Peterson or Whittingham would leave to come to UofL. It's real simple. BCS and $$$.

The Big East is the easist path to a BCS game/shot at a title. A non BCS school is never going to get a title shot. Utah proved that last year.

Money is the biggest reason. Peterson is making $900,000 per year right now. Compared to Kragthorpe's $1,450,000 (that's right, million). Whittingham only makes 700K. UofL can pay much more money and provide things the other two can't. Peterson may not leave due to personal reasons, as mentioned in the past though. Just saying UofL can pay big bucks to a coach...

what coaches make

I understand that both coaches could make more at Louisville, but at this point it's not even a lateral move for Petersen and Whittingham. Why would they leave Boise for Louisville when they are going to be leading candidates for jobs far better than a mid-level BCS school.

HT, I think he's going to do very well this season. Auburn isn't an elite team, but I think they'll finish above some teams that they're not suppose to. Malzahn's offense looks kind of weird on the field, but it's very fundamentally sound, IMO, especially after you take out the tempo at which he calls plays. Auburn is going to move the ball on everyone. 26 on UT is no easy task.

I don't think he'll be a great HC, but he's about as good as it gets as an OC. His teams always move the ball, no matter what they did the year before.

Good point, but it wouldn't hurt to offer. Just like it don't hurt to dream.

The current Head Coach isn't exactly setting the world on fire with anything. At least we would have an offense with Malzahn.:isurrender:

Charlie Strong

I hear Bobby Bowden will be open at the end of the season......j/k...although he might want it if he hasn't passed Joe Pa for the most wins

Charlie Strong is the best option IMO. He's young, he's a great defensive mind and he could probably bring some of UF's coaching staff with him just as Dan Mullen did when he went to Mississippi State.

Here's the best options for UofL IMO. I'm not going to throw people like Petersen, Whittingham or Gruden, because I don't think they are in a position where it would be best for their career to coach at Louisville, for different reasons.

Charlie Strong, Defensive Coordinator, Florida: Comes from a great coaching tree, will more than likely bring some of his fellow coaches from UF with him, which would be a huge step up from the Kragthorpe administration. Solid recruiter and tied with Brett Venables from Oklahoma for the best Defensive Coordinator in the country.

Brent Venables, Defensive Coordinator, Oklahoma: Same with Venables, comes from a great coaching tree, and a great defensive mind.

Doc Holliday, Associate Head Coach, West Virginia: The brains behind the recruiting operation in Morgantown, Holliday also comes from the Urban Meyer coaching tree, as well as having ties with Rich Rodriguez. Holliday will be at a big Division 1 School before long, Louisville would be a great fit.

Chan Gailey, former head coach in D-1 and the NFL: Gailey is a good recruiter, has ties to the NFL and wasn't that bad at Georgia Tech, it just kind of fell apart on him towards the end. But he did recruit Jonathan Dwyer, Calvin Johnson, Michael Johnson, Reggie Ball, Tashard Choice and Damarius Thomas.

It may be a stretch, but if the rumors coming from Tallahassee are true, Jimbo Fisher may not be Bowden's successor after all. Keep an eye out for Fisher and potentially Rick Trickett, offensive line coach from FSU.

Tommy Tubberville would be the best decision of all the former D-1 head coaches not coaching now. It'd be an interesting hire though, remember when Auburn sent that plane to Louisville to wine and dine Bobby Petrino to replace Tubberville before their perfect season in 2004?

I was chatting with a huge UL fan and he had a different tune regarding Krag.

If Jurich told him to clean house of the waste that Petrino left behind (I still think Jurich is very hypocritical in that regard, see him approving Lobster Willie), then Kragthorpe deserves at least another year...if indeed that is what Jurich asked of him.

However, there are a few things working against Kragthorpe:

1. Stadium expansion and they are going to need to put fannies in the seats. They aren't expanding to put more exits in. The present state of the program is toxic.

2. He has not gotten any sort of contract extension, and that hurts him recruiting wise and essentially is surfing the recruiting circles in lameduck mode.

In regards to a coach...if he were to be canned...I would not be bothered if I was a UL fan if Tuberville was the choice. He did a very good job at Ole Miss, took Auburn to an undefeated season and then things got a little stale.

I'd run from Karl Dorrell.

Fulmer's better days are behind him.

Malzhan...flavor of the day.

I agree, he's a great offensive mind, but you don't want a head coach that cares not for defense.

I was just stating the obvious with him. Like I said, I probably like Malzahn more than anyone (or at least as much as anyone), but he is most likely a work in progress when it comes to running a program. I think you'd see something similar to the UK teams under Mumme, though totally different offenses obviously. Offense would be king, U of L would beat the scrubs and lose to legit teams. Which is about the same, although U of L would score more points than they currently do.

I'm not going to re-hash all the things I've said before, but getting rid of Coach Krathorpe would be a HUGE mistake at this time.

I was all about keeping him around for this season and giving him a chance but I really just don't see it anymore. I don't see how a coaching change could hurt us at all right now unless Jurich rehires Cooper.

Putting aside a myriad of other things, how would changing coaches at this point improve things to the degree that many UL fans are clamoring for, with the speed at which they think it can/should be done?
