How do we explain the shortagle of US citizens filling the high-paying high-demand positions in the engineering field? Do they not want a job? Do they not want the highest salary for college grads?

 

It would seem to indicate to me that we need to do something about the fields of math and science? It would seem to tell me that our current system is not working.

 

Am I wrong? Should we keep the math and science education as is?

 

Nope, I think we should take a lesson from the other countries and make it a big deal for kids to get to study upper level math and science. Quit mixing the riff-raff kids in with the ones who actually have a chance to go to engioneering school so that those kids can learn at a pace that challenges them and allows them to excel. The chaf that we don't separate from the wheat sours our crop.

I have never understood why some students are in Algebra 2 and Chemistry that have no desire to pursue those areas when they can be taught a trade that could benefit them for the rest of their lives when those subjects never will. At the same time there are a lot of students who need to be given an even greater opportunity to go beyond what is offered at high schools right now.

I have never understood why some students are in Algebra 2 and Chemistry that have no desire to pursue those areas when they can be taught a trade that could benefit them for the rest of their lives when those subjects never will. At the same time there are a lot of students who need to be given an even greater opportunity to go beyond what is offered at high schools right now.

 

I know what your intent is with your post (that we'd get more bang for our buck by providing students with the knowledge that is most directly beneficial for them) but don't think for a second that students that are not college bound don't gain from upper level science and math classes, such as Algebra and Chemistry. Additionally, sometimes it's not the knowledge that's most important, but the process required to dissect a problem and solve it.

So if they get 26 Bi-weekly checks like alot of Americans get, what would it hurt if they worked lets say 200 days, they still get paid 26 checks and have 2 months off in the summer.

Before we make big assumptions, I don't necessarily buy into the fact that all of these other countries are knocking our socks off on the test.

 

a. Often times, when you are testing American seniors on these math tests, you are testing 20 and 21 year students from other countries, the equivalent of college sophomore, at least.

 

b. Many of the math/science questions are asked in metric form, forcing Americans to not only do the math part but also make unfamiliar conversions

 

c. We generally test everyone, especially now in Kentucky, other places only test their top students

 

d. How does Shakespeare translate to japanese and chinese? Is it as hard/harder/simpler to understand.

 

I don't buy that we are that far behind in the first place, but it sure makes for good talking points.

 

a. Wrong. For example, the Program for International Student Assessment tests 15 year olds from around the world. The US was 24th.

 

b. Are they not teaching science using the metric system in Kentucky? If they're not, I feel sorry for the kids. I've been out of school many years, but I never took a college science course where the main measurement system was the US common units. It was always metrics.

 

c. Japan tests all students from grade 1 up, however the tests are intuitive not standardized. (Microsoft is moving this way for their certification testing.)

 

d. What does Shakespeare have to do with Math and Science? Last I checked, I've never used any Shakespeare to write a computer program.

So my time is not worth anymore, though you are asking me to increase my days, my work load, add more nights onto my schedule taking from my family as well. Remember your words the next time you want a raise from your employer. I hope he replies to you...we need you to work every weekend and maybe some nights, since you already get paid year round that should be payment enough. Most districts only pay teachers for 180 days of service and drag those payments out over 26 pay checks. Take what you would make in 180 days and spread it over 26 pay checks. Are you going to survive on that? Most of us have summer jobs so that we can pay into social security since the state does not afford us that option.

But it is soooooooooooo very policitally correct to say that those kids aren't special and every single cotton picking child in the country can learn JUST like those kids.

 

We wouldn't want anyone to feel that they are smart and feel better about themselves than some other child.

I get 12 checks. Once a month.

 

I am a salaried employee who has their yearly salary divided by 12.

When I was in the management program at JCPenney that is basically the same way I got paid there.

I don't know if I follow your point. Don't all high schools have different levels of math? Really smart kids take Honors/AP, average kids take regular math, kids that struggle take "general" math?

 

I've never heard of a school that mixes their top math students with their bottom math students.

It's twofold.

 

One the gifted and talented can't really be pushed and challenged because that would mean that not every kid is learning at the same level.

 

Two, those students who need more of the basics because they don't have a grasp of them are not getting that because we have to shove them into the same cookie cutter that the politicians want.
