One of the reasons for tenure was many years ago when principals used to look to get rid of a teacher who a) they wanted rid of for personal reason; b) they wanted a family member/friend in that place.

 

Good teachers were being replaced who had been in districts for awhile for family reasons. That is one of the reasons that the nepotism rules went into effect with KERA.

It seems I remember that there was an elementary school in EKY that almost every single member of that school's staff was from one family except for 4-5.

 

It wasn't about hiring and keeping the good teachers but providing jobs for the family.

 

Teachers now have the protection to stand up and fight for what is best for the kids without the fear of reprisal by losing their job.

 

Now some are going to quickly jump in and say well I don't have that protection.

 

In your case, your supervisor is a representative of the OWNER of the company. The principal is not the OWNER of the school and does not have the same personal assets invested the company that would give him the right to do what he pleases.

 

 

That law had affect on very, very few people. It also kept me out of a job for 6 years........

I have never understood why some students are in Algebra 2 and Chemistry that have no desire to pursue those areas when they can be taught a trade that could benefit them for the rest of their lives when those subjects never will. At the same time there are a lot of students who need to be given an even greater opportunity to go beyond what is offered at high schools right now.

 

How does a young man who's dream in life is to be a farmer or mechanic or construction worker benefit from Chemistry? I could understand maybe a little big of Algebra, but I can't see them benefitting beyond Algebra 1.

In 14 years of teaching, I have yet to see tenure cause a teacher to NOT be fired if he/she was not meeting expectations as a teacher.

 

I've never heard of tenured teachers being fired, but there were several tenured teachers at a neighboring high school who never got hired back because they simply couldn't afford to keep them.

I don't think anyone is saying teachers can't be fired, but like one poster said they cannot be rehired. What I think, IMO, is that teachers are not losing their jobs to foreign competitors like many industries in America are.

I am in Manufacturing and here in Ohio and most of the USA has seen these jobs go to China or somewhere in Asia in the last 10 years.

 

People in my industry fear of losing our jobs to foreign countries. As a teacher you have the possibility of finding another school to go to. As for me, if more manufacturing jobs leave the country so do my chances of getting a job.

 

But for us to change this trend to be competitive in the Global market, we MUST teach and train our kids to be better in Math and Science. And if that takes having more or longer school days, I for one say "So be it" .

 

If it takes paying a little more in Taxes, I would welcome it, cause I will know my kids can have the chance to succeed in the Global Market.

Where does all this money come from? Schools already cutting corners wherever they can. He needs to worry about the 1.42 trillion dollar deficit btw which is the highest in U.S history
