UK's Tobacco Ban

Featured Replies

I was reading the KY Kernel today and there was another article about this going in effect I think November 19th. Just wondering what some of the opinions were out there. I don't use tobacco, and I can understand how the smoking can create problems for those of us that don't smoke. But what I don't understand is what is the need to banning the smokeless tobacco, there is no second-hand chew or anything. Just like to hear from all of you out there.:thumb:

I do not smoke, dip, chew and I couldn't have stronger feelings against this ridiculous ban. There's no way its going to be effectively enforced. It is only going to cost the University a bunch of money, which they don't have, to put it in place. The only reason they are doing it is so they can have the title of "tobacco free." UK will be as tobacco free as it is alcohol free. Give me a break.

As a non-smoker, I like it.

There's nothing that I hate more than having someone smoke right next to me while I'm eating dinner and having a beer at happy hour.

Walk outside.

Second hand smoke might be an issue if you are inside a restaurant, but they are banning smoking outside.... OUTSIDE!

See my last post.

Walk outside.

Bars and restaurants in Lexington have been smoke free for a long time.

This is campus as a whole...even outside. It's completely ridiculous and a waste of time. The funny thing is, the way I read the ban, this would apply to the parking lots at Commonwealth too. That's going to be a pain in the hindquarters during tailgating.

As a non-smoker, I like it.

You already can't smoke inside in Lexington...That's not the point of this.

They are trying to ban tobacco products on campus, period. Inside or out.

As one of my friends was quoted in the Kernel, "I'll probably just go smoke in the bushes or something." He was later quoted saying, "They can pry my Marlboro's from my cold, dead hands."

I think this ban is ridiculous. I understand not wanting it INSIDE, but outside? As far as I know, there is no clean-air law in Kentucky. For goodness sake, at least let them smoke in designated smoking areas or something...some place non-smokers can avoid if they wish. I understand not allowing smoking in front of buildings, where non-smokers have to walk by to get through the door, but all over campus? Why can't UK adopt a policy like EKU's where they do not allow smoking within 25 feet of an entrance. EKU also provides plenty of enclosed smoking areas that are frequently used and welcomed in the winter months.

My only guess on banning smokeless tobacco is that they do not want it in class. There used to be several people in my classes at UK who would sit in the back and spit into bottles the whole time. Then at the end of class, some of them would leave the bottles laying around...I would assume, some of these are occasionally spilled as well.

I didn't even think about Commonwealth being smoke-free. This will be a serious issue come game day and if I had to guess, it's going to be nearly impossible to enforce a smoking ban on that many people.

I do not use any type of tobacco but all of my friends who smoke cigarettes are livid that this would even be considered. While sitting all day in their dorms all they want to do is hop outside for a moment and catch a cigarette but they won't be able to anymore in about a month and a half. I personally do not care but if I was in their situation I would wonder what is the big deal? And if you get caught do you just get a petty 10 dollar fine?

Will smokeless be banned from commonwealth as well?

Will smokeless be banned from commonwealth as well?

Yes.

Will smokeless be banned from commonwealth as well?
A disgusting habit !!!!
That is impossible to enforce.

It will be difficult to do it pro-actively. But if you report someone nearby using, then it could be easily enforced.
